Ego on cosmetics

  • We all have favourites and some of us want to show off our stuff. Even if you like to go with just underwear, you are giving a message there. But during a battle we can rarely show ours or look for others.

So, what about a popup describing what a character is watching when we look at it by the spyglass? My idea is focused mostly on ego. Not so much in strategics. I am thinking on different levels of detail depending on the distance.
    For ships:

    • very far: Only ship type
    • far: flag names
    • near: name of the sails and hull
    • close: name of the figurehead, capstan and cannons

    For characters:

    • far: curses
    • near: name of costume, jacket, hat ...
    • close: small details like name of hook, peg, shirt, belt, boots...

I wouldn't like to involve strategics. I consider is a bad idea to add island names, shops, npc names, usernames .... but... cosmetics... that could be fun.

In the other hand I think this is a basic feature. I wander why is not implemented already. I suppose it must be a reason but I don't understand why.

  • @captthreepwood sounds like UI clutter tbh and too much info to be reading at once when scanning the horizon.

mmmh... the cluttering is relative because you are imagining a specific cluttered design, but designers usually surprise me.

And about the horizon scanning is not related either because I am talking about situation within a radius where you can effectively see the entire object in the front of the lens. Not when you are looking for enemies around. For example, I'd like to identify a hat when I am at 20 meters of the pirate.

Besides, suppose it gets annoying for some people, since it is only cosmetics information and offers no advantage to the gameplay, it would be disabled from the settings menu like the companies banners at the outpost

  • Or even better!! Use the secondary button on the spyglass to identify objects! Because right now the spyglass is the only object that does absolutely nothing when the secondary button is pressed.

  • @tesiccl Plus it already takes too long for a ship name to come up, loading more data will just make it worse.

I think that problem is not related to the feature itself but to the notification's engine. Let's suppose they fix it :D. Let's focus on the idea of knowing what the other person is wearing and what options the ships has.

  • We'd probably have to focus first on just how few of us care what other pirates are wearing or what capstan and wheel their ship has. Almost none of us, actually.

I don't need to have someone's cosmetic loadout pop up on my screen [mod edit]. You'll find most pirates on the seas share that sentiment.

There's enough info that pops up on the HUD with the Ship and Captain's name and/or title, and the ship & island banners. If it's a fully-staffed galleon then you'd have a wall of text with one ship and four pirates' worth of cosmetics data blocking whatever you're trying to aim at.

Yeah, you could put a toggle on it in the settings but then 99.8% of players would turn it off the first day it became a thing and never turn it on again.

...and the other 0.2% of players would be here in the forum asking HOW to turn it off.

There IS, however, a groundbreaking, dare I say CRAZY option left open to those few on the seas who might be interested in what kind of cosmetics the other person has equipped: a revolutionary technique which consists of asking a series of questions in chat or text and waiting for the other person to provide the answers.

  • Yeah, this seems unneccesarh to say the least
