The map

  • I thought about this one a few times, weighed the pros and cons, and I think it'd be fun.

Have the map on the map table, but don't show ANY ships. Not the players, nor reapers, nor any. Show the reapers chest, but no ships. Make the map same as a real map. You get your location when close to islands because of the banner that says the island name on screen. Use that, with your compass to determine where you are, and need to go. The map just gives an overhead of the world, so you see islands and distance. But again, no longer shows ships.

On sailing ships (and even near modern ships), travel was done via dead reckoning. You had a course, you had a speed, and you had a timer. Your map would be on a table, and you would mark out your heading, calculate distance traveled, and plot it on the map. In the navy there's 1 or two people who STILL do this constantly as back-up if gps or computers go down. (it was obviously better when maps were to scale). This is simulated in the game by at least showing our position on the map, because even during the age of piracy, they would have done this.

  • @tybald this is true, they did mark their maps for location, heading and trajectory. But they never could look at a map and watch their ship sail across the water on the map. They had to rely on the stars, the current to figure out their location. It'd be cool if they did similar in the game. It would make navigation more of a challenge. Especially if no ships showed on the map.

Then you couldn't look at, say sanctuary outpost, through your spyglass and then go to the map to see your location to determine the distance. It'd all be based on eyesight.

  • @restlessboredom tracking other ships is the only useful aspect for the map. After a certain level of experience you don't need it anymore as a map.

This idea is a hard pass from me.

  • @restlessboredom why? If you think this is what is allowing players to hunt you, you're wrong. Ships stand out massively on horizon so it's not difficult

  • @restlessboredom honestly I haven’t used the map in years once you’ve learned where the islands are no need to even look at it and reapers pop in n out of the map so often iv given up keep track of them

  • This would mean reapers need a total rework to still be the hunter faction that its intended as.

Right now i dont need the map for anything other than to see where small islands i still have to memorize are, and to see where reapers are. I got a group of friends who jokes about me being some kind of sweat just because i dont ever look at the map to find islands.

  • Even with a map people have hard time sailing. Do you really want to make it 10x worse for them?

  • People constantly use the line "it's a pirates game, we play like pirates" and similar such lines. I can guarantee you no pirates had GPS back then. Which is essentially what the map is. Has nothing to do with people hunting others, that was simply an example.

My point was make it like they had to deal with. Utilize your surroundings and resources to know your location, not a GPS location
