At the turn of every season, I log on in hopes that they will add something more Wokou or Wokou-esque. I, for many years, have been met with disappointment again and again. I always check the Plunder Pass, the Pirate Emporium and am constantly met with sadness. I see they added yet another Plague Doctor outfit (albeit the alacarte purchase is a step in the right direction - I've always felt all the outfits should be this way for the most part - good on them for that I hope they add that idea to other outfits in the future). Anyway, I have been told in discussions "it's a Caribbean pirate game" or "don't know why Japanese people would be here," etc, etc. Well, my rebuttal to that is, ok what are gladiators doing here? What are plague doctors doing here? What are vikings doing here? And I'm not saying they can't, I am saying inclusivity would be great across the board. I would even pay money for these aesthetics. It's a fantasy game and for the love of all things gaming - please, I am begging you (RARE) to add Japanese aesthetics. Katana, kasa (bamboo hat), yukata, anything, I am genuinely disappointed by this. I have put a good bit of hours into the creative crew and have spent many years playing this game - rather consistently. I'm not looking for an argument - just trying to gain some awareness. Thanks for reading.
No Japanese aesthetic, why?
@doga-maelstrom The plague doctors are part of history and are from that period.
I didn't know we had gladiators so I can't speak to that.
I can see adding items, not ships or buildings, from any culture from that period, ship crews have always been and still are one of the most diverse working groups in the world.
Rare need to be really careful with appropriation and getting the style correct. Mind they added a hairstyle a while back and it got pulled because it was insulting to some members of the Asian community? This is what they’ll be considering before doing something like that again.
Don’t get me wrong I want to see this stuff in game, but as long as it’s done respectfully.

They didn't run into appropriation issues, lots of people play the game with all sorts of backgrounds so it's just serving the community
the only issues they ran into were a couple of specific things that were offensive to some members providing some feedback so they took a couple of things out.
I was thinking of that with, I wanna say season 8 or 7 plunder pass, had the cherry blossoms going for it? Koi pond capstan?
In the Art of the Sea of Thieves book, there are some concept designs for the Sea of Five Winds.
My friends and I have always been eager to see aspects of that come into the game.
I remember the first time we encountered an Ashen lord, and it was Warden Chi! We were so excited and were wondering what more was to possibly come. Would we see some corner of the map become the Sea of Five Winds?I do hope, some day, more may come from that.
Even without the fantasy of the Sea of Thieves, East Asian pirates are very well fitting within a pirate game. Often referred to as the most successful pirate in history - Ching Shih, while not Japanese, was a Chinese woman.
It'd be great to see more options befitting the styles of that region.
This is some of my favorite unused concept art in the book. I would love to see Rare include more Japanese and Chinese flair into the Sea of Thieves, as there were pirates from those empires as well.
I am 100% for this, as cultural representation in gaming is a wonderful way for less exposed persons to experience the beauty of various aesthetics. It can even be a gateway to finding they love that cultural style.
@tesiccl it was removed because the description referenced a person who self declared wanted to, in quote, enslave the “yellow people”. The beard is the same one Sudds uses but with a mustache attached. Still feel like whoever thought referencing that person was a good idea was way off their rockers, but i don’t see why they couldn’t have just changed the description instead of removing a cosmetic that’s still in the game in emporium art and on an NPC.
Well, first of all there is is some cosmetic which is close to Japanese style, like Flame heart clothes set, ship set, weapon set. Also, in Pirate Emporium there is cosmetic and weapon and ship set in that style too.
Secondly, in Pirate's Of Carribean:At World's End, there was Singapore with famous captain Sao Feng. So such style is acceptable.
And lastly, don't worry mate, the time will come, and more cosmetics with such styles will definitely come to Sea of Thieves, maybe.@clumsy-george said in No Japanese aesthetic, why?:
Just a quick question , and no not to stir up a fight , but are there famous Japanese Pirates from around the Golden Age of Piracy ? They don't need to be involved in the Carrebean area , i just ask if there were Japanese Famous Pirates around that timeframe?
It's likely to be a little hard to find. The golden age of piracy was very Euro-centric, as they were the major players. It's not implausible that there were asian pirates in the Caribbean, but they would likely have been deck-hands rather than captains. Any infamy they had would likely have been due to novelty. But they likely wouldn't have been very famous, as again, they were deck hands and not European.
Im fine with a rough aesthetic, but i think katanas would be a bit too direct and out of place, but considering singapore and china had a major part to play in the pirate era i could see a south east and eastern asia style coming to the game in some measure.
And might i add, if they ever add different sail types i just want battened junk sails on my sloop so much! Please rare! My dream of battened sails will never die!

I think appropriation is not too much of a worry in this game since they have established that real world countries dont even exist in the sot world, so they can be more creative with the style choice since japan functionally doesnt exist in their world.

Yea, they had to rescind some stuff with the Lunar New Year set because some pirates found it offensive... It may be best to just stick to the western world.

I disagree with that
we live and learn and try again with experience from previous attempts
they tried, they received feedback on a couple of things, they took a couple things out
nothing wrong with that, that's just how it goes in a community
just try again at some point

As far as i understand it, that was the common case of people getting offended on behalf of others over something simple, which i dont get behind.
I have had people get offended on my behalf when i wasnt even offended, and i flat out had to tell them off because of it. A shocking number of people make a mountain out of some one elses mole hill.

