Is there PVP with closed crews?

  • I kn/ow what closed and open crews are. Open crew means the game matches you up with random people online to fill your ship. Closed crew means you can only invite friends, and if you have no friends online/none of your friends own the game you're on your own. I've preferred to play on closed crew but can't seem to find PVP matches anywhere. Am I truly alone, or are there other crews that I'm just missing?

  • So here's the thing, on a sloop, when you choose to do pvp hourglass closed crew, the game will try to matchmake you with the same amount of players as you have in your crew. This means that if you solo sloop, you will only ever join matches with other solo sloopers. I'm assuming that when you say you prefer closed crew you mean your solo slooping? If that's the case, match making should be fairly quick, so perhaps your area isn't as active during the time you tried to play? If you're defending and only vote for hourglass then yeah, it's going to take forever sometimes, but if you're ship divs into the queue for matchmaking, then it shouldn't take more than 10 minutes. Average times should be 2-5 minutes

  • @red0demon0 Thanks for the info. I didn't even know about the hourglass. I'm still learning, so I'll definitely look into it.

I need to ask...you said you can't find PvP matches AND you didn't know about hourglass? So you just went on adventure and couldn't find other ships? Or what is this?

  • He is most likely thinking that closed crew is a separate game mode where you can then go on with your friends to pick between pve and pvp modes.

No, you can not and will not be able to do this in this game. So let's just lay that to rest.

SoT is not a combat focused game, despite what you've seen and heard. It is an open sandbox sailing pirate game.

It is not designed and built for the huge levels of combat that most seem to be looking for when this is brought up.

The hourglass on the table is the closest thing you will get to a "pvp match" but it is not like traditional, you can and will be interferred with/3rd parties joining at times.

  • Open and closed crew are exactly the same, it puts you in the same servers which ever you choose, closed crews only difference is just that random people cant join your crew. Otherwise, there are always other ships in the server you are in always, if not it will merge you to a different server with more crews sailing.

  • @schwammlgott I've played very little (only done the initial Gold Hoarders voyage as far as campaigns go). I have done some PvP with the hourglass, but aside from that I haven't seen any other ships.

Nice, this is something you don’t see often in here...someone who starts SoT and doesn't complain about being attacked all the time.

Now...the only difference between open and closed crews is, that in open crew anybody can join you. In closed crews just your friends or invited people can join.
There are days you don’t see any ship in hours, but they are there, maybe hiding...
One way to (maybe) find other ships to fight (besides hourglass) is going for events (big skull-cloud, red or green tornado or shipcloud in the sky)...they aren't that contested as they use to be, but it's a good start to find other crews...there are also 2 red-eyed skull clouds, one with 3 red marks on the forehead...the one with no extra marks is the "Fort of the Damned", which is a player activated event...if you see that one, there will be another crew there for sure.

One more thing: in SoT there is no real campaign. There are the Tall Tales, which come close to be some kind of campaign...

Ah I think I get where you are coming from now, sorry about that. So let me try to help you fix some misconceptions:

this game doesn't have a pve or pvp mode specifically, it's both, pvpve.

What this means is that the game basically behaves like a sandbox that you can go out, explore, and even do some voyages/ adventures throughout but there's always the possibility of other players coming for you, there's no private server in game, and as extension, no private server where if you solo, only other solo crews will ever join you..

In terms of open/ close crew this only refers to your crew, and not other crews, nor the server. If you pick open crew, you open your crew for others to join as they please or you may find yourself joining other players in their crew, if you choose closed crew then you lock yourself out from joining other player's crews or lock others from joining your crew, in other words, unless you choose to invite players, you will be playing solo in your crew. NOT solo in the game, regardless of open or closed crew, other crews will still share the same server you're in and may potentially confront your crew in some pvp action.

The world/ server is populated at max with 5 different opposing crews (Used to be 7 and I'm not sure if devs have reverted this change or not, they reduced it due to server issues and not as a contemplated choice so it may have, or will be changed in the future), sometimes crews leave, sometimes crews join the server/ map, it happens randomly. If the server detects too few crews, say your by yourself, the server will hop and merge your server with another that has other crews in them. Basically what ends up happening from our perspective is that sometimes we're going to see quite a few ships in proximity and for the entire gameplay sessions you might spot lots of new ships coming in, but sometimes we won't be able to see any ships at all.

This is one of the reasons you will also see some people here complaining that it's impossible to do anything without getting attacked, they had a bad experience filled with ships and didn't give the game a chance, but then on the other end of the spectrum you will also see people complaining about how empty the game map is, it just all depends on what day/ time you're playing, and just how lucky you might be.

Keep in mind that even if other crews pop into the server you're in, they might not be as excited to start a confrontation, and may be avoiding you. Experienced players will spot you long before you reach near, and even if you go into pursuit, they will give you a run long enough to last hours.

So if you're looking for some quick action the hourglass is your best bet, vote on it, and you will set yourself up for defending in a proximity matchmaking, vote on the map that appears next to the hourglass and you will be kicked into a queue type room for 1-6 minutes, give or take, before you get thrown into another server to confront another player in pvp. It's a closed arena style type of game but keep in mind, that this isn't a private server, even though you can't leave the battle until either one of you is defeated, other players in the server can still join and leave your arena area, and potentially hunt you, the other player, or both. It's a rare occurrence, but it's one that may still happen.

Hope this helped clear things up and answered your question as well. If you have any other questions please feel free to ask :)
