Season 10

  • Really enjoying the season!

I started playing again after a long hiatus during the tail end of season 9.

Love the rowboats, and my friend group is stocked about having our own guild. Gives a sense of progression back to all of who are maxed out. We only have a handful of pirates, so our main goal is just reaching level 15, but we'll get there. Sorry to hear that some guilds are toxic. Leveling up the guild should be a fun thing to do at a natural pace!

I agree with the OP, this game was always special, but the sheer amount of content, QoL, and individuality for your pirate and ship now, this game just keeps becoming a better version of itself and I think that is very impressive.

So happy to be back on the seas!

it's an unbelievable experience. As a video game, as a live service game, as a shared experience, as a solo and crew experience.

I'm fortunate in that I play solo so I think about it all the time while playing. Freedom and opportunity are two of the greatest things to ever exist and this experience has a lot of both.

Ain't a thing like it on a computer/tv screen. It transcends technology and gaming imo. I love seeing new players enjoy experiences that are fresh and new to them, the talent and passion for arts and crafts around the community, I love seeing casual solos and crews just play to play without taking things serious.

  • To me what sticks out the most is how much long time feedback they have implemented since season 7. Agree or disagree with the changes, it can go either way, but to me it is undeniable that they value player feedback and try to turn that into fair quality of life for players.

I often have a "don't give them a tougher time than it needs to be" approach and opinion and this is a part of the reason as to why. Even if and especially in disagreement I find optimism about the game knowing that they try in substantive ways to improve and to improve the experience for most.

I don't have a strong opinion on the sail changes or quick swap. I'm glad that the basis for their efforts is how they view fairness in the environment. That's a strong foundation for the effort. Indifferent on hit marker stuff.

Pop up plunder thing is great, don't like that the box of secrets gets cheesed out (dunno if it's a part of this one), hopefully it evolves into something that doesn't reduce significance of the last couple of things that are still rare.

  • The loooooong amount of time we spent without meaningful updates led me to take a large hiatus. I would basically just log on to play Adventures.

Now we have better combat, tons of QoL, and plenty of things to look forward to. It feels like there's something going on in the game every other week! So, despite having one of the most work-intensive seasons of my life, I'm still finding time to get on the game.

Rare is focusing on updates that show that they care about us, which has massively changed public perception of Rare. I've seen a much more positive community in these past few months.
For me personally, even just Season 10 has made the game so much more enjoyable. Swashbuckling is fun again, and skill-based to boot! Disconnection does not void your supplies! Hourglass has been fun! There's lots of fun, classic PvP at FotD! And Skull of Siren Song will bring back the chaotic, server-wide PvP that was present in Arena.

  • This is wildly promising and an excellently made hype video.

This will continue to give opportunity for those that want to fight while giving space to those that want to produce treasure and pve outside of hot spots.

Add this to the fotd activity and Hg and there is so much going on in healthy ways between pve and pvp.

Exciting time for the organic environment.

This piece of content as designed and advertised is all win imo.

  • I really like the recycled rowboats from arena, was worth the wait x)

  • Very much looking forward to the The Skull of Siren Song. Hoping the lowered ship/player count in servers doesn't hinder what should be an amazing addition to the game. I'm really hoping this has the same impact that FotD did when it first came out, and doesn't turn out to be like Reaper's Chests: an interesting color beacon on the horizon that is completely ignored.

Having a rowboat stay attached to your boat between sessions has been a welcome addition, but me and my crew still look for another rowboat as we're planning our next heist. You can never have too many šŸ˜‚

I'm surprised at how much I've enjoyed having 2 stoves. Purchasing uncooked meat doesn't feel like a waste of gold now.

For pvp I think it'll be enough random adventure to be more appealing than HG and not so pve grindy that it'll be more appealing than a veil or some other "bait while getting something done" type of pvp

I think it's the best time to be implemented. Sometimes we get solid content that isn't necessarily implemented at the best time for the content in the environment.

Post season 8 there are a lot more skilled crews and there are more skilled crews doing random things, there is quite a hunger for this content to work out so I think there will be some healthy activity with it.

Imo it's looking like the best piece of content in years for adventure pvp and higher risk adventure pve. Right design and right time.

My personal opinion is that if all works out it'll be the best "fight for loot" content since fleets. I've done fleets nonstop for years because it's always been the most consistent content for real fights over loot with a lot of chaos. I think this has potential to maintain that kind of longevity.

  • This is a pretty big win update for SoT

The voyage is a big ole dub for the environment, the update itself seems to have been implemented without major issues. As far as the organic experience goes it's better than ever. So much opportunity for all styles.

Adding new cosmetics to do the monkey island tall tales again is awesome. Adding the chef costume (at popular request) is HUGE

Players can once again begin Lost Shipments Voyages in The Devil’s Roar and progress the Get Wrecked achievement.

    big ole dub

When a Captain’s ship leaves the session, the Captain’s Logbook left behind will continue to be readable by other crews.

    HUGE

Lots of improvements/fixes and feedback being implemented.

Awesome time for season 10 imo.

