Just imagine, you a solo sloop and you’re being hunted down by galleon after you discovered the infamous Box of Wondrous Secrets. You’re out of cannonballs and they’re fast approaching. Then you realize you have a secret weapon. A High Explosive projectile. You load it into your cannon and fire it at the incoming ship in a last ditch attempt to thwart the attack. The explosive hits the galleon on the top deck causing the front two masts to fall, dropping anchor, killing an enemy cremate, and causing a fire. (That was a lucky shot). If you had cannonballs you would have been able to keep up a fight, but the exploding shell bought you enough time to escape the attack and finally sell the Box of Wondrous Secrets.
