Thoughts on incentivizing burying your loot

  • Wish there was more reason to do this.

    One thought that comes to mind is to have the value of the treasure go up the longer it's buried and available on the quest board.

    Like for example, a buried villainous skull would get buried, become an unique treasure item and gain a (100 x Days) gold bonus to its base value for each in-game day that passes.

    If that was the kinda thing we could expect on the quest board rather than the randomly generated ones I'd personally feel more inclined to go for them...or at least try keep track of them.

    That's just my one idea though, what do ye got?

  • The problem with trying to make burying more "valuable" is that the game is based around bringing treasure back. If it's more valuable to hide treasure, it's kind of going against the grain of the entire main game loop.

  • @d3adst1ck Just saying it's a feature in the game that doesn't get used as it was probably intended.

  • @b4njax Yeah, the quest board isn't used because it's antithetical to the main game loop. I don't think there is a good way to fix that without conflicting with something else, and it was just a bad idea that can probably be removed.

    Burying treasure works as designed and can be used to temporarily hide treasure from other players. I don't think much more needs to be done with it to be honest.

  • Is buried loot avialbe cross servers? If not this is the only way. Meybe just arund the stamp to avoid situation where you can't put shovel into ground without unbruing something.

  • It's very useful as is to hide things you might be in danger of losing but agree that people don't seem to pick up quests there much, despite people posting them. I once tried a session just doing board quests and it was kind of a grab bag - fun for being a bit outside of the norm but not especially rewarding in the end.

    I myself once buried both a Reaper's Chest AND a Reaper's Bounty Chest next to each other on Crooked Masts during a crazy session with multiple Reapers appearing on the map after I picked them up (I was not one and just could not get to the hide out to turn in safely - never an opening). I buried intending to come back later for them myself but eventually ran out of play time.

    Thankfully they did get dug up and found (I learned at the top of my next session) but only because I told someone attacking me randomly at the end of my available time to play that they would be much better off checking the board for the Crooked Masts map lol (with no more info than that). Almost every other time I've buried stuff I don't think was ever dug up. Incentivizing both sides of the equation a bit more would seem a good idea.

  • Now that they fixed floating loot and it actually sinks now why not generate quest board maps based on sunken loot to make them much more interesting than the current non-player made maps.

    I let a veil voyage sink the other day because my ship sunk just after I managed to sink a duo sloop. That chest of legends and other treasure could be on a quest board map after a small delay of time.

  • @b4njax not a bad idea but I'd think you'd want to encourage quicker digs rather than leaving them as bigger risk of them being lost when servers restart after 48 hours or whatever their cycle is.

  • Burying your loot is not what needs to be incentivized.

    It's posting things to the Quest Board that arguably needs to some attention. Surely it gets way less than 2% of player engagement these days 😜

    I want to make that distinction because burying loot has absolutely proven to be a very fun mechanic for PvP related scenarios.

    The Quest Board, conversely, is a dust collector. The only reason people post to is is for commendations. Anything else is little more than charity work.

  • If you want to make the quest board more interesting, you should make it so people can post any quest (that isn't part of a voyage) on that board.

    I think more people would use the map board if they knew you could also get quests for the breath of the sea, wood crates, cannonball crates, etc. Those are the quest people are often looking for.

    If people that aren't looking to do those are able to post those quests, the quest board would already be more interesting.

    I don't need breath of the seas anymore, so i ignore the coral bottles. But if i knew that i could post them on the board, i would pick them up and post them. I think that would be a good addition.

    Burying your loot is not what needs to be incentivized.
    It's posting things to the Quest Board that arguably needs to some attention. Surely it gets way less than 2% of player engagement these days

    I was kinda implying it for the sake of quest board to be fair. You are right though. I'd say it's helpful to incentivize one to aid in incentivizing the other.

  • Imo quest board could potentially be fixed with few minor tweaks.

    1. Display the buried treasure value.
    2. The player who buried it , receives a cut if that loot gets dug up and sold (regardless if the player is online or not).

    This means that people who choose to actively do them would know exactly the value of what they are signing up for, like literally everything else you do in game ( so would only make sense )

    If someone chooses to bury a very valuable but unsellable item - the icon of that item could be displayed on that map (FoF/FotD key as an example)

    Also a player who chooses to burry it, would have a good incentive of burying it.

    To avoid exploits, burying could be limited to XX pieces of loot and how many maps one can do per day. I'm sure someone here will start loosing sleep here, because alliance servers potentially will somehow exploit this :D

  • @zig-zag-ltu Two good points i think. Just 1 addition to your point 1, if it's a Breath of the Sea or Wood/Cannonball/Food Crate of Gunpowder quest, it should just say those quests on the display and not a value.

    I would say give people who posted the map 30% of the loots value (the same amount as people on Safer Seas would get), since posting a map is safer then actually trying to sell the loot, so the same amount (30%) seems fair then.

    I'm not sure if we should give a limit to the amount of maps, since they would always get less gold then they would get from posting a map, so it's not realy an exploit if it's already losing you money compared to handing it in yourself.

    By the way: there are already limits on the amount of dig spots per map ;-)

  • Be the change you want to see on the quest boards lol.

    I usually just bury stuff I'm not interested in for whatever emissary I'm doing. I will rarely go empty a shrine and bury it all for lulz. Smiley maps!!

    I would like more feedback that a map was dug. (Or lost to the shroud.) I'm very on the fence about boosting it.

  • I often give the Quest Board a poke when I'm setting off from the outpost and pick some up if they're for islands where I'm going or close to.
    I quite often bury treasures and post the maps myself too, in the hope that maybe I can give a nice surprise and boost to another crew.
    Must admit, I think I've only ever taken one or two that were actually created by another crew, rather than the game generated ones.

    Not sure what would persuade more pirates to consistently do this more often though, short of the something being counted towards a monthly/seasonal score like the ledgers.

    This won't fix the board because 1. is going to be very low. If players want gold from loot that gets dug up they are going to get way more by just turning it in themselves, and even better if they have an emissary active, so the only things that end up on the board is loot that is too low value to bother taking back to an outpost. That's why there is only junk on the quest boards - it is and should always be better to bring it in yourself.

    Well you can't right now, and I don't think you should be able to, bury those items for a number of reasons.

  • Less to do with burying loot and more so with the board itself
    I think they should put all the main faction quests on the notice board like how they have done with captain voyages with the shipwright, then all the faction NPCs would just be where you go to turn in loot or purchase the faction title/cosmetic upgrades. This way you can pick up voyages at sea posts too instead of going back to an outpost.

    There should also be radiant quests to encourage crews to go back to places like Treasuries and Sea Forts to rescue and return NPC's or certain items belonging to NPCs for doubloon rewards

    There are many reasons but they are situational. Let's say I am headed somewhere on a mission and along the way I pick up a Reapers chest. If I carry it around my mission I was doing will likely get interrupted. But if I bury it and pick it up after my mission is done I reduce the risk for my mission.

  • I tend to bury anything I find while isle hopping for supplies (with ship still sailing) remembering to post to board though is another thing

  • I would like to see maps stay on your ship if you sink. The only way to get another ship's maps should be if you board them and steal them.

    That way burying your loot protects it a little bit but also puts it up for grabs if you get outplayed. This would be useful when the naval is kind of a draw and someone just did an event or something.

    I think quest board would get a lot more attention if there was some visible indication of it having a player-map on the board.

    The other day I did every sea fort and buried all the chests on Devil's Ridge, then posted it and chilled at Q22 for a couple hours. Nobody ended up getting it.
