PvE servers dead before they even started? Youre doing it wrong.

  • this is going to be a hot topic anyway but i think my points are valid

-70% rep and gold gains was 100% the correct idea to add more risk vs reward to adventure mode. however i think you should also boost adventure mode values more because some stuff as it is isnt even worth picking up IE all the items valued at 200g or less

having half the games content and especially captaincy locked out of of the pve mode now literally makes this new pve mode you are adding totally useless for 99% of the player base.

just like you not supporting arena and then it dying
just like you not supporting hourglass and it dying
just like private servers that only streamers had access to and had no progression at all

why waste development resources on modes you are going to kill with bad decisions?

right now as it stands the way you are setting up "safer seas" is already punishing enough for the safer play space with such lower values on everything. not being able to get harassed when doing tall tales will be great. however i will NEVER do another tall tail if i cant gain progress on the milestones. and as captaincy isnt available on safer sea i cant progress.

also with loot being worth so much less not being able to sell everything at sovereigns is again super punishing because it will bring people back to selling items taking 40+ minutes for a solo player vs sovereigns allow us to do it all in 5 or so minutes

not allowing captaincy basically goes against everything you have been trying to do with making the game more accessible for people who have less time to play. so unless sailing speed is going to be increase by 4x or you are going to allow people to walk up to npcs and sell all loot on their ship for X trade company with 1 press of a button I really dont see what you were thinking with compounding so many negatives in a mode that has been HIGHLY requested for 5 years.

    GOOD!

The idea is to give swabbies a "noob zone" to learn how to play the game before playing in High Seas. Let them get their sea legs sinking emergent skeleton ships before seeing another player. This is a good thing, I've got so many friends that want to play but are intimidated by the PvP and no real way to learn the game. This is a great thing, I can teach them to play in Safer Seas and build their confidence and get them to play High Seas in the future.

  • As was stated in the video by Mike, this is a much better space for people to learn the Seas and get prepared for the experiences that are ahead in what is now considered "Normal".

Safer Seas will exist as an expanded Maiden Voyage that you can interact and sail with your friends in; focusing on the stories of Tall Tales, and the world Rare have made. If you're a professional pirate, you're not prevented from doing what you have been all along. And this content will be used to introduce or "re"-introduce many would-be pirates.

I would also assume this to make the seas potentially even more bombastic; as all the fishermen will instead take server-space and resources to Safer Seas. No use wasting it on High Seas to lose your hard earned fishies. Little children and screaming teens will reside more often in Safer Seas, meaning fewer AFK kiddies when your galleon comes under attack. AND Family game night isn't filled with baddies who swear as sailors or seek to fulfill a bloodlust that would make a vampire blush...

This is the best path forward, and I think they've made it work well with the restrictions placed.
Personally, my opinion is that 10% of gold and reputation should be earned here, pushing players out toward high seas sooner, because a safe passage to level 40 equates to the better voyages becoming available and that sweet-sweet OOS sail-line is S-tier. . . not something I want noobies to get for little toe-dips.
But I digress, Rare have made some significant efforts in digging into the issue and I appreciate it.

Hmm maybe they dont want people to flock to these safer seas, each crew will take up about the same server resources that can normally hold 6 crews.

That means these servers are 6 times more expensive to run per player then the regular ones are.

They are not meant as a grindfest, they are meant as a way to learn how to play the real game

You can understand their caution on what to "allow" in the Safer Seas option but I had the same reaction on Captaincy being locked out as well? What harm is there in having your own ship and its customization in this setting? Is it all about eliminating the ease of Sovereign turn ins and applying even just a little more friction to the 30% level of gold? Maybe? I can't think of any other reason out of the gate. I presume you can still decorate your generic ship in this mode at least? Kind of pain to have to do it each session though?

Know some are going to be up in arms about this but I commend Rare for adding this mode. It's something a sizable portion of players have wanted and been begging for, for a long time, despite the protests that will inevitably rain down. It's telling that the sweatiest version imaginable for a treasure hunt and turn in was also previewed but it's not being celebrated as much as this is reflexively being complained about?

The best takeaways from my POV:

Liked the nod to this being a really good mode for content creation. Eager to see what people can come up with, with basically free form virtual sets and environs.

A better "on ramp" was definitely needed. Alot of the game's systems and mechanics take real time and experience to learn and puzzle out. Some long time players have seemingly lost touch with the frustration of trying to learn and enjoy the basics without infinitely more experienced players slamming the door in your face.

A better opportunity for introducing or enjoying the game (especially with kids) was also sorely needed. It's not very hard to find videos of grown men making kids cry and having a hearty laugh about it. There are indeed people out there that would love to play SoT with their kids, share it with non-gamers or have family/friend sessions without the risk of swearing, abusive-feeling middle schooler antics or dispiriting fail states that make people not even want to play ever again. Some will be perfectly content to play solo in Safer Seas but it's reasonable to see it as a gateway to High Seas as well, which it certainly can be for many too.

I've no idea why people aching for PVP need to have opponents that want no part of it, other than enjoying the feeling of shooting fish in a barrel. For those that would rather avoid it it's primarily because of toxic behavior + language that comes alongside it and also KNOWING that the chances of prevailing or surviving are basically nil. When you know you are going to lose due to lack of ability or unwanted anxiety it's not just not fun, it's "I'll have to do something else" not fun. Give people a chance to learn how to move, how to puzzle out the games mechanics, how the environments work, master their ships, etc.. From there they very well may choose to dive into PVP environs. Why is this hard to understand?

The devs certainly must know the community reaction coming but it would serve everyone well to remember that this game is 6 years old and counting. It either evolves and continues to keep and acquire players or becomes a museum for people that have thousands of hours in and somehow still feel shortchanged.

  • @merlin-mav-k

Mmhmm... And what happens to soulless players who shoot first and sink on sight? They get bored eventually. And that's how games truly die off. No new players. Not retaining old players. The saltiest taste when mentioning the title.

At some point, your sweatlord needs to take a shower and really engage with someone socially or offer a little kindness. An anecdote for ye:
I tucked on an OOS boat. They came under attack. I helped save their ship, then helped them get to level 5, offered them 200k in alliance loot, and got their level 5 flag as they logged out. Both of us were happy. ;) And we had a story to share.

    Be more pirate.

  • Be more pirate.

This update is giving more people a chance to, and also giving another mode to people so inclined. Not sure how other people choose to play harms anything or diminishes what you are describing in the slightest. The core game is still there too, with new additions.

  • I bet there still ways to troll and be toxic in the safer sea area. Just wait.
