I was on a sloop with a crewmate, doing the veil quest and had almost destroyed the final fort. Unfortunately, I had made some rather serious maneuvering blunders that ultimately caused our ship to sink. When we went back to finish it, we found a brigantine destroying the rest of the fort and getting the loot. The brigantine had sunk us once before when we were doing a previous part of the veil quest and we were didn't think we could take them head on. As they were sailing away, we said that they could get the reputation that came with completing the veil quest if they joined with us in an alliance (we didn't know if that was true, but at the moment, we saw no reason to tell them that and were rather desperate to get at least some of the gold for the loot). They joined with us in an alliance and we went to sell the loot. As it turned out, they were really nice and seemed sorry that they had sunk us before (presumably one of their crew decided to shoot first, ask questions later). After we got to the outpost, we realized that they had left the final veil stone back at the fort. They were kind enough to take us in their brigantine and we completed the quest. We parted on good terms, and everyone went away satisfied.
