Windows 10 and XBOX Series S with the same account?

  • Here's my question. My son plays on my XBOX Series S with my Microsoft/XBOX account. I would like to play with him, and would purchase the game on PC so I can do this via crossplay. Am I able to connect with him from PC to XBOX while using the same Microsoft account?

  • @sogholyheadshot If you wish to play together, you would need to have separate Microsoft Accounts/Gamertags.

There is a way to play together using family share (assuming you bought a Digital version of the game) but using the same Microsoft Account will not work.

  • @triheadedmonkey Thank you, I'm curious about something then. His progress is on my account so if I bought a copy he would have to switch to a family account on XBOX and start over? Would this be the same if I were to buy a Steam copy of the game? Could he then play on my MS/XBOX account, keep his progress and still play with me via crossplay? Sorry if that seems complicated, I have no desire to create a second MS account for this

  • @sogholyheadshot Your progress is linked to your xbox/windows account, not to the device/store where you got the game.

So it doesn't matter if you play on xbox, on pc with the windows version or on pc with the steam version, as long as you log in with the same account, you have the same progress/items/etc.
But log in with a new account, no matter on what device, you will need to start from the beginning on that account.

  • @super87ghost Sorry if this is repetitive, I'm just trying to walk this through in my head. So there's really no way to keep his progress unless I use a different Microsoft account to play? That's kind of a downer.

  • @sogholyheadshot His progress would be saved on the existing account. So either of you get to keep it and the other has to start over, or the other way around, depending on who gets to play on the original account (at least on the moments you play together).

  • @sogholyheadshot Progress is tied to individual Gamertags. Regardless of the platform, the new account would have to start from scratch (original GT progress would remain the same).

If the game was purchased on Steam (and logged into with the same Gamertag/Microsoft Account) progress would carry over between the two but no two people can be playing using the same Gamertag/Microsoft Account at the same time.

If you wish to play together, someone would need another Gamertag/Microsoft Account. (which are free to create).

If you own a Digital copy of Sea of Thieves, you should be able to share the GAME with other accounts that play on Xbox/PC (whichever way you wish to do it) that are part of your 'Home' but each person that is playing would require a separate MS Account/Gamertag if you wish to play together.

So, for example, if your son wanted to play on Xbox with you that was playing on PC, you and your son would need separate Gamertags/Accounts but not need to buy another copy of the game.

As far as I know Steam version doesn't work the same with game sharing but I'm not too familiar with Steam so please don't quote me! :D

You can share your game library (or part of it) on steam, but only 1 can play the game at a time and steam always prefers the owner of the game. So if the owner already plays, the 'friend' can't start the game. If the friend is already playing, the owner can start the game and the friend will see a warning that the game will close in 5 minutes i think it was, so that he/she can quickly finish what he/she was doing in the game before it closes.
