No. If people made that assumption, that’s on them. Nothing was ever promised by the devs.

I did find that part really funny cause it got my crew mate’s hopes up and I was convinced they were gonna do it 🤣

I have seen a lot of people complaining that the only reason they are doing the tale tale is to get the capstan and angry that it was a red hearing

I'd hardly call a couple of frames "heavily implied" tbh...
Kinda just their own issue tbh, it was a trailer for a reason, not anything concrete and exact of what was being added. The amount of cinematic trailers that get released and then a major issue with the game or update or whatever is that it doesn't look like the trailer. A pretty common trend
I think it's kinda funny that it's always the "crybaby gatekeepers" but yet they're not the ones sitting here making a post name calling and going on about why they're not allowed to get previously somewhat limited cosmetics, especially when they're not even permanently exclusive and unavailable like the capstan.

There have been a few Obsidian pieces in the last couple of moths in Twitch Drops.

There was a thread complaining about that.
If anything, they should put the entire set behind Emporium lol.

Ain't no way y'all expected the obsidian items, being put "on sale" by a fraudulent salesman, in the Sea of the Damned, was going to be freely available and placed in your inventory for the rest of your pirating career. Pirate's Life didn't even give us free Silver Blade cosmetics and instead put a cosmetic twist on it in relevancy to the tall tale in question.

The trailer heavily implied we would be able to by the obsidian stuff from Stan.

I think that is the booty of the joke. Stan has "used vessels" for sale and makes up some grand reason why you should buy them for over the top price.

That said, people did complain loudly here and there about obsidian stuff being for sale in the Tall Tale, based on the early trailer, so OP isn't totally wrong with that assumption.

I doubt Rare ever intended to sell them that way, but they should have remembered that some of their players tend to take everything at face value...

Those are the players we like to laugh about because they care about cosmetics like Obsidian items a little too seriously despite it consistently being a set designed to be a part of RNG giveaways and promotions, and would be rereleased at any time if given.

In defense of the OP, I know of at least one significantly influential streamer that made a video complaining about the fact that the capstan got taken away from partners and they got a sail instead. A sail with asthetics he personally doesn't like so he heavily implied it was junk.

His whole rant was based on the sea of thieves news video.. So it is a misconception that the OP could have, and was perpetuated by those with influence.

For the record, I don't think it was gatekeeping or crybabies. I don't think a change was made. I think this was always the plan, and fits in the lore of Stan being a swindler. I am not saying that I think this was changed at the last minute. I am only saying that a prominent streamer has used their influence to convince others that this happened.

This same influencer has been on an ant-SOT rant for a few months now. The season delays have hurt streamers, particularly those who hitched their wagons to SOT exclusively for their viewership and livelihood. And a few of those streamers have not been objective about the delays nor particularly willing to realize that their playstyle and approach to generate views is not at all the experience of normal players so their perceptions are particularly skewed.

It kinda makes me smile to see them so riled up. Some of the most notorious have, in my opinion, been a negative influence on the community for a very long time and this is finally a market correction for less-than-honest streamers that has been a long time coming.

@ictus-xxi yeah she’s misremembering how they were given out, but they were indeed given out over the last couple of months. 6 obsidian items in total. Hull, banjo, compass, fishing rod, sails, and eye of reach. Not twitch drops though, Game Pass perks for the summer.

As for the main topic of this post… I’ve never seen or heard anything about monkey island before these tall tales, so I never expected obsidian items and it was pretty obvious to me personally that it was a trick of a (trench coat) salesman.

dude, you came up with something for yourself and you don't like that the developers didn't fulfill your wish. Did you seriously believe that the developers would give out such a kind of rare set for the passage of a fairy tale? It's kind of stupid

I think everyone is overthinking this. It was a funny joke Rare included for those who knew how sought after the set was, and I found it halarious. Of course you were never going to get to buy the set from a scammer! In the end, it's just Rare pulling your leg. Have a laugh about it!

I am very lucky to have obtained capstan and almost all remaining items of the set and stuff over the last few years but it was a nightmare of a grind participating in so many giveaways I have long lost count.

When the trailers came out I was happy that Rare thought about all those poor souls being left out over the last years - especially since Capstan and Six Packs are no longer obtainable by SoT Partners.

I thought like "it was exclusive for the longest time, now its time for everyone to get access to the cleanest looking black ship set." But I know many others who were very upset. I don't get it.

Prestige over "rare" items.

If you managed to earn a "hard-to-earn" item, you could be considered talented, skilled, or something special to the community/developers.

Cosmetic rarity to some people is sacred because unfortunately, FOMO hits hard and stuff like this getting "rereleased" devalues the hard efforts others went through just to obtain it. If you got this item for playing a tall tale instead of trying your luck at endless forced Twitch viewer engagement giveaways, why would you even go through the effort of the latter if the easier method shows up and becomes common place?

I understand why people are like this, but being like this over the Obsidian items is just ridiculous, because these items have a history of showing up again through multiple methods of giveaways, promotions, perks, twitch drops, etc. While it's clearly a far shot that a licensed crossover tall tale would reward you a tough-to-earn giveaway item, the thought really shouldn't be upsetting people like this, at all.

Ya it's time for those cosmetics to be added to the game to counter all the online sellers scalping codes for hundreds of dollars. They've been exclusive long enough, especially the capstan since that was never available through a Twitch/Mixer drop. It's always been luck of the draw on top of needing the ability to tolerate sucking up to some pathetic streamer. I'd never stoop that low. And yes the devs did heavily imply you could earn or buy the Obsidian cosmetics in the Monkey Island tall tales in the trailer and in their dev stream so I agree with the OP. They need to make good on their marketing and make it so you can earn or gain the ability to buy the Obsidian cosmetics if you've completed the monkey island tall tales once the third one drops. Otherwise a lot of people will be pretty peeved, which is not something this game needs in its current state.

@merlin-mav-k some of it. There’s like an entire cosmetic set of the obsidian items that have been given out a variety of ways over the years. The chips ahoy code was for the shovel, compass, tankard and bucket… I believe.
