Optional Map Settings

  • Optional setting to remove the following from the map;

    • Player ship

    • Allied Ship

    • Reaper Ship

    • Reaper chest

    I've been playing since day 1 and always look for ways to give myself more of a challenge, I know my way around most of the map, even after a long hiatus, but the smaller islands still turn me around sometimes. My main issue is that I am always able to see the listed above on the map when I would prefer a plain map of just the islands. I know most players wouldn't use it but too often do I rely on the map to look at which direction a reaper ship is sailing which takes out the suspense and surprise of being rolled up on by a well crewed reaper ship. Beyond that, I am not a reaper player and as such have no interest in the reaper chest, I can still see the beacon it makes in the distance which is enough for me.

    I just want to be able to use the map without being handed to me on a silver platter by seeing things cluttering the map

  • There’s a simple fix to this that doesn’t require any changes to be made to the game.

    Don’t use your in game map and instead use one of the many websites, apps, or print out a physical copy of the world map. I can provide links or names of the apps for your mobile devices if you need help.

    You have missed the point I'm trying to make... I'm well aware of all the apps and stuff but I do not want to keep tabbing out of the game or looking at my phone, the entire point I'm trying to get across here is that those apps and being able to see this stuff on the map feels like cheating to me.

    When doing a voyage I want to be able to go "okay I need to go Cutlass Cay, I know I'm currently at Fort Merrick, this means I need to keep heading South west until I reach Plunder Outpost, from there I head west" in doing that I am literally planning my course out for the voyage ahead, right now with the ability to see exactly where my ship is all I need to do is check it every couple minutes to make sure the front of my ship is pointing in that direction..

    Another utility that feels like I'm cheating is with the 3 different kinds of reapers now available. Let's say I have docked in thieves haven and on my map I see a reapers is coming towards me, right now all I have to do is look at the direction they're taking and go;
    "okay the reaper is about to enter in through the western arch, that means I can take the North exit and loop around the island to where they cannot see me, from there I will get into the wind and sail away"
    When what I'm asking for is a way to remove the ability to see these ships for myself so that I am more incentivised to look on the horizon and have to guess which entrance they will take and which exit I should take, doing this creates tension, guess work and genuine decision making instead of being spoon fed all the answers.

    I'm not saying remove it for everyone, just make it an option in the setting menu for those of us who want more of a challenge but don't wish to sacrifice a big part of sailing which is using the map table. Of course a grade 5 reaper emissary should still be able to see the other emissaries on the server if they so wish, or like me, they could choose to do things the old fashion way.

  • Can't imagine many people would choose this. The no player/allies shouldn't actually be too hard for them to implement as there are freestanding maps in places like sea forts

    There are lots of accessibility features that not many people use but to have the option is still good

  • I see these types of posts often but why should Rare have to add options that restrict people from doing something when they could simply just stop doing it themselves? Don’t like what’s on the map or it’s not enough of a challenge? Don’t use the map. Get lost? Look at the map…

  • @pugwash9586 there's a difference between making the game more accessible to people with disability/impairments and adding features that are very niche. This adds no real benefit but is a personal preference.
    As I said I don't actually mind it, as long as it doesn't require any significant resource to add.

    I'm not asking for it to be a default setting.. just an optional one like how we can remove the HUD and island banners. We can already choose to remove the Tall Tale locations,

    As I said I don't actually mind it, as long as it doesn't require any significant resource to add.

    By default the map has no player/allied/reaper ships, those things are added on top after you join a server so a simple option to disable seeing them for players that want added challenge/realism would be more than do-able

  • Think about it this way. While it’s a cool idea for a small group of people, it still takes work to code it into the game. It’s not a switch that exists already that they can just make visible and you can use.

    And taking the time to do this takes up time they could have been coding something else into the game. Something that many people would use, instead of a small group.

    So while it’s a fun idea, it’s something that few people would use but still take up work hours that they could have used to make or fix something many people would use.

    Everything requires coding, each new season takes up work hours instead of fixing something already in the game.

    Missing the entire point of this post

    I’m really not. You’re asking for something that isn’t necessary because you want a challenge, when the solution is sitting right in front of you already.

    There are plenty of things much harder to code that are unnecessary yet made it into the game, a simple settings option isn't reinventing the helm (wheel). As it is I already rarely use the map as I know where most islands are however those of us that like a bit of realism and challenge but still want to use the map for things like charting courses shouldn't have to resort to third party apps which don't have the reapers ships exactly locations.
    Personally I always thought the map shouldn't show a reaper ships exactly position but instead make the general area they are in redder than the rest but that would be unforgiving to new players, my idea is simply a compromise without having to sacrifice features of the game.

  • my idea is simply a compromise without having to sacrifice features of the game.

    No compromise is needed. Map works perfectly as it is.