There was more to it than that, it was an unintentional situation where something added had a history of being used negatively against people. The feedback was not just people being offended on other's behalf it was feedback specifically from people that saw it as inappropriate.
Not everyone agrees on everything but there was substantive feedback involved in the decision to remove it

I dont disagree that it was a drama point and is best left out, thats part of why i vouch for not putting real world things into the game, because sadly people make drama out of it. I just have an inherent distain for that specific situation due to my own experience of people being offended on my behalf.
I do agree its best they removed it still, just was a bit of a vent about part of that situation.
@foambreaker I respectfully disagree with you, plague doctors are a 1500s thing and at most 1600s. The "Golden Age" of piracy as they call it was about 1637 to 1697 (yes, there were pirates still in existence and there still are, some were hired during the American Revolution - but they are all lost to the sands of time or were executed). There are more years with Pittsburgh Pirates baseball team than there are actual Golden Years of Pirates, pirates. And I'm not hating on anyone if the plague doctor or viking or gladiator is their thing. Good on you, it's your game, your character; have fun, enjoy it and enjoy your gameplay - most sincerely. I am just confused on why there isn't any Japanese aesthetics or close to it. Yes, the Ashen stuff is close... but they manage to add a khopesh and a spatula... like what the heck to the spatula sword. My confusing frustration is not directed at you or anyone - so I apologize.
@electricknights
Ching Shih is one of the most successful and notorious and amazing of pirates. She led like a corporation. Commanded a fleet of 20,000 ships (they consisted of Japanese and Korea peoples too). The Wokou, or Japanese Pirates, were so mighty they took on the Spanish. Many samurai, who didn't commit sepuku or ritual suicide and even Yakuza, became Wokou. The Wokou commanded the Seas for 300 years. The only thing, really at this point, I want is maybe the Ashen / Jade cosmetics in an array of colors, bamboo hat (kasa) and a GD katana. Mainly the katana at this point. Beggers can't be choosers. I don't mind the Ashen / Jade boots but I end up wearing the base wooden sandals. They're closest I think and also, I think some of the Ashen / Jade cosmetics are glitched. They appear to behave unnaturally in some of the poses / emotes...@goldsmen
Not trying to be argumentative, they have 2 khopesh which is Bronze Era and Gladius swords... they have a spatula in the current plunder pass - which is meh in my opinion. A fishbone sword, also, meh...Although, I agree on the sails thing. That's why I pick the dark red sails all the time, to give my ships that Eastern, pseudo, junk ship look.

For me a katana is out of place just because its the most trope riddled sword in the world and taken way too serious. There are plenty of other swords from eastern asia and even japan that could be considered, but anything too tropey and oversaturating media feels out of place to me.
In a game with such a wide array of weapons they call Cutlass, but which clearly are not, I say bring on the Katana. It's just one more sword in a collection of misfits. No one is making anyone use a sword they don't want to use.
We already have Cutlass, Rapier, Falcata, Khopesh, Scimitar, Sabers or Calvary Blades, a Spatula....lol.....some fancy side swords, a sickle, some Falchions, A Dao variant and a Gladius. Seems a Katana is over due.
The Relic of Darkness Cutlass is all katana to me. Other variants would be fun.
@doga-maelstrom well said! I like your ideas, your history references, and I'm all for the katana. My dream is for them to add a lot of Viking stuff. I'm confident with time they will.
It is a fantasy game, add more fantasy choices.
@ulfrs
I think it would be really rad if they added a Plunder Pass based around the 5 Winds (I think that's what it's called) and have, in general East Asian Aesthetics in it - particularly based around Wokou. Have a kasa (bamboo hat), a katana as some of the loot weapons and items, but also add a boat oar carved down to look like boken - like what Musashi Miyamoto did in his final duel. It is true, in a fantasy game the possibilities are endless. My goodness, I don't like saying this, I would even pay money for the aesthetic in which I desire.
I am mighty appreciative of all the support and in regards to the Viking look, in the in game store (found at any outpost) there are Viking looking attire for sale with doubloons (sp?). Pair that with the gladiator gladius (pirate emporium), the shores of gold star tattoo and you have a pseudo accurate viking.@doga-maelstrom little of topic but... you have the samurai outfit, with the chinese Raiden's stile hat and a lightsaber or am i seeing bad? btw in my opinion they should add more stuff les like the latest premium sets from the pass, like the set of woods or whatever it was called, andt he jellyfish in my opinion they are just not, i'd love something a little bit more serious (i need the skull of the kraken figurehead from the accomendation of the cursed balls damn). so, i hope that you don't want something like tokidoki or uwu style because that should be stupid as hell. even if in the store something asian style exists. like the chinese first of the year bull set (IDK the real name), the one with the cherry's tree flowers set with the baobab in the anchor and all the aschen set recolor, like the west winds
@fedted998
My Gamerpic is myself in a samurai do, I made myself. The kasa (bamboo hat) is a buddhist wanderers hat from Japan and I am holding a katana. The sun is behind me, with it setting it gave an appearance of shimmering. In all fairness, "Raiden" (aka Raijin) is from Japanese folklore and it is theorized that he helped drive off the Mongolian invasion with a vicious storm. When the Mongolian were invading Japan they were met by a terrible storm that really impeded their progress and destroyed a large piece of their navy. Please, may I ask, do not call it a Raiden hat.No, I don't want silly, uwu, style anything. In my sentiments, I want respect being made to the culture in which it comes from. This isn't about a love for anime or anything like it. In fact, when people talk like anime characters it is viewed as rude or insulting. People in Japan do not talk or behave like this.
