Bounty System Idea

  • I've been watching a lot of Mandalorian recently and I had the thought "why isn't there a bounty system in Sea of Thieves?" And that got me thinking of how a bounty system can be implemented into the game, and here's how:

In order to make a bounty, you need to know the name of a pirate and a terrible thing they did, like hacking or toxic behavior, and you need gold. You'll need to go to the shipwright shop, where the bounty board is, and you can use it to take bounties or make bounties. For the names, you'll be provided with a list of all the players in the server, and you have to state the reason for the bounty, and you have to personally put gold down for the reward so that way there's no way of getting more money than you put in. More than 1 person can grab the same bounty, and to find your bounty, you have to follow clues such as where they were last seen, which can be updated if someone sees the bounty's ship, what ship type they're on, and what they were recently doing. Bounties can only be claimed if you grab the bounty from the board and if you kill that person, then you get the reward, and the bounty will follow you from server to server until it's claimed. Also, there would be bounty alliances, where people who are looking for the same bounty can use a special alliance flag to alliance and it will work like the regular alliance when it comes to gold. Also, the entire crew of the ship gets the full amount of the reward, but the crew that put up the bounty can't hunt the bounty and get the reward.

Let me know what you guys think cuz I think this will add more variety to the game.

  • @devtryak The problem with a bounty system is griefing players and the encouragement of toxicity via this. This idea isn't a new one for the forums and has been discussed at length as well. From what i gathered, some people liked it but there was a lot of disagreement for others reasons than just the one above.

  • @tesiccl

True, I honestly didn't think of that. Maybe this could be implemented, but with many tweaks.

  • @devtryak Honestly, if an idea has to be tweaked and compromised so much it doesn't feel like the original idea, it probably isn't worthy of being implemented. If this game had a "friendly" mode (don't hate me mods) then yes, you probably could do bounties, but i don't think it works for a PvP environment.

  • Knowing who is on your server can be abused - people will go searching for people they know, don't like or annoy a streamer for instance.

  • @devtryak Hunting specific players is terrible game design, especially for a game with kids playing.

How many parents do you think want their 12 yo to be hunted by some Sweat Legend?

  • you'll be provided with a list of all the players in the server, and you have to state the reason for the bounty

If they ever did this, I say they make it so it shows the players but doesnt show the actual names. Just random names and every time you load it the same player isnt the same name. (That way nobody gets bullied)

The only clue is its current Last island it past or was last seen. It wont update.

If player leaves server, that is it. Bounty is removed and gold is non refunded. (The player will also get a warning "Bounty")

Player can earn the reward for themselves if they go to the same Outpost and claim it. "Turning themselves in"

  • Bounties! Gosh no, it’s bad enough on RDR2! Leave SoT out of it :)

  • @foambreaker speaking of, I’ve had the mum of some kid come on the mic yelling because we sunk the kid. There was no toxicity but it’s just because he wanted us to stop and we said no sorry. The party spam invites to get us on comms was unreal, had to accept then suddenly this older female voice comes on and we had to explain that this was the game and it wasn’t anything bad against her son. Don’t think I’ll ever forget that xD

  • Players have hundreds of millions in gold....

    Not fair to newbies.

  • Cool idea, it works pretty well in Fortnite. In SoT, implementing this mechanic would create a good incentive for player retention and engagement

  • @devtryak bounty system would be abuseable as based on in game options. If someone toxic then raise a support ticket, toxic players would gang up to raise and bounty new players, peoples definition of toxicity can vary. Some players tell me I'm toxic and griefing for stealing their loot. This is their expectation at fault not my behaviour. Them getting Salty and calling me slurs is the only thing the devs would deem toxic in this encounter

  • @hiradc

True. I honestly didn't think this through. I blame watching Mandalorian and my "do now, think later" mentality.

  • @devtryak nothing wrong with getting excited about an idea, it's a sad truth that with any idea you have to consider how it could be abused

  • @foambreaker This one made me laugh. Sweat legends hunting little screaming children actually sounds like a legit thing people would get entertainment from.

@Devtryak But yeah, I think bounties are cool. Definitely think that all the tweaks and serious brainstorming would be worth it, if we get bounties that work well.

  • This is one of those posts that turns up once in a while in the forums for one reason or another and I still think it's not a good idea. The bounty system turned GTA5 online in trolls paradise, not to mention RDR2 that was even worse.

As for SOT we already have our own bounty targets, every Reaper's ship carries that red flag that marks them wherever they go. In my opinion this is a very honest system as those who decide to fly the Reaper's flag do so at their own peril.

  • @devtryak Not a bad idea entirely but it wouldn't work in the game because that's likely going to promote bad behavior amongst your own crew. Plus there's already bounty based voyages offered by the Order of Souls so conceptually, it's somewhat redundant.
