Hourglass Diving Gets Boring?

  • Just some thoughts, interested in any feedback.

Diving over and over again, grinding for curses… it does get boring. It’s not core Sea of Thieves, the Seas we know that’s sailing around looking for adventure.

I do not want these PvP rewards being obtainable outside of PvE however.

Suggestion - add increase rep for sinking a ship on your server without having to dive for it. If you dive, you get the same rep as you currently do.

If you engage naturally with a ship on your server (the way you used to always be wary of Reaper emissaries on the map) you get increased rep, maybe through a unique item the ship drops or something, idk. It’s be a return to a more natural, fluid play style, and a return to a more adventurous, golden age of SoT.

Of course this encourages PvP, even including those who maybe don’t want to fight at all - but the same guidance applies as it always has - keep an eye on the horizon and be ready to run if you need to.

You would still only dive and rise against ships who have hourglass voted on as current. This would just increase opportunities for HG grind and speed up PvP rewards a bit from the brutal grind.

  • @peteloaf777 Ahoy matey!

Thanks for the feedback on this one, may I draw your attention to the recently written post below :) While I know this only covers part of our request it goes some way to explain the allegiance being at the rate it is.

    https://www.seaofthieves.com/community/forums/topic/160900/hourglass-pvp-earning-allegiance/1

  • I might be misunderstanding what is being proposed but is the suggestion for even MORE rewards for hunting down and sinking other players, in addition to those that already exist in the Reaper mechanic(s)? Seems like a recipe for even more grief and "forget it I'm not going to play this game to be fodder" tap outs for a great swath of players.

Also: "It’s not Sea of Thieves, sailing around looking for adventure."

    What?

  • It just lacks the classic organic gameplay of risk and reward. The faction treasury should count towards a loss value so people don't need to dive and are rewarded for opening themselves to invasion while going about doing world events etc. You shouldn't get allegiance though for sinking random ships not opted in.

  • a significant part of the value of HG is reducing pressure on those that organically play and lean into pve

any increase in that pressure is undoing the progress made in the last couple of seasons.

season 8 and 9 only succeeded in maintaining activity throughout the seasons because there was less pressure on random boats to allow a few changes to be effective.

this would be 5 steps back when they just finally took 2 big steps forward as far as risk/reward and the organic environment go.

if this game ever goes back to those couple of years where people were getting run out of risk/reward with heavy coordination/hopping/server sharing it'll be in some real trouble if they keep the seasonal design.

  • Diving over and over again, grinding for curses… it does get boring. It’s not Sea of Thieves, sailing around looking for adventure.

    hahahaha....

  • You want increased rep for attacking random ships that potentially don't want to fight? Sounds like losing in a fair fight is what is boring 😅

  • I think the issue is that they never intended HG to be a never-ending series of dives and battles. The devs always described it as something you might do during part of your session, then see a FOF after the battle and do that, then maybe defend with the FOF loot, etc. If diving after diving after diving is boring, simply stop doing that. No one is forcing you to do something you find boring. Mix it up a little.

  • Its the size of the grind and the desireability of the curse/cosmetics that get to you that put you into that headspace, where the activity is no longer fun.

Sunk-cost fallacy (pun intended) and the mmo version of FoMO, where time spent playing a game but not making progress on 'that specific thing' feels like a total waste

    Easy solution!
    Don't.

This, especially since lets be real, who is wearing these things for more than a week after getting them?

I ground my ship to Ship 60 for the ship cosmetics and walked away, so happy!

It comes down to curating your experience. It's a sandbox game! Cannons and quick swap aren't the only skills. If you don't like something learn how to avoid it.
