Make the Kraken great again

  • This has probably been brought up before, but I want to say it again. The Kraken sucks. I have been playing on and off since launch and I can remember the days when the Kraken was a much bigger deal. It was a rare occurrence that would excite every player, it felt more like I was Jack Sparrow or something. Needless to say it was exciting. Nowadays, it feels lackluster at best and a nuisance at worst. I play on a duo sloop most often and it just feels like a waste of time. We kill two tentacles and then it disappears. Its loot is worse than both the meg and the skelly ship, yet it takes the same amount of effort to kill. It also forces you to fight it unlike the other pve which you can out run. The only thing the Kraken had going for it was that it was rare, and now it doesn't have that either. I wouldn't mind the Kraken being more common if it was actually fun, but it just really isn't. I feel like it needs to be a bigger threat than it is. I want to feel like I am actually at risk of being devoured if I make a mistake or something. I don't want it to be too overpowered obviously, but I want it to be strong enough where a crew that is not paying attention could actually go down. As it is, the Kraken doesn't feel threatening and that doesn't make it as fun. I am interested to see what anyone else thinks.

  • Spicy Kraken needs to come back.

You can still turn to better wind and ditch it with no damage and minimal inconvenience.

  • @gekflek I personally agree but with the general direction of the game it tends to only be getting easier to be more welcoming to new players so I don't see it happening.

  • @gekflek you only have to look at the Kraken and the fights over!

  • @gekflek the kraken was never a rare spawn it has always been between world events but at launch it only attacked Galleons and with only two ship types at the time yea it felt super rare where as of now it attacks every ship type and there's three ship types but I agree the kraken needs an up date maybe add different types or change how it spawns in making it a roaming threat that spawns in if you get to close to where it's currently at for example your sailing in Shores of Plenty and the kraken is near mermaids hideaway if you sail down near the island it attacks but there no telling where it is

  • I can remember the days when the Kraken was a much bigger deal

And player’s complain about it being to hard so they nerf it.
They even made it easier if your solo.

If you want a fight, crew up

  • @burnbacon I never thought the kraken was tough though I kinda miss days where it only attacked galleons I can't tell you how many galleon crew got caught by kraken why chasing my sloop good times

  • @gekflek

For people that have been playing since launch it's not really fair to point to something you've encountered so many times over YEARS as stale? There needs to be some balance between an encounter like this being merely threatening and session ending. Experienced players know what to do and how to deal. Less experienced ones still get the dread and experience you miss, without it being an automatic death sentence for your ship and toons if they find a way to cope.

I actually got caught by one solo slooping the other day after being away from the game for a long time. When it first happened I was bummed in the moment because based on previous experiences from around launch and a time after I felt like it was probably going to be a hard end to my trip to the port. But, despite being plucked off the deck and ALMOST sunk was able to get back and prevail in the end. It was tense and definitely walked up to the edge of disaster but still prevailed in the end and when it was over was undeniably fun and memorable.

Obviously that is not the same as an experienced Galleon crew laughing off an encounter they've mastered over a long period of time but striking that balance is no small challenge.

I do like the idea of variants though, if possible, both cosmetically and size/strength/threat wise.

Also, for good and bad I couldn't help but think of "MAKA" over the subject lol.

  • It does need to have a slight difficulty increase but maybe have something where difficulty is also increased based on player xp or times fought, etc.

  • Its difficulty depends kind of on the ship type imo.

On sloop its a piece of cake.
On brig and gally its a battle, still nothing world ending if you know what you do,
but I remember few monthes ago I did actually sink to a kraken on a gally - playing open queue with randoms, so, yeah, but still.
I think on sloop is easiest, on gally is hardest, as you have long run ways and holes on multiple floors when it attacks
