Allow Gifts to be given to Athena/bilge rats

  • From an RP perspective my character hates the Reaper ans as such I generally avoid it unless my crew want to boost their level in it by selling to them, but why is something called gift only allowed to be handed into the Reapers faction?
This makes little sense to me as the reapers are a predominately aggressive faction, I'm not saying reapers shouldn't be allowed to sell the gifts to the servant but if someone is nice enough to gift one to me I don't want to give it to the servant, nor do I really want to leave it for someone else to encourage Reaper activity. As such I usually end up just throwing it over board and it's a real shame.

I'm fine with missing out on the commendations though the completionist in me does scream a little bit.

  • It might would help to know the lore of the gifts if specific to Reaper and the rest of the sea didn’t find value in them. That’s why reaper will pay you and the others won’t. But I think it could be good lore to add it where we can sell it to Larinna or the Sovereigns to deny the Reapers what they value. The way selling cargo deliveries to reaper is valuable to them to deny it to the merchants.

  • @abjectarity according to the fandom wiki the Reapers do find value in them, but if this is the case then surely the bilge rats/athena would reward players for preventing the Reapers from acquiring these items too.

Same goes for the emissary flags imo, it's nice you can sell your own flag if you sink (granted for 1 gold but that's to prevent exploiting) but if I find another crews emissary flag I ought to be able to return it to the appropriate faction as a "here, the Reapers won't get this flag" kind of interaction, I wouldn't expect much of a gold reward from this either but in a sandbox game it should be an option

  • Yeah that was my point. Reaper finds value in them and maybe we could sell to someone else to deny them their value. I think the Sovereigns would be perfect because lore wise they hate the Reapers. Larinna would also be good for the bilge rats and the fact she already accepts doubloon items.

  • @abjectarity if Rare were to allow this I would say bilge rats as they are the ones who have the "mercenary voyages" related commendations but if they didn't allow you to achieve the relevant commendations for selling these items elsewhere, the Sovereigns would also work, though would you still need to be on a captained ship to turn it in there is my question with that.

  • Ehhhh...
Maybe Seaposts...maaaaybe the Mysterious Stranger Lady. But not Sov's or Larinna.

I realize this would help me because I'm in the "get people to turn these in" stage but some things should remain a bit of a pain in the aft.

  • I’d love to see Seaposts have a better use. I want them to host the black market and yeah maybe they could take some of the older relics like gifts. They do have their bone crates they give us doubloons for.

    Rag & Bone or Bonedust?

  • @pithyrumble I just figured bilge rats since they are/were the main distribution of dubloons

Oh same here, I actually made a post long time ago about turning the sea post traders in black market vendors but a few people disliked it because I speculated they could have the tiniest of chances to sell old cosmetics no longer available, that aside they really need more to flesh them out as well as the Cargo Merchants, looking through my old posts you'll find quite few relating to Grogsoaked Ed. Actually involved him in my most recent tall tale idea as well lol.

  • @pugwash9586 "but why is something called gift only allowed to be handed into the Reapers faction?"

    Because the gift was stolen.

Look, if Bonechiller wanted Tiny Tim to get his gift he shouldn't have buried it and given the map to a skelly. Should have at least given it to Scrooge...

    Ragged bone dust crate 🤣

  • @foambreaker but we can steal anything and sell it to the appropriate factions if we don't want to be reaper players, why should the gifts be any different?

  • I'm not sure about changing where you sell them but it is definitely strange that the commendations are listed as bilge rats rather than reapers, same with reaper chest and bounty.

  • @hiradc I feel there are a few things like this which Rare overlooked like the faction cosmetics being sold by both faction representatives and the outpost vendors

  • Once upon a time, you turned them in to the bilge rats. So the lore has already changed once.

  • Well for commendations they should still be brought to reapers, but others should accept it for doubloons too.

  • I would just like it if you can burry them, post the map on the board and if someone digs it up and gives it to the reapers, it still counts as a gifted one.

  • @super87ghost FR. Whoever thought that one up hasn't met the playerbase of reapers.
I've tried twice to gift the gift and each time they just accepted it and didn't sell.

They don't have to be reapers - they just have to turn them in there.

  • I think this is a decent idea also think reapers should be able to turn them.in from the skeleton on the outposts like the flags

  • @hiradc the were originally bilge rat adventures and they should either still take them or let us use the skeleton at the outposts in hopes more people turn them in

  • @lem0n-curry .......... Wow. I can be really dumb sometimes.

  • @crowedhunter In you're defense: if they hand it in without a reaper emissary flag, they are just reapers in disguise ;-)

so i was doing the buried treasure maps earlier today and actually got a humble gift, i was able to hand it into the reapers (much to my chagrin,my pirate doesnt like the reapers) No idea if whoever buried it got the progress for it tho.

  • @pugwash9586 No, you have to 'give' it (stolen counts) to someone else and that crew has to hand it in while you're on the server, otherwise it won't count
