We have to adress the elephant in the room here(pun intended)
I took a break from this game for 5 to 6 months because there were to many cheaters in this game.
So i come back to the game, maybe thinking that the developers take this issue seriously, and build a decent anti cheat.
Damn, was i stupid to think this.
Placed a topic yesterday about some cheaters we encountered, and i got shutdown superfast.
The censorship on this forum is just insane.
The people in North Korea have more freedoms then we do in this forum.
It is time that the developers be honest to their customers about this cheating nonsens.
This is getting out of hand.
If the developers can not or will not solve this cheating problem, then they should be honest to their customers.
Let's see how fast this post is going to be shutdown :)
How long does it take to build a decent anti cheat?
The forums are full of threads about cheating, shutting a thread down from time to time isn't shutting people down.
They don't benefit in any way from cheating and they definitely don't benefit from the negative press of it all around socials. Of course they want to bring it way down just like everyone else.

If they really wanted to bring it down, then you would think they would build some kind of anti cheat right?
Or do they not know how?
Maybe then bring in some external team.
Or is it because not enough players are playing the game anymore?
I wonder what the total player count is worldwide.@themacmurdock said in How long does it take to build a decent anti cheat?:

I wonder what the total player count is worldwide.I know some things about some things but I dunno much about the intricacies of cheat removal in an online video game and I don't pretend to.
Cheating existing doesn't necessarily mean much about their effectiveness as everything has cheating, I dunno what they do, how many they remove, how much they catch, what they are working on.
I do know that they are trying to get it under control.
Recently saw a video from some guy who is mad about some things, but it also explained some cheats; for instance they have removed the ability to see who's on your server (used to target streamers and developers).
Anti-cheat isn't just one bit of software that's a cure for all (unless they'd introduce some system that is aware of the things you're running on your PC or Xbox). They're probably busy to adapt their code to defeat cheats on a case-by-case basis.
Theres a difference between censoring, and maintaining the rules. They dont let you call out specifics because of witch hunts.
As for the main question, considering there are cheaters in games that are far more competitive than this, i would say its pretty hard to make a good anti cheat. You play major titles like halo, fortnite, or cod, and you will still run into cheaters. Its not about having just an anti cheat, its about needing hardware bans, because theres not a whole lot you can do to bypass having your specific hardware locked out of a game.
Ahoy @themacmurdock !
We have a zero tolerance approach to any form of in-game hacking or cheating.
You can find out more about this topic in Episode 5 of the Sea of Thieves Official Podcast, which is a discussion about cheating in the game with senior members of the dev team.
Meanwhile, if you suspect people of cheating, please report them to our Customer Support team and do not forget to provide some graphic/audio evidence. Here is a guide on how to do it.
That said, I will be dropping an anchor on this thread.
Cheers!
