Why so many Solo player posts? - the symptoms.

  • I admittedly have only played this game a short time compared to many here, however I have noticed a trend . The trend is calls for solo playing over crewing. Without getting a longwinded discussion on society norms and things outside the games' control I would like to instead focus on what this game can do about players edged/forced into solo play. Now I know forced may be a bit much as you can always just select solo play, but this of course comes at a gameplay cost.

The issue I see coming up often is troll players making open crew an undesirable settings for many if not most pirates. The content from what I have seen is tailored at least in part with an eye on crew play (not solo) and a major advantage in having more hands on deck or off deck as the case may be in combat. So this begs the question why would anyone aside from added challenge want to play solo and this comes around again to players not acting as an enemy instead of an ally when they agree to join a crew. I know you can brig players, but is this enough? And before anyone asks, no this this NOT a call to ban players as I am certain Rare has that as an option at their disposal. So I guess my question again is what can be done to encourage the use of the open crew setting ? Maybe a shadow banning system that won't let a trolling player join a crew with non trolls for a time and instead be crew with others of their playstyle ? Maybe there is more explore from an in game perspective and I have a few ideas I would like if I may share:

    • The Pirate Lord/ Servant of Flame have special punishments for uncrew like behavior (system controlled). Now the thresholds for this uncrew like behavior would need to be adjusted periodically to keep abusers from gaming the system and this being the case I would see this one as difficult and costly.

    • Using blunders and firebombs on your own ship during a certain amount of time after joining and open crewed ship would be impossible (not throwable within a certain distance from your ship).

    • Trolling behavior as stated above (clue me in to other types please if I missed some, sincerely) enables the ability to tie the offending player to front of the bow (front) of the ship or the side or any of a number of chosen hangable or tie off areas .

    • Billboarded list controlled by the system that would keep silent track of trolling behavior (decided again by Rare) and after a threshold those players names are listed on the board and as such made known also to players and if on that list you can not without direct permission by crews to join their open crew.

Anymore ideas? Issues with my ideas? I am all ears.

  • The game attracts a lot of people that have a lot of expectations and rather than adapting as an individual they try to push or force conformity based on their preferences and expectations.

If you were to get to know people that succeeded/succeed in open crew you'll likely find a lot of similarities with how they approach things.

Patient, understanding, chill, focused, don't micro manage if they are in the lead, don't escalate from frustrations, puts in effort etc etc.

Willing to work with others but also willing to find a new crew if necessary without blaming others.

Open crew has never and will never be the best place to get things done efficiently, it can happen but it'll never be reliable for that. It's for people to look for compatibility within short term gameplay, it's not going to have high success rates but if an individual approaches it in a certain way it's alright.

  • Open Crew is the same as PuG (Pick Up Group) in other games and those games have the same issues with strangers.

The thing that makes SoT different is the lack of guilds. In all other online games I have played the guild was always the central social focus. "Pugging" was what you did if you were desperate or such a troll no guild would have you.

Rumor has it they are working on guilds. I sure hope so.

Guilds sound fun , but would they be a Council of sorts and would these guilds have leaders? Interested to see how the game illustrates guilds.

I'm hoping for in game and global guild chat, that alone would allow players to crew up with guildies.

Of course there are all kinds of other neat things they could do, but on the topic of solo I think this is the #1 easy fix.

Please just don't let it be Discord!

  • Because open crew is an abandoned clunky mess and using discord to find a crew takes forever.

So that makes solo playing superior or just a symptom of a mechanic that needs help ?

No solo is hard, *sniffle*, but the group finding is horrible.

Maybe a choice to exempt a player from joining you via open crew if you have marked them from a previous game mechanic added ?

  • I have never found issue with solo play other than a bit of burn out from solo. Beyond that the only reason i dont have a duo partner to play with is because everyone has their own play style, and its hard to find a good match to play with.

That said, open crew is absolutely the last place to find a duo partner... Or any kind of reliable crew for that matter, and it definitely needs something done about it.

  • Other folks in crew ruin my immersion so for tall tales, adventures or stuff like Umbra tatoo set i prefer to go solo. As well as i want pratice some gamplay elements.

If i want get stuff done, farm gold, fight bigger HG battles i run with my home country discord where i find crew in less than 10 min.

Thiiiiiiiiiiiiissssssssssssssssss.... I've lost count the number of times I've booted up the SoT client and sat in the LFC Discord just looking for pirates to play with. There have been multiple sessions when I couldn't find a crew in 30-60 minutes and just played a different game. And I'm not picky! I'm 75/75/75/75/50/28 so I post "LTJ brig/galley no HG no server hopping just want to play" and like, crickets...

That's why I hope guilds is more like Deep Rock Galactic's game finder. Let captains host their ship, and show pirates a list of ships to join, their size, their emissary, and voyages/world events/HG. That's all we need to make PUG better.

  • I don't mesh with the average player and my friends all quit long ago and have no interest in returning, so I stick to solo or alliance servers. I'm perfectly happy digging up treasure and catching pigs for hundreds of hours, there's enough stuff to cycle through that I don't get bored. I find the pvp pretty boring and just won't do it so that's another reason I solo. The only time I really have loot on board is if I'm doing merchant voyages, so I have no issue with just scuttling and starting over. Never bothering with HG since I'm getting close to being able to get the Spinal costume.
