With the banana sails, the prize was the golden bananas and the banana sails. I think that the prize in addition to the golden skull should be skull sails.

Of course, the coolest prize up for grabs is a recreation of the Gold Hoarder’s skull awarded to the first pirate to complete the Mystery. The skull’s accompanying gold keys are designed to be shared with crewmates who joined the winner for every step of the journey.
Those who solve The Hoarder’s Hunt hot on the heels of the first crew to complete the challenge will also receive real-world prizes, with 10 runners-up receiving exclusive silver keys and 100 third-place pirates getting their hands on Reaper’s Mark medallions. With such glittering prizes on offer, we’re hoping you’ll feel compelled to tackle the clues that ‘H’ will be leaving behind.
For players who don’t quite qualify for the physical prizes, there are still in-game Titles, Trinkets and gold rewards to collect – plus, for the duration of the Mystery, washed-up Bullion Crowns will appear across the world. Players stumbling across these can hand them in to the Gold Hoarders for a handsome payoff so even if you’re not directly tackling the treasure hunt, you can still benefit from it as you travel across the map!

From what i have heard, the mods dont get paid, they are doing the best they can considering this is in their free time, so please at least respect them for taking the time to do what they do. Moderating anything where people can have a back and forth is no easy task.
@boeing7876500 there was also a whole banana outfit. Not just sails. And i don’t think most players want even more cosmetics designed that only a few people can even get in the end. It’s fine as is.

O.o So a multimillion dollar/pound company won't pay them even a part time salary or similar? Do they get in game rewards at least? Like a stash of ancient coins, PE cosmetics etc? If not, why would anyone wanna do it for free? I'm honestly just curious.

Just a different type of forum user, someone who helps keep stuff in order so the devs can work on their game and not so much on the forum.
Not everything needs to be driven by a prize. If they were, we’d have a load of awful mods who joined only for the benefits.
They do get sails I think, though.
@klutchxking518 An employee would always act according to company guidelines as it's their job to keep vs power of love. I am not commenting on their work ethic here, just saying. Also Microsoft-Rare is not some Indie developer running things from a basement. I guess they are lucky they have volunteers that take it as serious as Employees who make a living out of love for the game.
Besides, not saying they should get thousands per month, but if their job is important and they do it well, monetary compensation would be in order. Electricity, computer parts, food costs money, so actually it's like they are paying to do this job ^^

So you are in it to flaunt? That is not why people should want cosmetics in this game, you should want cosmetics because they look nice, not because its exclusive to you. But as it stands even to flaunt, i would think that having an actual gold trophy would be cooler, and if you didnt care for it, you could get a lot of actual money value out of it, but you still prefer pixels to flaunt instead?

Im pretty sure it is real gold considering they gave out 4 solid gold bananas in the past, and they said its a gold skull and keys.
