Can a Guardian spawn on another Guardian?

  • I took a slight break from sot so I'm not too familiar with some of the new stuff. I was a Guardian of Fortune doing the last stage of the veil quest where you take out the center fort. But another Guardian of Fortune spawned on me. Were they there to help because we are the same faction, or were they there because there was no Servants to match them against? Side note: I may have panic and shot at them first because I was pinned between them and the veil fort and didn't know what was going on.

  • Also it seems a bit unfair for one side to just spawn in fresh and ready to fight and the other just barely keeping there boat afloat from the absolute bombardment they are currently receiving from the veil fort. Can an opponent just spawn at any time whether you're off the boat on the far side of old faithful or in the middle of a sea quest like the veil or is it strictly just when you're sailing on open water?

  • @jackattack064 yes they have same faction fights, it was brought in about halfway through season 8. It was to mitigate queue times and help players find a match for their skill level.

If you’re gonna put down the hourglass, always leave ready and equipped for a potential fight.

  • But again, it doesn't seem fair if you are in the middle of something else. What would be the point of taking the defensive side if you can be caught in a battle while doing something else. Like say in the middle of a riddle on the opposite side of old faithful. It is a very discouraging role to take. It makes sense if you're on the open sea sailing. They spawn in, you're both on your boat, there are no distractions, just you and them, fight. Is the sole purpose of the hour glass simply to just constantly take the offensive then rush to the nearest outpost when done. Because that seems to be the most encouraged route. All I'm wonder is are there specific parameters that would prevent a battle. Like said being stopped at an island (Why not provide the players on the island a 5 sec early warning first like "Make haste to your ship, an enemy approaches!" so they have time to rush back to their ship and are not just some sitting ducks), and is there a specific reason to take the defensive side over the offensive side.

  • @jackattack064 you voted thr hourglass. you decided you wanted to defend. Why should the game decide you are too busy to be attacked?

  • I'm just asking what are the benefits to being defensive over offensive and if there are safe times where you can't be attacked; like a fight cooldown or off ship spawn protection. Because it seems that the offensive is the safer approach, never being caught off guard. I'm not asking for a game change I'm just trying to rap my head around this new (to me) feature. I felt that the one sidedness toward offensive meant that there was some bonus to being defensive that I'm not seeing. If not, then fine. Next time I'll just chose the side with the greater strategic advantage when using the hour glass and grind quests without the hour glass.

  • @jackattack064 "But again, it doesn't seem fair if you are in the middle of something else."

It's the choice you made when you decided to use the hourglass but not dive, that is "defending" and you are still going to get fights.

There is a loot bonus, however you have to win otherwise of course, you don't have any loot.

If you don't think defending is worth it then dive, or don't use the glass. You get to chose what works for you.

  • @Foambreaker Thank you, that was what I wanted to know. I was probably not asking the best questions but I had no idea what the answer was.

  • The trade offs are you get to pick your battlefield, can load up on kegs and traps, but dont know when youll be invaded.

  • @JackAttack064 makes a very good point that defense is useless. It shouldn't be. Having more players defensive will result in more matches available to those diving.

Defense needs a rework to be more attractive to those that prefer to sail organically. It needs to give a predictive invasion time so you know between battles when you're open to invasion, only ever match you with players in your ELO bracket and award the treasury grade even to a loss. Right now, there is no reason what so ever to opt in for defensive. I would love to play that way but it's completely irrelevant, I'll just dive instead.
