I am a hair away from not playing hour glass anymore. It's unfair, I am able to do open world PVP fine but and hold my ground but this is another form of torture. I have tired everything watching Tips and tricks video, practicing outside of the Hourglass mode. I try my hardest and still I am not able to keep up. I have gone to the discord and looked for other crews to join. BUT when 95% of the people are putting 500hr | Level 120 | "must be good" . It really puts me off and when I do find a Crewmate we encounter the same problem, Getting shot threw the deck which I did not know you could do! we get out played in almost everyway. I spent 11hrs only to go from 24-27, I have been playing for 5 days straight only to get to 27. I have not been able to go past a 1 streak. Please add something like turning in 150 Athenas Chest or 150 Ashen wind Skulls to be able to obtain these curses. 1/15 fights I am able to win.
PVP Curses Need an Alternate way to be gained
They don't need an alternate way to be earned. That kind of defeats the purpose for their existence - to get players to repeatedly play hourglass so that there is a constant stream of players in the pool to match against.
They could do more to entice players to continue with it, such as more frequent rewards (cosmetics, gold, rep, etc..) which would probably go a long way to keeping player interest up.
Rather than make it priority try turning it into a multitask scenario long term
a couple dives a day, whatever it may be just have it be a part of the whole rather than the entire focus
Once you break the habit of it being a priority you will either eventually reach it peacefully or get to a point where you no longer feel you need to do something you don't enjoy
The quality of your experience will increase when it's not the only part of your approach to the game/sailing/piracy
You'll do awesome with just simple yet effective changes to the approach, it's not often enjoyable while a habit is being changed around but it'll pay off in a couple of weeks.

Hg gives rep even when losing so think of it like hunter's call
hunter's call is a long grind and is unpleasant to just sit and fish all day for a lot of people
so many just turn in a fish here and a fish there over months and months of time
you always win something with a dive, a bit of rep. If it takes you a year or two years that's alright because the victory is getting at it every day.
If you try every day and get a little something in return you are seizing the day, that's the best you can ever do and it will get you where you are looking to go or it'll get you somewhere you didn't plan on going but turned out to be the right place for you.

If they changed it so this could be earned through other means, then people will demand that most every curse or hard to get item be earned through other easier means. Some items are just intended to be rewards for specific challenges which isnt a bad thing. You arnt supposed to to get every cosmetic in this game, and if you try to, its not supposed to be easy.

For comfort though, I can share some "think-tank" knowledge on the HG-grind to perhaps clarify it a bit:Now, assuming that you really want the curses and the following cosmetics ...
yeah ... then there is no avoiding the PvP. Because it does not end at lvl-100 ... all that gives you is the BASE-curses! lvl-100 is where it REALLY begins!It even goes as far as to force you to wear these curses if what you want is to progress with them, thus baring you from using what you'd actually like ...
(Not necessarily something I personally judge as Rare's best game design-decision but whatever [UNLESS ofc you LIKE the curses :D])BUT there is another scenario!
Say you just want to get into the second lairs for the immersion of it, WELL, reaching LvL-100 (2x for both mind you ...) is still ... a huge amount of grind ...
And it is not just any grind ... it is PvP-Grind! That is what makes it the crown-jewel of gaming indeed IF you like PvP ...NOW: Is it too much to ask to make reaching lvl 100 easier?

Well ... I guess yes. Rare designed it so that lvl 100 is still ... more or less achievable even if you don't really like PvP.But mark my words:
ANYTHING after lvl-100 ...
THAT is where the true grind begins!
And THAT is where NOONE should "force" himself to do it just because he likes THAT particular cosmetic you get at lvl-160 ...
Even getting the Gold-Curse was 10x easier than that because of the keyword PvP.

You can more or less fathomably force yourself to grind to lvl-100, even 2x.
I would not be surprised if they make it easier though. So maybe wait ... until ~ season 11 (with some luck it might even happen next season).What they most likely WON'T make easier though is to get anything that comes after lvl-100.

@hexyuko If you are on Xbox you need to turn off cross server. There is zero balance between Xbox controller and PC Mouse.

