Wholesome Pirate requesting feedback

  • A while ago, I experienced an attempt at a hostile takeover of my small discord server dedicated to Sea of Thieves. The leadership of a large gaming discord server tried to coerce me into turning over the ownership of the humble discord server I had built for Sea of Thieves exclusively. Their claim was based on the fact that I had been a high ranking member in their discord for years and since my small discord shared members with theirs, my discord was basically theirs. They still wanted me to lead the discord I had made however, but I could not be allowed to own it.

I declined their generous offer, and they banned me from their discord while threatening all their other members with bannings if they were to support me and my discord. They cited their rule about indiscriminate recruitments from their discord as their justification, but that was a lie. Several people from their leadership were active Pirates and were long term members in what was my private and mostly inactive discord server. But when I began working on a theme for my discord with proper channels, fancy titles and achievements, interest and activity in my discord server grew. Then, when my discord was nearing completion, it was suddenly an issue and they attempted to take control.

The hostile large discord server in question, only had one text-channel and only a couple of voice-channels for Sea of Thieves. Furthermore, there was nothing to indicate individual members affiliation with Sea of Thieves - no titles or roles. Their leadership had admittedly abandoned all support for SoT for years and their SoT division had dwindled into almost nothing. We were only a handful of active SoT players left supporting their discord which had lost all incentive for new Pirates to join. My constructive suggestions for growth and activity were declined for years by their leadership, but when they realised what I had made with my discord they claimed ownership of it. I even offered them an exact copy of my discord, but they refused my offer and only wanted to claim mine and rename it.

I've been advised that all this drama in reality is harassment and that it should be reported to both RARE and discord. I have full documentation to back up everything I've stated here.

After some sleuthing I discovered who the main protagonist was who caused this conflict. This main protagonist was exposed by our crew years ago for cheating his way to Seadog lvl 50 (Arena Master) by setting up a macro and afk-ing the Arena. He admitted his transgressions and stopped playing SoT for over a year. He defended his actions by claiming he didn't have the time for the grind. I probably shouldn't have given this person another chance, but he was in charge of the SoT division in the aforementioned hostile discord and had also been a member in my discord for years. As it turned out, he had been sharing everything I had made for my discord with the rest of the leadership of the hostile discord and had been agitating for a hostile takeover. Maybe he wanted revenge for being exposed as a cheater years ago. It's evident that this person is highly manipulative and it's honestly quite impressive how he apparently managed to spin a false narrative that portrayed himself as the victim after I called him out for his actions.

The consequences of this harassment have been quite detrimental for me and my tiny discord. Some friends showed their true worth while others just hid like cowards. Some so-called friends I've spent hundreds of hours with in SoT, outright betrayed my trust and loyalty. I've been sailing as mostly a Galleon Captain since launch and have always strived towards gathering wholesome crews for amazing adventures, but after this drama in particular I've been subjected to, I honestly struggle to find the motivation to sail again.

Meanwhile, people who are known cheaters and who actively try to destroy small SoT gaming communities and harass individual people are detrimental for the SoT community as a whole and must be stopped. I'm also quite sure that the attempt at a hostile takeover also is a violation of discord's ToS. I feel obliged to report this matter and some constructive feedback and guidance from the SoT community as a whole would be much appreciated, since I've never been in a situation quite like this before.

    With wholesome regards
    Chlo

  • What is a hostile takeover even? You own the server, and they can't change that, no?

In any case, that just sounds like dumb discord drama from people who apparently have nothing better to do. Just take the people you still like playing with and continue to play with them. Block anyone that is a pain in the bum on all platforms and move on. People behave weirdly often and it's out of your control, can only control who you hang out with.

  • How vile.

