Repair Costs Still??

  • I'm probably late to the party on this one, but I just noticed it today.

You lowered the threshold of many captaincy milestones so we can unlock trinkets with less grind. You decreased the prices of many of those trinkets so we could decorate or ships. You made it free to lock cosmetics onto our ship's hull and sail et al. But it still costs us money to repair the ship and let us see those cosmetics we don? In what world does this make sense?

There are so many ways our ship could get damaged beyond our control; emergent megalodons/ships/krakens are entirely unavoidable and deal damage to ship, yet you deign to charge us to see the cosmetics you let us equip for free? I don't know why this upsets me so much, repairing the ship doesn't actually cost all that much. But you just went over the captaincy features, lowered many of the requirements and costs, and yet this one slipped through?

I've never repaired any of my ships and will continue to avoid it so long as it's not free. Is this a feature anyone actually likes? I know I have nothing to spend my money on and this is a trivial cost/complaint, but it's just silly that it costs gold. I honestly don't know why this frustrates me...

Yeah and? You got 9/10 things free here, you got to pay for something.

There are so many ways our ship could get damaged beyond our control

In what way do these "damages" make your trinkets unusable or see your cosmetics?

repairing the ship doesn't actually cost all that much

    End.

Likewise. I like showing off my battle scars, chickens love scars :P

Is this a feature anyone actually likes?

Yeah, since...I dont use it and doesn't really ruin the game to spend what 5K?

Its actually 1/4 things free here not 9/10.
You pay for the ship, the repairs and the trinkets. You can save cosmetics got free.

The scars can cover some hull livery which may bother some players, if it was free taking the time to sail to an outpost or Arena during an adventure for a free paint job sounds reasonable if you're into that. BUT ONLY IF THE SHIPS IS FULLY FIXED WITH PLANKS BEFORE. If it's leaking it should cost gold.

repairing the ship doesn't actually cost all that much

    End.

It can add up if you are repairing Galleons compared to a Sloop, solo players may be OK with covering their own bill but if you plan on playing with an unproductive crew you could see a cost up to 25-30k per adventure.

Cool so it could make you feel more special if battleacared ships were more uncommon.

It dose not ruin the game but it's a poor state of mind to be in that Quality of Life improvement are only considered when they break or ruin the game.
It's neat that you don't use a feature but maybe consider different points of views in a conversation.

  • It would be cool to find a way back to a port with a shipwright, have to pay for a "ship rebuild" to spawn your boat back after sunk. Gold is easily collected so might have something to spend it on. Players trade gold with other sailors they come across for a lift to port or you could buy a rowboat from a drifter on island to try and get yourself to port.

  • Our ships should be REPAIRED for free at the beginning of every session

Absolutely pointless and annoying feature retaining damage across sessions

  • Agree, spent hundreds of thousands doing this, if I wanted my ship to 'tell a story' via damage, could just ram it at the docks at the outpost I have spawned until im satisfied...Besides with millions being robbed from trinkets made cheap this would have been a welcome change.

  • the price could be cut down a bit, but at the end of the day, is it gamebreaking? is it something that will completely ruin the game for you? its a simple feature that was added for the players that wanted their ship to feel like their ship and not like one they just got 5 minutes ago. im fairly sure you can live with a couple dents in your ship, its not like it affects your gameplay at all.

  • I'm not entirely sure why people are so against having to spend their gold...

A year or two ago people were absolutely BEGGING Rare to add a gold sink, and now that we kind of have it, everyone wants it gone. Cheaper trinkets, no repair costs, no cosmetic saving costs... If anything, having these little costs make it a tiny bit more immersive. Look at RDR2 or RDO; you can buy a meal or drink for a couple of cents. After a while, getting money is no problem and you can rack up hundreds to thousands fairly easily, very similar to SoT, but just having that little cost makes it feel that much more... "alive"

  • I wouldn't mind slightly lower prices for galleons, only because if you grind out pvp, your ship gets absolutely blasted all over and the gold price to fix it up adds up quick, well beyond the gold reward one is able to attain throughout a gameplay session.

I also think all captained ships should be playable across any mode but as with the hourglass, I feel that many will be put off from using their own galleons due to the loss in gold. 20k+ gold for a complete fix is not worth it, especially for new players.

In the opposition, one may argue that it's only hourglass, I'd argue it's not, any huge fight such as Athena's fortress fights, cursed skelly fleets, and ghost ships also may pose a hefty price for pirates. 20k in gold is already quite a few treasures that need to be collected to offset the price of fixing said ship.

I ask that all may also refrain from posting without thinking of the effects this may have for new captains and ship owners who are still fairly new to the game. The rewards and gold long time players may receive may be significantly larger than those received by newer or lower leveled players who may be blind sided by these expenses, especially if they haven't unlocked emissaries yet.

Another argument some may also propose is that fixing ships isn't forced on the player as it's really a cosmetic change. My counter argument is that this then becomes a negative aspect of the captaincy mechanic. Again, it may not be a forced choice to own a ship, but it certainly becomes a punishment for trying to get into battles with some AI enemies or for going into storms, players trolling, pvp attackers, etc...

It's important I emphasize I'm speaking in defense for a reduction in price cost of gold to fix ships and not a complete removal of it.

  • Early on with Captaincy, I was in support of keeping the repair costs as a way of justifying the time savings gained from Sovereigns. I also saw it as a reason to keep turning in loot as it was a sort of gold sink.

Since then, it's become exponentially easier/faster to rack up gold. They've also made gold even more pointless than it was before by making things less expensive.

At this point, might as well get rid of the ship repair costs.
