Port Merrick

  • This is more like a question, but in a way this could be classified as feedback.

Port Merrick's construction has now 'finished'. Will there be more to it?

I would assume yes. For many different reasons. Like the dry dock that could potentially allow us to change ship size mid session? To the vast open spaces filled with nothing at the moment. What does the future hold?

    The back story:

The whole community was involved and divided into two groups: Reapers trying to destroy Golden Sands vs Merricks side trying to protect it. In a way this was the beginning for Guardians v Servants. Merrick got killed, but Golden Sands was saved, then they hired a bunch of invisible Oompa Loompas, an whola - Port Merrick!

So apart from Lore, will there be a reason why we have a Port instead of an Outpost? Will there be more to this brand new location apart from having +-50% less FPS on a massive empty outpost? Golden sounds took long time to get around to gather supplies, now it takes even longer, but I surely hope there will be a good reason for it.

'You may say I'm a dreamer. But I'm not the only one''

So I am really hoping something really worth the wait and the resources spent by developers will come to life there. What do ye think?

What do you think Rare will surprises us with? Grog's on me, share ye'r thoughts hearties!

This post was insipired by Captain Falcore video, which gave me the urge to post this.

If I recall correctly, the Pirate Lord had reservations for this outpost once it had been saved. Since the Reapers' attack on Golden Sands, all of the other outposts "supposedly" are even more on their guard from any special attacks from them. This outpost had cannons installed incase the Reapers planned to attack this location once more, giving the port additional defenses from a nasty attack unlike previously.

Additionally, it's said that the Reaper's Bones had an interest in Golden Sands because there was something they were looking to use for their own endeavors, and following the loss, Merrick/the construction team have supposedly found that "something", what it is, is unknown at the current moment, but it might be used at some point per the developer's intention to insert it into the game's world in due time.

Nothing else besides that has really been promised under what would become of New Golden Sands, and even then, nothing was really set in stone, we just gotta enjoy our decreased FPS outpost for what it is.

  • @nex-stargaze I hope you are wrong mate. I know nothing was promised, but everything we have today in the Sea of Thieves was never promised apart from PVEVP adventure. So I am truly hoping that Rare have something up their sleeves to surprise us.

From Lore perspective, they could have just installed some towers with cannons on the old golden sands to 'protect it' . From 'realistic' point of view. How does one destroy small sand islands, disregarding the wooden plank bridges that would take like a day to rebuild ^^. Building a whole port town just for the heck of it would seem like wasted time.

So let me rephrase this, what would you wish it became in your wildest Sea of Thieves dreams? ^^

  • The merchant dock is sadly limited, I was envisioning long wharfs where multiple ships could dock.

The guns are insufficient as well, there are for example not near enough guns protecting the Sovereigns dock, as a result there are gaps in the fields of fire. The other day I wanted to defend against a skeleton ship and it was futile.

Also, the name is just wrong, Fort Foambreaker would have been a better choice :)

Something like that would be neat, yes.
I quite like the merchant area, but I wish it weren't so messy. You'd think a company more or less dedicated to counting stuff would keep a tidier outfit.

TBH that sounds like the name of a pub...

  • Make sure to check out Merrick's memorial statue for 5dubs lol. I like the looks of it. Worst Sovereign tower design ever tho. I don't like turning in there anymore lol.

    Sure!

Drinking grog raises yer emissary level at Fort Foambreaker!
Chests of a thousand grogs pay 5x at Fort Foambreaker.
Cases of empty bottles pay 10x and you can turn them in no matter where they were supposed to go!

*stolen bottles, really, I had no idea!!*

    I want this mechanic!

  • One thing that strikes me about Port Merrick is unless you are on a captaincy ship it appears to be more difficult to sell there(Gold Hoarders, OOS and Athena Selling points are further away from most docking points)

With this being the first port town can we assume it is more prosperous and they might start paying us more money to sell there?

  • I just hope they fix the lag there. I have rtx 2070 and ryzen 7 3700x and my frames drop to as low as 40 there on highest graphics settings.

  • I was also hoping the lighthouse would actually have a decent lens for rotating beams, and is it just me or is the new fountain... somewhat odd

  • @zig-zag-ltu
I'm still hopeful Rare will eventually relocate some NPCs to Port Merrick from other areas of the world. I really like the "street market" theme they went with as far as the Merchant Alliance's area is concerned, but I think that specific dock would be a lot cooler if they added someone like Umbra to the immediate vicinity. (I think there's enough space there to fit her in on the right-hand side of the pier. I said this in another post a while back, but relocating Umbra would also have the added benefit of allowing us to shop at her "store" without having skeletons spawn behind us.)

  • @lucky11 Great idea! Would love to see there Sudds too

I also feel that having a port is a great way to introduce new NPCs to the game who have just arrived at Sea of Thieves, because of this fancy new port town they heard about ^^

  • I believe they are finished with construction but they are finished with the ports. I am sure the dry dock gate will be lifted and something will be added eventually. There is already a splash when you watch a crew mate jump in the hole so I bet water is being added there.

  • I have faith there are future plans for Port Merrick.

  • @pithyrumble yep not a fan, even the ladders are a pain

  • Check out my post/theory about Guilds!
I think this is what will be coming to PM later in the game

  • @craftergames706 Makes me wonder.

If let's say Port Merrick became a place for guilds, given how massive the new faction shops are. How would the rest of the outpost would be more lively? I don't see players coming there 'to hang out' as there are enough bad apples that would shoot on sight just for the heck of it. So after wasting your time several times you would simply give up if you see more ships around it. Especially if you spent time getting supplies. So you would obviously visit it when its empty or when you spawn, but I can't imagine without massive changes it becoming filled with pirates interacting without guns. More NPCs would be welcome tho.

If PVP was disabled, all the loot turn in points would need to disappear as it would not make sense to have a safe heaven where you can turn in loot. Those cannons around it, would make sense if crew sizes were a lot bigger. One small cannon without supplies wouldn't stop a Galleon rolling in. Idk, I'm curious to see if there will be more to Port Merrick, but I just hope that if there will be, Developers would spend more time thinking about all 'pros and cons' comparing to when they released Hourglass allowing an alliance to stomp on a single ship and get reputation. Or something from that playbook.

  • Aye, I believe that alot will come matey. Especially, if Guild will arrive on shores of Sea of Thieves, Port Merrick will be a place for 'em. So keep yer eye on horizon, seas are changing. In the ways we cannot imagine.
