Has this ever been suggested? I'm sure that I am no the only one who would like to be able to duel my crewmates. Kind of like WoW where you could challenge someone to a duel and it would count down 3,2,1 and than start. I wish I could prompt duels with my crewmates because than I could practice PvP in a more friendly setting. Also instead of being killed and sent to the ferry of the damned, the duel would just end when the player would normally die and health regenerates back to full.
Dueling with Crewmates
This has actually been requested since Year 1. I would love to see them allow a duel challenge. Give a new slap to a crewmate who accepts and you get placed into a limited arena. It would be a good way for the strongest PVPer of the group to help foster the skills of the less experienced members. A taking them under the wing, which is very much in the spirit of Sea of Thieves. Plus, it would be a fun way to add a new crew interaction and allow for RP moments when someone wants to challenge their captain.
Borderlands does this as well.
An interesting part of the SoT Wikipedia page discussing development answers this question:
“ Rare further added that they felt they have the responsibility to create a "positive online social space". Design changes were made to champion the concept of cooperation and friendship. For instance, players cannot hurt others in the same crew, and all rewards are shared equally among crew members. In one of the game's early prototypes, players in the same crew can betray each other, though the feature was scrapped because the team felt that the experience was "horrible". “
So they clearly tried this out, but as it states, the experience just wasn’t good.

Because, you know, blunder bombs and fire bombs aren't a thing...
But at least they explain why friendly fire via canons is disabled. I still that that'd help balance the boarding meta...

Yes, of all of the friendly fire issues the only one that really should be changed is cannon fire, it makes no sense.
@capn-cayde "Give a new slap to a crewmate who accepts and you get placed into a limited arena."
I'm not really for or against duels, but sending them to an instance is a big big big no.
Sorry. I wasn't clear. I didn't mean an instance. I meant something like a limited-sized circle, like the hourglass. A small "arena" as in a specified zone that, if left, means you lose. I completely agree with your sentiment.
