Character Customization Sliders!

  • I like the idea of the carousel character creation system, but it's very limiting & random. I don't want to spend hours refreshing the pool, bored & wishing for a more efficient system. One of my favorite parts of an RPG is being able to create exactly (or very nearly) the look of the character I want to be in that game. It feels personal and adds tremendously to my immersion.

I propose that we have an optional slider-based customization system in which players can choose & adjust facial features & body types according to their vision of how their Pirate should look. That's really it. We don't have to replace the carousel, but it would really be nice to not have to wait for that 0.1% chance the Pirate looks like how you imagine they should.

  • Given that it's a game that mostly takes place in 1st person, I reckon you're being a tad too picky about it. I get it but that's the system they went with and ultimately it's not a huge deal.

Not that I wouldn't welcome the change and freedom of a slider-based system but that's probably a lot of work for something that a typical player would only deal with once.

There's so much to customize with clothing and vanity that the base character should hardly matter. Anything beyond the overall body shape can be dressed up to your liking regardless.

  • but it's very limiting & random.

Endless choices of endless created pirates. That is limited and yes very random. As it should

I don't want to spend hours refreshing the pool, bored & wishing for a more efficient system.

I love this argument and YET....its not the game but the Player who chooses to do this

a Pirate that you dont see unless you emote or Main menu

cant wait for every pirate to look the same or like there favorite streamer, or worse...look like one of the npc :P

  • I would expect more like a SWtOR slider than Elden Ring or Fallout 4.

I wouldn't be surprised for people to imitate other people if they had access to this feature, but they might roll for similar anyway already. But also, is that really that big of a deal? I barely pay attention to what other people look like.

  • Im all for it, the IPG is outdated and frustrating, as I've said before and will continue to say; "uniqueness" was lost with costumes and curses, things that cover 80% or more of your body and look identical to every other.

Refining it just a tiny bit would be beneficial to everyone, whether it's gender, skin tone, weight, or even just ironing out annoying little bits like a missing tooth or unremovable default makeups that can make or break an otherwise favourite pirate.
Also on the topic of missing teeth and whatnot: Rare really REALLY REALLY need to redesign their "previews" of pirates and ingame items alike. They are possibly the worst preview systems in any game I've ever seen.

Point is, small things like that aren't going to make every last player a pace22 clone, get a grip.

And I love this argument because it entirely misses the point that it actually IS the game's fault for incentivising the player to do that. You are given ONE CHANCE to choose your pirate. One chance unless you want to shell out some cash, or miss the next Plunder Pass, or wait until you're blessed by RANDOM LUCK to get an ancient skeleton and double pray that you'll even get enough for a potion.

You are incentivized to spend extreme amounts of time gambling to find a semi-decent character, or simply ""make do"" with some sub-par thing that you don't actually want, because you just wanted to play the game first. (Then after you play the game you realise everything is cosmetic driven, so that means your pirates looks are important if you take part in the main and only motivator in the game aside from "do it cause you can".)

  • The creators of this game want our pirates to be a little janky, so they don’t like the idea of being able to fully customize our characters or we end up with a bunch of stereotypically pretty pirates.

I do think the IPG could benefit from a body type filter though. Do you want a bandaged chest or not. The bandage gets in the way of a lot of clothing, scars, and tattoos. I’d love to remove the bandaged characters when going for a pirate who can make full use of the entire range of cosmetics.

I don’t want a male/female filter though as I want my character to be stereotypically female features, just minus the bandage.

Could also maybe benefit from an age filter of sorts as the game does also differentiate between old and young via the way hair and hair dyes behave. So it could be useful to be able to toggle on/off age as it impacts cosmetic useage as well.

My point is, in a game where the entire progression system is cosmetic, we should have a bit of an easier time navigating and picking the pirate who will wear those cosmetics. Making sure we can avoid the ones that impact usage of said cosmetics, if we want to make full use of them. While still honoring the vision the creators have for the game.

  • I got extremely lucky in the IPG, finding my perfect pirate in like 10 minutes. Though I hate the system, you have a vision of what you want, and yet you have to sit there and roll the slot machine of pirate until you become lucky. At least giving us some basic sliders that will narrow down the selection like gender, wonkiness and ethnicity would be great

  • The day they add this is the day I use a potion. I almost got one today but there's just one small thing so I don't wanna risk it all.