I like the new Angry Scribe emote. It is perfect for expressing how I feel when I have to do my taxes with the merchants. Also the touch grass emote no longer has those particles after using other emote. And it seems the guild recruit emote is working once again.

  • Being able to PacMan stuff with the collector's chest is my new all-time favorite thing.

I love that it makes a NOM motion when you grab something, and it's just such a time saver when you've got lots of skulls, trinkets and jewels/gems laying around. Moving back and forth from the nice tiny piles after you harpoon them at the Sovereigns to sell three at a time makes a fast selling experience even faster now.

  • I've done a few of the voyages now.

I think it's genuinely the best design for experienced players that they have done yet.

What is beautiful about this content (as a long term player) is that you can feel the lessons of the past in the voyage.

Years of trying things and now implementing what works into something that is simple in design but still improves all these different parts of risk/reward, qol, player experience, etc etc

It can be a chill delivery on some servers, it will be massive battles on others, there will be sneak players and random chaos. It's not ultra time consuming. It doesn't have unpleasant parts as "difficulty".

This game takes a lot of heat on the experienced side of things but I'd never want the game to go back to what it was before. The adventure experience and opportunity during organic play in this game has improved so much in the last year that it's best case scenario of what I always hoped to see for the design of the game.

This experience is so much more rewarding for adventure focused play than it was years ago, then it was 2 years ago.

The improvements made to the environment are setting up new players for years of high quality adventure experiences while continuing to offer significant opportunity for experienced play.

More skilled and competitive fights, healthier pvp, healthier risk/reward, major qol for the sessions.

Well done to all that work on this game and experience.

  • I feel they have improved significantly with communication, discussing the metas more, their views on tactics/exploits.

As far as combat changes go I'll adapt to whatever, I just would like it to be somewhat consistent and I definitely think they are more consistent in their approach these days.

Even though people will not agree on changes/stances I think it builds confidence in the environment for many and also builds confidence in some maintenance for some form of fairness in combat.

Things are lookin' good overall, imo.

  • @wolfmanbush

Incredibly transparent and straightforward about the fixes and intentions. Hope to see more of this in the future.

Rare stands far ahead of other AAA game developers, now, in making a game-as-a-service.

While I still see good patch notes from Respawn (Apex) that clearly looks at numbers and figures when discussing their balances, I struggle to think of any other developer that consistently delivers new content to games at this scale, and frequency, after 5 years.

I was thinking about that as I was re-doing the monkey island tall tales last week. Obviously not everyone's kind of thing but I just kept thinking about how much work goes into content like that, 5 years in...for free. It's wild whether it's for someone or not.

I feel quite fortunate to have been around to see what this experience has become. I've grown to appreciate it more and more over the last year.

  • The fish as a pop up plunder prize was a nice touch

Really like how that was designed and implemented.

Been seeing quite a bit of guild activity (marked flags) as people are leveling up their guilds. Quite a bit of FotD activity, siren song activity.

These events just tend to have less issues than they used to, can really see the improvement over the years.

    Lovely community weekend imo.

I like the festival merch design too, it looks nice imo

19 Pirates squashed by volcanic rocks

I dunno if I got logged for this but I quite possibly could be one of these thanks to a fight with a skelly galleon a little too close to the fire.

  • It would be disrespectful to not point out how good the bonechiller set is.

I got a mix and match going. Bonechiller, Boreal Aurora, Frostbite with the festival of giving flag.

    The weapons are awesome.

    Very very cool.

The crest became my main. Love it.

  • @wolfmanbush

I got the basic ship set and the Bonechiller weapons. Very disappointed in the lack of bells on the flinty. Can't decide on the green or red rowie.
I might have to explore BoreChiller mix now that you mentioned it. Boreal was my Bonechiller shipset before..before..

Also love the Siren Skull disco lights. Totally worth getting sunk over lol.

  • I don't read social media much. To me it always kind of seems like having a thumb war with an old set mousetrap, even as a casual observer.

Once in a while I'll hear about something and go check it out if it interests me. Creative Director for SoT was replying (on twitter) to players of the game so read through most of it.

Humility, accountability, substantive information, morale-building communication, it was all present.

I wanted to share some things that I liked to see. There is a bunch more if people wanna go adventure around for it.

Play forever and never buy anything and you’re just as welcome.

I've long given them credit for this here but this is a beautiful line that I think has been supported with their consistency over the years and how they handle the emporium and paid cosmetics.

We didn’t drip feed. The team were maxed out and we couldn’t get all done in time. After release we had time… what do we actually ā€˜get’ by you replaying them? Nothing. It’s come from a good place and there’s no angle here.

We can ā€˜scrape’ the data when the numbers are small soon after release, otherwise it’s a massive manual process and prone to error.

In reference to the new tall tale cosmetics.

    This is integrity in development.

I just figured they added it based on feedback and it would help boost activity (which is fine with me) but it was something different and I think it shows a genuine approach to serving the participants of the content.

Just wanted to add it to what I've liked about season 10.

It's not easy taking heat on social media, not easy to be in a space where social media is such a part of the product.

I appreciate the effort and communication in general that Rare and individuals from Rare have been offering in Season 10.