This can help depending on stamps and time played and such but xbox players are pretty darn skilled and many keep up well with pc players these days so go into knowing it might help but there will still be a lot of very skilled opponents around.
Xbox servers are not better than play against PC right now.
If you play on PC, you will face cheaters, if you play on Xbox Only, you will face CronusZen players with aim assist , auto doublegun animation cancelling, auto sprint, support to MK on xbox only servers....
There is not a good way to play PvP atm, you will be on a huge disadvantage on both fields. Just check people you face on HG, tons of smurfs with 8 days played using this kind of devices/cheats farming people just for making fun of them.

This entire post reeks of a conspiracy theory.
You are going to need some solid proof that people on Xbox servers are cheating in ways that you don't believe is possible, because wow, you are r e a c h i n g for a point to make.
We all have it rough, we got slaughtered by a crew many would accuse of cheating earlier but it was on Xbox servers so we can’t take that route they were just ridiculously good.
Additional ways to earn the curses defeats the purpose of the curse. The alternative would be to add new curses requiring something other than allegiance.
Rare has stated that PvE will be getting some attention soon, we just have to wait and see what they bring.

Rare is well aware of the current issues and all the numbers behind it. I'm pretty sure they make changes soon that will make the mode more fun and bring more people to it. They did big changes back in arena days and in the end it was awesome. Just wait for a bit if you don't enjoy HG and focus on other stuff meanwhile.
@hexyuko I think that best way to make it better expirience is add "first win of the day" mechanic that grants one whole level.
No to earning it via pve.
However I have seen a lot of good suggestions on how to improve it.
To name a few:
First win of the day as mentioned above.
@sweetsandman made a great suggestion about weekly and seasonal quests attached to HG, which would grant extra alligiance.
For example kill an enemy player once, hit enemy ship with certain amount of cannonballs, set enemy boat on fire.
I think these would make it more friendly towards more casual playerbase and increase engagement with HG.I would also like to throw my own idea to the mix to add an extra "battlepass" to both factions each season to further incetivise people taking part in hourglass, so engagement would not stop after you get the curse and you would still have an extra reason to return. Or simply to get additional cosmetics while you work towards the curse or whichever goal you have in mind.

Xp has been increased as it is. At the time I was getting the curse the xp received was half that. You can just watch Blurbs on Twitch and learn how to stomp everyone in 2 weeks. @hexyuko 100% right. I am close to leaving this game. I was a day one player. I like pvp. I hate dive.
Rare put the most requested curse in a niche pvp mode. A arena pvp mode at that. Had the skeleton even been locked behind world pvp it would have been better. Ghost behind pve. But no, behind a terrible boring arena pvp.
It takes to long to start. It takes too long to restart if you sink. Issues with hit reg. etc.
Would anyone do it if there was no curses? I for sure wouldn’t.

IMO the curses look lame and make everyone look like clones.
Can't wait until half of the players looks like the same.@hexyuko Stop playing hourglass and pick it up on the next boosted weekend. I got 50 levels in 7 hours during the last community day and got my Reaper's curse.
Stop torturing yourself, play the way you like, and when the next community day/gold and glory weekend rolls around turn on netflix, plug in to spotify, and let the good times roll. Hourglass was a lot more fun for me during those weekends because 1) losing was rewarding and not demeaning, 2) a lot more pirates participate during those days so you're more likely to get close matches, and 3) you actually make recognizable progress.

We're already there, why do you think you're facing this situation? Pirates like me, the average-to-above-average, took two months to get both curses. A long grind, but not an absurd one. It took me little more than a season to get the rewards introduced that season. Seems about right. And to what Lormiun said, all I did was get the base cosmetics! I now have commendations to chase to boot. But the commendations generally aren't earned in hourglass so we're not queueing any more.
The pirates queueing right now are the ones that LOVE the PVP in this game, the experts, and pirates that don't have the curses yet. Sorry matie, the odds of you meeting a PVP expert are higher than the odds of you getting an equally skilled fight. 🤷♂️
@hexyuko it was meant to be exclusive, so its natural the majority of players won't ever get their hands on it. You'll get it once you're ready
