Repeated Hourglass Opponents

  • Getting trounced by the same person four times in a row in hourglass battles isn't fun. Can we please get something in the code that after a guy decimates you that many times in a row you don't fight him anymore? At least for a bit?

  • @theprogramer64 it’s based on availability of players while you’re in the queue. If you and the other person are the only 2 people in the queue, then you’d both be forced to wait for someone else, and that’s not a good scenario for either of you.

  • @tesiccl I agree, thus the suggestion.

  • @theprogramer64 study your mistakes and through a series of losses you will learn to beat this player :)

  • Getting trounced by the same person four times in a row in hourglass battles isn't fun

Just means nobody else is playing.

  • @burnbacon I understand, hence the suggestion.

  • @theprogramer64 so you’d rather be forced to wait a long time for an opponent than face the same one again and get a little experience than nothing and waiting in the tunnels? Somehow I don’t think so.

  • @tesiccl Yes I would.

  • Our matchmaking is a variation on the ELO system and takes into account yours crews wins/losses.

When you are diving and trying to find a match we have to match your region, ship size, faction and skill level.

If there are no suitable matches we open that up so you can have same faction battles as well as opposing, we also broaden the skill gap.

We have to always keep your region and shipsize matching the correct types, so if we still can't find a suitable match the only thing we can now change is the skill, so the net broadens further until a match is found. As such you may sometimes face off against more or less skilled players and, depending on shipsize, region and time of day, this may mean you meet the same crew multiple times.

Our priority is getting you into a fight so you're not endlessly waiting in tunnels.

  • @meroviel I know. I am suggesting a change.

  • I am happy to speak to the team around a system to potentially lessen this experience without ruining the hourglass experience and leaving you stuck in tunnels, but it may not be possible given the multiple factors that go into trying to get you a fight.

  • @ixxxoloff
So what if you just came out of the water and a couple of seconds later you are getting hit with every single cannon by the opponent from very far away?
    Where is the mistake there?
I went up against one guy that was exactly that, and it was session after session the same guy, frustrating because i never even managed to fire back.
I understand practice makes perfect but these particular instances make HG unplayable.
I did manage to sink him because he made a huge mistake when we both crashed in to an island and he got stuck in a way where he had no shot and i did.
A few days later he reapeared and same thing, sinking me immediately from very far away, shots i normally wouldn't even bother trying because the probability of hitting is maybe 5%
Don't know if he was that good or maybe using some aim cheat but all of a sudden he disappeared and haven't seen him again.

I've had a few sessions vs other players similar to that and went against them multiple times in a row.
One probably goes against them so often becuase whomever is signing up for HG get sunk in the same way and end up not going back.

The point being there is no practicing for an opponent like that when you emerge from the water and practically getting sunk that very moment.

  • @eva1977 I don't think these cases will strive for objectivity. We can't accurately determine if your opponents used cheats or not. For more objectivity in that the system of picking players is bad, there should be an anti-cheat that says, "that's not a cheat". So your opponent is a very strong honest player and the player selection system is bad. Or the anti-cheat will say: "This player is a cheater". So the player selection system works well. But, of course, there is also a variant that the matching system thinks you are a strong player, and that's why you fall for strong players. To summarise, we can say that we cannot accurately assess the success of the player selection system until there is a system (anti-cheat) that will filter out dishonest players.
P.S. I hope you understood what I wrote because I used a translator.

  • @theprogramer64
If you keep getting the same opponent, log out of the game and log back in. That's happened to me before, and I ended up messaging him after he beat me for the fifth time, joking that "We're the only two playing right now, aren't we?" He suggested logging off and restarting, and I was able to break the loop.

  • @eva1977 not enough info to judge on cheats, but in response to your suggestion that no way of practicing that range.....do any naval event, skelly fleet, flameheart, ghost ship voyage, and intentionally play further back and practice long distance shots.
