For those who are unaware, the disgraced hats are three hats, belonging to one of the three old main factions (Merchant Alliance, Gold Hoarder, Orders of Souls). Each can be unlocked by handing in five plundered lvl. 5 flag, of the corresponding faction, to the reapers as a reaper emissary yourself.
Why do I bring this up? Well, getting those achievements for unlocking the flags can be really exhausting. It's very luck reliant to find the emissary of the needed faction in the first place and not always as easy to get their flag. Of course, the other crew got it to lvl. 5 and they aren't really keen on loosing what they got through their hard work. Very often in such a fight it can also mean that if you let the other crew escape it can be an instant loss because they can just sell their flag immediately when coming to an outpost. You may say now: "Then just don't let them escape" but that is easier said than down. Particularly if your opponent has a higher knowledge of the game or even one on par with you it is very likely for them to find some way to do it.
As Sea of Thieves over the years got less grind I kinda wish the same could happen with this challenge. Especially since the rest of the emissary sets are now releasing under the requirement of ranking up the corresponding faction, I wish the disgraced hat challenges could be changed, to not only fit the rest of their sat, but also so you can unlock those fresh looking head decorations with a lot less luck and frustration.
The disgraced hats
I don't like those types of commendations because of how luck based they are for people that play organically
5 is a pretty reasonable requirement though, especially now that 5 athenas are more common than the rest these days.
I strictly play organically and it took me foreevvveerr to organically get the 5 flags for athena and even order
with a 5 requirement it's tough for me to get too enthusiastic about changing it. It's a grind and I'm not a fan of the design but it is doable. Anything more than 5 and I'd probably be more against it.
Even if someone isn't strong at pvp or finding ships on the server they can still check around outposts/sovereigns to see if someone forgot to lower one before they bounced
If people aren't strict about how they obtain things they can try to cheese it if they are struggling to find them. Find other crews to be peaceful with and swap flags, ask for the flag in exchange for something in game, that sort of thing. Nothing wrong with wheelin' and dealin' if you're into it.

Have had this thought a long time. Been close since emissary launch. Its way too situational too.
It should be 1 grade 5 flag instead anyway.
Can you sell your own for progress?
It's a reaper challenge. You don't get credit for selling your own. Like the HG enthusiasts like preaching, it's a long term goal or you're going to need to adopt full Reaper and go hunting. It's a fairly reasonable goal. I'm not pvp inclined and have 3 (2 Reaper and one Merch) that I didn't have to fight anyone for.

.... I tend to not turn in my emmi flags when I'm done.
Nice. Love your work. I tend to do the same.
If I'm looking for particular world events, I'll put up a flag and scuttle hop, leaving the flag behind each time, until I find what I'm after. I once found lvl 5 Merchie at the outpost when I spawned in, but had to work for the rest. Still looking for g5 OoS.While I am not personally a fan of server hopping, getting these hats are perfect for server hoppers hunting for lvl5s. Perhaps it was made with the intent to support those who enjoy server hopping.
Turning in 5 is not that big of a grind IMO. Ironically, I think these are some of the best-looking hats too. I might make that my next goal. i need a new goal anyway.
I love these hats. I sail with my merchant hat proudly. It adds to the narrative that my pirate killed a merchant. And likes to wear his hat.
Personally I want another commendation for servants of flame, so if we get more - we eventually get disgraced hats for our skeleton versions.
My advice: server hop for emissaries. Then hunt the one you want on the server. Use a rowboat and a keg. And follow them until they hit level 5. It’s super doable, honestly.
Just takes some dedication.
My only complaint is that I have to get that to complete my expensive gold hoarder outfit. :)
@lackbarwastaken I personally think that if hard does equate to lucky, then yes. It's the same reason why I'm not a fan of the Shrouded Ghost Achievement. Killing the big boy is not the problem, it's getting the chance of encountering it. So it doesn't matter how much effort I put in it, I must get lucky to encounter the Shrouded Ghost or in my case the required emissary. But your opinion is also justified, there are not that many difficult to achieve cosmetics in this game.
@lord-lonlon Just hunt during the first month of new ledger rewards, its usually the easiest time to find emissaries. These commendations dont require changing.
@lord-lonlon personally I'm fine with some "that guy just got lucky" title. The shrouded ghost of course is just as easy as any other meg to defeat. I think a mythical white whale that everyone is looking for is a great addition to the game even if it doesn't exist and anyone who has the title is related to a Rare employee at least and you can't convince me otherwise.
There are many aspects that make this foul.
Take shiny hunting in pokemon for example. Chances for shiny are 1 to a few thousands usualy, however most people can get it by reseting before 2-3 days have gone by, if you have the time. Its likely going to take more time to find 5 emissary g5 flags. This across 3 commendations aswell.Although this is luck and effort, its not too impressive. Remeber what audience that wants to use these items. I assume voyagers and such. To do something else can be good but this is so out of line. Even if some enjoy the flex of this, there is an audience to remeber.
This will differ alot aswell. Some got these items in a challange from time ago. Other completed the commendation while the emissary system was new and everyone was grinding expanded faction rep.
@wujuwarrior1375 i will not even consider pokemon for a moment no. Cosmetics being exclusive is fine its literally the only thing that gives them meaning.
its ok to try and get something and not get it. Lessons for life.
i disagree. i will keep my virginity intact if that is what it means to get every single item in the game.
