21:9 Widescreen advantage

  • I just read a post @triheadedmonkey replied to about the limited FOV

    "The game is designed for 90 FoV Maximum, anything beyond that looks distorted and broken."

    More and more players are running a 21:9 aspect ratio for the higher field of view it offers.
    Now, this wouldn't be a problem if everyone could adjust the FOV to what they like but as of right now, players with a better and more expensive monitor/graphics card will have an advantage.

    Also, what is defined as "distorted and broken" for the team, might actually please other players. There is no accounting for taste.

    Any plans to level the playing field on that part ?

  • @warsoncreeps just look at some videos online about people who have broken ToS and extended the FoV and you’ll see exactly why it looks broken and ridiculous.

    You gave me flashbacks of CS:S players rocking their old monitors for the 4:3 ratio.
    Any advantage that requires fiddling with software or having better hardware is bad. And the only culprit i see is the limited FOV.
    I hope we get an answer from the team

    Strawman argument, i am not talking about toxic players. I am talking about an advantage gained with better hardware.
    Also: There is no accounting for taste.

  • @warsoncreeps It started with 1.6 and I still use it today(switching from one to another from time to time), pros and cons to both resolutions, I think knowing and understanding yourself is more important to know which one would work better for you. FPS boost is nice on 4:3 tho ^^

    How did you get the feeling i wanted an advantage ? I want everyone on the same baseline regardless of hardware or software

  • @warsoncreeps I started playing on stretch res before I quit the game this month.
    It does give an advantage, also seeing a bunch of 120 FoV Clips through out the years, I really do not get their claim of the game looking ''distorted & broken'' Apart from say pirate shoulder geometry clipping when looking side by side raising an achor for example, the game looks fine and imho cooler when you can physically see the reload cocking animations on the EOR and flintlock, something that is not possible on 90 FoV Stretched or not.

  • There are no intentions to widen the FoV beyond the current 90. The game was built for, and around, that setting being in place. Changing it distorts pirate models and other such items and makes the game (at least from my experience from looking at pictures of when folks forced the higher one) look like a fishbowl. In other words... no thanks.

    That said, with there being no intention to change this (as has been made clear by the devs themselves) we will go ahead and drop anchor on it here.
