More Land-Based PvP

  • First of all, I'd like to say this is an excellent game with an excellent and unique Ship-VS-Ship combat system, this easily one of my all-time favorite games! I love shooting at other ships with cannons, closing with them and then boarding them for close-quarters combat and fighting other players on the decks of ships on the open seas! I am also enjoying the new Hourglass Ship-VS-Ship mechanic very much!

However, I believe the focus is far too naval-based and there should be more options, or more reasons for leaving your ship behind to go about fighting on land. The most exciting experiences for me in this game are when two groups of players for whatever reason decide to hunt each other down and fight it out on an island/outpost (however, this is far too rare of an occurrence!). I recall long ago in a game called Pirates of the Caribbean Online, there were options for both Ship-VS-Ship (SvS) and Player-VS-Player (PvP) matchmaking, which I absolutely adored.

SvS and PvP are two different methods of fighting that require two different skillsets, and some players are better at one than the other. In the game I mentioned above, those two methods were ranked separately with each one awarding you with very cool titles and badges. Some players lived for PvP and were absolute top dogs in the PvP arena while hardly ever going out to sea, and some lived solely for SvS and were masters in the domain of naval combat, but couldn't PvP very well.

I personally love them both, but with a slight preference for PvP, especially on open land! This appeals to me because:

    • Solid ground - Fighting on solid ground is stable and refreshing (Refreshing due to its rarity)
    • More Space - You have more space to fight in, allowing the use of the full spectrum of weaponry to be much more viable instead of the common blunderbuss meta. As it stands currently, you can use any weapon you want... as long as you also carry a blunderbuss, or are an absolute God-tier, quick-draw marksman with any gun up close and never miss a shot and all of your shots register.
    • Dynamic Terrain - Fighting on islands/outposts is fascinating because it gives you the opportunity to utilize a wide assortment of terrain in interesting ways. Be it in the jungle, in the hills, on the beaches, on docks, in the streets while using buildings for cover, or in caves etc.

What I suggest for appealing to the PvP-geared players is a sort of 'Capture-The-Something' type game where two crews go off to fight to seize an item or objective on a random island in the Sea of Thieves. Once you are on the island, your spawn-point switches from being your ship to being a random spot on the outskirts of that particular island. Your spawn-point will switch back to your ship ONLY when you successfully seize the objective/item, or exit that game mode. Even if your ship sinks while you're fighting on that island, your spawn point will still stay on the island until one of the crews wins, one of the crews exits the game mode, or one of your ships leaves the radius of the island.

  • Needs to happen.
At the start of the season, my crew had a weird fight over an ashen winds where we constantly had to chase a brig off, so people were cycling between fighting the boss and Fighting the brig.

Then once we brought down the boss, it was a scramble over the loot, as we knew we couldn't catch them in a crosswind and they knew they couldn't sink us.

Eventually we got control over all the loot and sank them when they gave up on theft alone, but it was a huge change of pace, and a lot more fun than naval's spawnkill gameplay loop.
Just 2 ships circling the island cannoning people off to sprint after loot.

  • I'd like to see a simple new mechanic I call 'Docking' or 'Mooring' where players can go to an island/Outpost and select to officially Dock at a pier or Moor their ship off the coast; effectively switching the crew's spawn point from their ship to that particular island/outpost. Even if the ship sinks, that crew will respawn at that island/outpost indefinitely until they take a mermaid back to their ship.

Another possibility is the crew could switch their crew spawn point from the ship to a portable item (like a hammock, campfire, totem, or even a rowboat etc) that could be placed anywhere on an island or at least on the shore until that item/rowboat is destroyed by other players, or that spawn is 'canceled' by the crew, or brought back to their ship.

This way players can effectively occupy and defend fortresses for fun and other players can enjoy sieging them or make an island/outpost they really fancy into their home base where the crew can have just hang out and have party while being able to defend it if need be and not having to worry about their ship.

  • @scheneighnay I 100% agree

  • In my opinion there should be a tdm mode where u spawn into a lobby with other people and u vote to fight on a island and when the timer or something is gone everyone ship spawn around the island. (Sorry for bad english)

  • @finnyyapper7735

    Great idea!

  • There are a lot of games out there for landlubbers where you can fight on all kind of land based scenarios like PUBG, COD etc. What makes SOT unique in my opinion is the ability of a crew to come together and make use of their ship of choice in the best way possible.

  • @olde-grim-jack thx

  • @metal-ravage Yeah, I guess that makes a lot of sense if you don't think about it. You might want to possibly consider that COD and PUBG aren't large, beautiful open-world pirate MMOs with muskets, sword fights, magical tridents, sharks, snakes, sirens, ships to sail away on, or loot to fight over, etc., etc. etc...

Are you seriously saying I could switch games and play a modern shooter instead and get the same experience as fighting on an island in Sea of Thieves? I know you love boarding cramped ships and 1-shot blunderbuss(ing) noobies on their sloops, but consider the novelty and rarity of fighting on a decent-sized island and engaging in pistol/EoR duels at range (if you wanted). You could still use the blunderbuss if you utilize rocks and buildings for cover and bushes for concealment.

I think with the right objectives, we could engineer the game so that land-based combat is slightly more common and everybody is happy.

  • Some unique game modes would be fun but they would have to be time limited and cycled through so they don't get stale. For instance a recurring adventure, second weekend each month.

Players sail through a portal and they are transported to a unique server. Two gallies are permently anchored at either end of a long island like Wanders refuge. So two teams of 8 pirates. Only way to sink the ship is to dig up chest of rage, sorrow, kegs etc and set them off on the other teams ship. To get these dig sites you have to transport a chest of gorg back to your ship and hand it over to a drunken npc who gives your team a map. Map has zero firebombs or wood.

  • @olde-grim-jack Try applying the same rules on a FOF contested by 3 galleons and you will have all the land experience you require.

As for the graphics side try Fortnite, you seem like the kind to enjoy it.

  • @metal-ravage ad hominem.

I would agree it would be an interesting game mode option, it would be nice to see some additions to organized pvp

  • Ugh, this would be a huge mistake for Rare.

The non-naval combat is just not that great, double gun and done and that is ok because this is not an FPS.

If they add this or anything like it the outcome will be mass complaints about the combat model. Need more weapons, fix double gun, etc. Then Rare will be forced to either commit to changes outside the games core scope or endure mass whining and bad online reviews.

    Huge huge mistake.

  • @foambreaker When the game released the naval wasn't great and the game was destined for doom and bad reviews from day one. They slowly improved it and are now standing strong.

Nobody is saying, release the land based combat and don't change anything nor try to improve gun combat.

All people are asking for new ways to enjoy sea of thieves.

    Why?

Imo it would be beneficial for all. You can clearly tell that people's naval combat skill improved drastically after release of hourglass. Having a land based combat mode, would help to push everybody's skill even higher.

Perhaps this could be a time limited event.

Like we have a gold rush hour, we could have some kind of pvp hour. You could access it via portal/ferry/legends tavern and the even would only be active on certain hours during the day.
