Tall Tale Captains of the Damned softlock?

After getting the cell key to get the "Key to Freedom" commendation, i used the key to open both the cell door for the commendation and the door below the room where you get the key. Now I have no key and even waited for it to be considered lost, yet it didn't respawn and i couldn't continue. Is there any other way or are you just not allowed to open the one door below the room with the key?
