Enemy spawn rate after today update

  • I don’t know how many of you experienced this, but after today update the enemy spawn rate on islands is… simply brutal.

Crawlers, phantoms, skeletons and even sharks in shallow waters spawn in endless waves and great numbers.

3600 hours in the game, this is not normal, not in the slightest. Never seen something like this. Simply carrying loot out of a crypt tonight was pure hell.

    Hotfix surely needed.

  • Not actually a new problem, we were just discussing it earlier this week https://www.seaofthieves.com/community/forums/topic/161167/do-developers-play-this-game-themselves-mob-spawn-rate-especially-during-tall-tales/

Though I haven’t played today, I can’t imagine it being worse than it has already been. Hope it isn’t. Though it needed to be fixed either way.

  • No idea if it's true that rates have changed at all but I'm currently in the Roar doing Cargo runs and the last 3 islands I've stepped off my ship to pick up cargo at, I was maybe off the boat for 45 seconds since its the Roar (gotta be quick) and I spawned 4 groups of enemies each time. I noticed it felt weird so I thought I'd post my experience.

Update: New record is 4 Skeleton groups, 2 Ocean Crawler Groups and 4 Phantom Groups in under 1 minute on Devils Ridge dropping off cargo.

  • this is not normal, not in the slightest

It’s the Sea of Thieves. What part of this place is normal?

Frankly. I like it, makes the islands alive more. And I’m tired of players complaints about it. No challenge

  • I had to look and see if anyone has posted about this. We are playing and once we kill one wave, immediately another wave comes. It doesn't stop. So we are taking forever with just two of us to get through what we are doing. It makes the game no fun. Idk who splashed up the rate of enemies but it is already old.

  • Just came here to see if anyone else noticed this too. We ended our session in a fun way tonight, sunk our ship, and then I black screened to it. I had to have my crew see this. Phantoms we're fighting skeletons, and the moment I stepped on the island, 2 merfolk spawned, and everyone was on me. After I killed the lot, 5 phantoms came at me right after. I couldn't keep up with the spawn rate and had to keep going back to the ship to reload. Crazy.

  • Instant sharks, all night.
Literally anytime you hit the water - bam, sharks.

A bit limiting when ur tryingm to swim sneaky like....

  • @burnbacon Nothing wrong with an increase but the rate it's at is unreal! Skeletons, Phantoms, and Ocean Crawlers all spawning at the same time should not happen.

  • @fox-gr Just experienced this. Finished the first quest of the day, infinite enemy spawns once we started trying to move the loot. Legit nonstop waves. We said f that and are gonna play something else

  • Returning player after five years, I'm glad to see this is a bug or adjustment after the patch.
I was pushing for pirate legend as I didn't finish the grind back then and just had gold hoarders left, leaving it till last cause I thought I would enjoy it most.
I was flabbergasted walking away from a large island with much more siren gems than chests after fighting ten times the enemies the Order of Souls voyages pit me against.. only out done by the merciful volcano letting me stay in the island so long.
I did wonder before seeing a few of these threads. "Is this what Gold Hoarder voyages are now?"
It's a lot to manage for one person. We're talking a mad dash on islands you're familiar with racing against unyeilding spawns but I think this increased rate could work if the enemy spawns weren't always on top of you but somewhere on a large island including where you currently are, maybe we could still keep these tough fights on the small islands as the extra challenge there doesn't feel too much with how quickly you can find dig spots even under pressure.
Noticed the extra sharks, they haven't felt overwhelming to me just more food for the stove.

  • @fox-gr
ye bro this is crazy, should be fixed i hope ...

  • I have been having this same issue, honestly glad others are reporting it… I for real had to stop and process if I had done something or changed something that would force spawn enemies because they just will NOT stop spawning! Wave after wave after wave! At one point I had 8 Skellie’s, 2 frog things, 4 purple tail whippers and 2 giant crawler things in front of me gggrrrrrr. I just hang out on my boat sniping now…

You'd be wrong. What people are discussing now is Not the same thing as that thread. It is definitely new with the latest monkey island patch. It is definitely worse. And it is almost assuredly not intentional. A change this drastic would've made the patch notes if it were intended.

    I'm predicting a hotfix Wednesday.

  • @strangeness it was a bug either way. I personally haven’t experienced it being worse than before, it got really bad before too. The shark spawns are instant for me but I’m also only getting one each time. I’m doing solo sloop stuff, mostly grinding small island captains currently. No voyage on the table.

I noticed in the past I get the most spawns when I have a captaincy dig on an island. Like if I’m doing the stash voyages. I like to do those to see what surprise I get. I have too much gold and too many hours in this game.

  • Doing tall tales is super hard right now with all the increased spawn rates. At of the trickster seems impossible. I'm sure I'm just needing practice but wow.

  • @fox-gr pirate's life update all over again

  • Was doing ashore of Gold with 3 others and the spawn amounts were ridiculous

  • I noticed as well but it seemed inconsistent from island to island. One island was so bad we stopped trying to do our OOS quest and just farmed ocean creatures that just kept spawning. Ended up leaving with a stack of gems. Makes doing anything else almost impossible though. I can imagine new players getting wrecked by this.

    No thanks man.

There needs to be ebb and flow.

I miss the days where you could stand around and watch the horizon for 5 minutes and nothing would bother you.