Yeah, this is really dumb. But it's more than just discord drama, at least for me. They tried to coerce me into turning over ownership by threatening me and whoever had joined my discord with bannings from their discord if I didn't. This is what really troubled me as they literally tried to use my friendships against me and thereby created a conflict between friends. One moment I'm planning a roadtrip in my old restored classic car with some of my SoT-friends to meet them in real life, and suddenly I'm banned and have lost half my friends whom I've known for years. At this point, I have more daggers in my back than the Pirate Lord himself. I thought I knew who I was sailing with, but some people are just jealous and highly manipulative behind their masks of deceit and can unfortunately disrupt any community with their influence. I do appreciate your suggestion to move on and I know that there are plenty of wholesome Pirates out there to crew up with. But I've somewhat lost the drive atm. I need to shake this off.

  • Sounds like discord drama and not something for these forums tbh. Take it up with them.

I think you're mistaken. This matter is a clear example of online harassment revolving around SoT with discord as a medium. I believe that the abuse of any third party software as a medium to coerce and otherwise harass SoT players is against RARE's ToS. Am I wrong? Otherwise, large discord servers can bully people around and coerce SoT players in order to dictate who they can and can't sail with, without consequences. No discord server leadership should be able to control or limit how much SoT players are able to support the game in any way. Furthermore, I know that serious so-called discord dramas aren't uncommon and that it might be a good idea for RARE to investigate how discord can be abused to manipulate the social spheres and support of their game.

I'll report this matter to discord and I'll report those SoT-players who supported such coercive actions to RARE as well. I will however still deeply appreciate any feedback from people who can share some insights I might be unaware of.

  • @chlodovicus you are wrong.

Unless it’s an official discord server ran by Rare themselves, then it’s entirely within that community’s hierarchy to decide who’s in and out. The drama that follows is also contained within. Just because they happen to play the game, it doesn’t mean Rare are responsible for the people acting immaturely within their own isolated server.

I get you’re annoyed you got booted out of a discord server but you’ve come here looking for sympathy to your cause and hope that Rare will step in and tell your, now ex, discord community they were wrong to get rid of you. That won’t happen, I’m sorry.

I’m also not trying to be mean, but just give you the reality of the situation.

Best advice, just move on and try and rebuild what you’ve lost. If you’ve made friends via that community, message them privately and see if you can keep those connections.

Maybe I was unclear. Your generalisation of how discord servers should operate is correct and I wholeheartedly agree with your statement. But that wasn't the point. It's the harassment from individual SoT-players with discord as a medium that is arguably in direct violation with RARE's Code of Conduct for SoT and should be brought to RARE's attention. Any actions against the hostile discord server can obviously only be performed by discord who has the authority to do so.

Your assumptions about my motives are however incorrect. I'm way past being annoyed over this matter. Now I'm just sad and regretful over the thousands of hours I've apparently wasted with people who turned out to be morally corrupt. I'm not really looking for sympathy either, although support is always welcome. I have no expectations or hopes that RARE with any authority can step in and address the hostile discord on my behalf. It's evident for basically everyone who knows the background of the story that the hostile discord was completely in the wrong anyway. There's no doubt. RARE can however act against individual players who violate the Code of Conduct / ToS with sufficient evidence, and after some considerable thought I have no issues reporting those involved. Especially if they've been caught cheating in the past. There's a need to weed out the bad actors from SoT, but the sly and manipulative ones usually avoid attention. I guess I'm personally seeking closure with an ounce of justice as well.

I appreciate your feedback although I believe it's based on skewed assumptions. You believe that this matter falls beyond the scope of the Code of Conduct and it's difficult to argue otherwise without the documentation that reveals a direct correlation with SoT. Your advice is great but it's not quite that simple yet, and it's also harder to find proper crewmates these days for unspoken reasons. Luckily, I still have a few wholesome crewmates left I still occasionally sail with.

Thank you, for your realistic view on the limits of RARE's Code of Conduct. It's an interesting question and you might be right.

  • Reason #3420598 not to use Discord.

Do these guys get some kind of credit depending on the number of members? My wife plays a different game and she is being pressured to join their Discord channel.

  • @chlodovicus this doesn't belong here. Sounds like a discord problem at most and really just a you problem.

  • Ahoy!
