What's the One Thing You Wish You Knew Before Starting to Play Sea of Thieves?

  • I feel like everyone has at least 1 thing they wish they knew before starting a game. And I'm curious. What is the 1 thing you wish you knew before starting Sea of Thieves? Me, I wish that I had known that since my account is a child account, that my mic wouldn't work and I couldn't here players talking unless I had a parent account change the settings on my account to give me permission to use my mic and to hear other playera. Luckily I had another email that I could make into a parent Microsoft account, and oh boy did having my mic working and being able to hear players change my experience with Sea of Thieves.

  • What is the 1 thing you wish you knew before starting Sea of Thieves?

D1, how to angle my sails and catch the wind. Spent the first two weeks, with sails always facing forward...

  • Importance of PVP. I would have tried to translate my FPS game skills into Sea of Thieves at an early stage instead of trying to immerse myself into a 'Pirate's Life' and focus mainly on PVE.

Don't get me wrong, nothing wrong with it, but no child/person ever dreamed about the pirate who got killed 15minutes into the movie, we all want to be epic 'heroes' with massive loot hauls , sailing on the 'baddest' ship on the seas. I guess I got overwhelmed by the exploration, sense of discovery, the awesome voyages wich were all new at the time etc (except merchants)

  • @zig-zag-ltu

I understand that desire for wishing you knew the importance of PvP. For a long time I didn't want to do PvP, but ever since one time I got betrayed at a Fort of Fortune, I've accepted PvP and I'm trying to improve my skills in it. Best thing to do to improve your PvP is to find what fighting style suits you the best, and for me that's close combat

  • I should have been more patient and considerate earlier on.

There are times where I should have been more consistent in conduct. Not ToS type stuff but just not implementing the patience and consideration that were necessary and deserved for the situation.

  • One thing I wish I knew was a simple one: Never. Drop. Your anchor. Drop it briefly, it is fine but never hard anchor anywhere. xD The number of times I have had ships roll up on me with my anchor down, I just wanted to drop sails and leave but I had to get it up then they'd board.. Yeah. Just a lesson learned there. Drop your anchor if only to stop completely, raise sails up, and re-raise anchor. Your loot, and sanity, will thank you.

  • The randomness of interactions largely misrepresented and in fact is a simple binary fight or flight.

It takes hundreds of hours to find anyone willing to actually interact and in 80% cases it's simply because they are noobs who weren't corrupted by the game yet.

That I was going to love it so much. I wish I got in earlier instead of stumbling in on the Open Beta (? or whichever one happened in January 2018). Before Sea of Thieves I was mostly into sci fi games and FPS multiplayer games. This game converted me to the pirate aesthetic and made me appreciate "tactile" interactions and lack of on-screen clutter for immersion - both of which the game has sadly moved away from a little bit.

  • I wish I knew more about PvP aspects of the game.
Similar to @ZiG-ZaG-LTU, when I first started the game, I focused solely on quests and PvE, but was quickly hauled into the world of PvP due to necessity. I've been able to get to a point where I can hold my own in a fair fight against most everyone who isn't a tryhard sweat, and I even enjoy the risk elements of hauling large loads of loot without selling. I just wish that I had been more aware that PvP would be such an integral part of the game even if you don't seek it out.

  • I just found out today, as a day one player, that you could offer food to pigs to get them to stop running when needing to catch them. Not that I will ever really need to do that again, but man that would have helped a lot back at the begging when going for PL. BTW I have not tested this, but heard it on a SoT podcast.

  • @devtryak How to turn on Xbox only.

  • @foambreaker

I used it a lot when I didn't use my mouse and keyboard to play.

  • @monstertem

I've learned that lesson the hard way. Now, for things like FoFs and forts and things like that, I drop my anchor, lift up sails all the way, harpoon anchor, and raise the anchor and I'm ready to go for emergency escapes into a fight.

  • @remakoro

I'm more on the friendly side of players, though I will betray and fight, so I'm one of the people who's willing to alliance, and don't try to trick me cuz I know signs of alliance betrayals. Also, there's Sea of Thieves podcasts?

  • @thr-wildwin7

Honestly, that's good to know about the pigs because I've just started a ship called The Food Sloop, where we sell food to players and our targeted demographic will be Reapers.

  • that Arena would not be there forever. And that its much smarter to go through the "pain" of getting better in PvP first before doing all the adventure / PvE stuff. Does not matter how good you are at stacking loot if you are not able to defend it. Lost a lot of loot in the early days. When I finally started the Arena this coin flipped really quickly and it switched from being afraid of ships on the horizon to being excited for the next contestant of my treasure.

  • @axecaliburtv

I've never done the arena because I joined in Season 8, and I kinda wish the arena was around because I'm improving my PvP to spite one of my friends and the arena would really help. I'm decent at PvP though I'm still perfecting my close combat fighting, and I think a combo for that would be sword and pistol so I can attack up close with a reliable sword and use the pistol for when they're just out of range.