  • Lol it is wild

I rarely go on land, I went to go check it out at sunken grove and it was like one of those zombie modes where they just send 'em all at you non stop

I wonder how much of the lag on servers is from the pve royal rumbles and how much is from the people that are farming the heck outta gems/comms from the royal rumbles

  • @personalc0ffee Both are nice imo(for adventure), too much of anything is not good, if devs could find a balance between the two or some kind of rotation that would be best imo.

  • We're definitely getting spawns in the thousands of ticks faster rate. I would kill a gaggle of skeles only to have more spawn instantly. You cannot fish for islehoppers AT ALL. You struggle to get your voyages done. Digs are dangerous endeavors filled with kegs and deadly crabs. The game is literally difficult to play. This is not something that is happening when people are also on the island with you, or rather on the seas for hectic combat. Just a solo alone is enduring this... The Sea of Thieves' enemies are ENRAGED!

There's a unique... flavor, this introduces. Having this many combatants all at once. There's a thing we've missed on the seas. LIFE.

Now, if this occurred on the isles and seas more (not what we're experiencing now of course) within engagements between players; I'd see smiles abound!

  • Every time someone jumps in the water it instantly spawns 1-4 sharks. Whenever stepping foot on any islands, it instantly spawns skeletons (1-4 groups), phantoms (4-6 of them) and ocean crawlers (3-4 of them). And every time you kill a group it instantly spawns a new group just 1-5 seconds after.

Even came across some new players doing a gold hoarder quest. They were trying to dig for treasure on an island, and they were struggling. When me and my crew met them they had been fighting for 45 minutes unable to dig up anything from the quest they where doing. Me and my crew took care of the enemies so they could dig up their treasure and finish their quest. For new players the game is literally unplayable in its current state.

After the last update on 31st of August the game has gone into hardcore mode regarding the spawn rate of NPC enemies. For new players this means they won't be able to survive out there, other than just staying on their boat and never leave their ship.

  • ok so im not crazy. I didn’t play the last few weeks and yesterday I logged in for a quick merchant lost shipment run. Every time I jumped in the water, even just for a few seconds to ensure I didn’t leave the key behind, I was attacked by a shark or two. Constantly. Lets not even talk about when I found the wreck and was trying to get everything on board. I thought I was perhaps just really unlucky until I saw this post. Funny how this doesn’t seems to affect the meg spawn rate tho..lol

  • Spawn rate goes brrrrrr!

Literally had the same mob spawn 3x in a row stepping on the same spot. It seemed to be chill if I had OoS skellies still active but once they were done, here comes all of their friends lol.

It was fun. I wonder if a "new threat" has everything stirred up or if someone fat fingered the spawn code line

  • @pithyrumble remember all the sharks before the OG hungering one event? It was insane, the amount of teeth chomping you at once. I thought the same as you...
Something big could be coming. Or, sausage fingers is getting a disciplinary.

  • Last night I did two x marks the spot maps and two riddle maps from captains orders on thief's Haven. I ended up with more ocean crawler gems than treasure from the quests and I was mostly avoiding killing the enemies. The downtime between finishing one group of enemies and the next spawning was always just a few seconds. I ended up having to take a strategy of running in circles just to get a second or two to look at my maps. For me it was annoying but I think many newer players would have struggled to complete the voyage at all. When I was new I needed a lot more time to look at the map and explore and last night that would have been impossible.

  • I have a theory:

Maybe Rare installed some kind of a beacon device on the front of the ships, and each time a ship points at you, a wave of enemies spawn to distract you and give the crew a chance to invade you...Now thinking about how many pirates just leave their boats constantly spinning this would check out.

  • Just throwing it out there to Rare that I uninstalled SOT today because of this. I play games to relieve stress and chill and I've never been more stressed playing a game in my life. I'm solo slooping and literally had to fight 5 island crawlers at the same time. It took me an hour to get one chest on an island because I'm attacked nonstop. I think this is incredibly irresponsible of Rare to release this without testing it because there's absolutely no way they wouldn't have noticed it within 5 minutes. I've played 3 days in a row to the same issue so the only way they wouldn't have noticed it is if they didn't even bother testing it. So me and my crew of friends all installed with no intentions of playing it again. Good luck to those that plan on staying.

  • I am trying to do animal quests. I have to agree this is so stupid. being invaded every 40 seconds with Ghost's, Skellingtons, and sea creatures. dip ur toe in the sea ooo sharks there within seconds. im all for some pve but this is not fun after a while.. its annoying and makes me and the wife no want to bother.

  • The Heart of Fire tall tale checkpoint should lessen island mob spawns. Try slapping that on every time you set sail for the time being.

  • @rambobrad said in Enemy spawn rate after today update:

Yeah I was going to mention this. If you have the checkpoint it'll work but it doesn't work in the roar and doesn't work if another crew is nearby as they will trigger it themselves. Also it stops emergent captains from spawning, so if you're grinding those you won't want it. I'm always grinding them so I usually don't put the tall tale down. If I'm doing vaults or OOS captains I will...(if the spawns bother me, they dont always) also doesn't help anyone trying to do any other tall tale since you can't run 2 at the same time.

  • @fuzzytigerttts

Give it a week. They'll hotfix it soon.

  • Glad it’s not me who just noticed this 😂

Carrying mass loot of islands was a nightmare during the spawning rate!

Although I don’t mind it if it’s a temporary thing. Mixes things up a little! But so many sharks and teeth

  • Anyone else notice the enemy spawn rate "seems" higher depending upon crew size? When soloing I haven't seen extraordinary spawn rates, though certainly increased. On a full brig or gally it's brutal though.
