The music was playing, I could occasionally see it from time to time when it swam next to my ship, never aggro'd me, after the storm had passed I never saw it once, then I heard the charge theme play and the it stopped as it despawned. Anyone else have this happen to them? Might highlight it for reference, was weird as hell.

likely wasn't your meg but was attached to someone else, even if it "spawned" on you
I haven't lost any of my own megs in open sea or nearby islands, but many are bouncing when they were meant for a different crew.
which is unfortunate but I wouldn't be surprised if it's intentional to cater to the groups that are always fired up about pve spawns during pvp and vocal newer players.
Megs have been weird in general since they were updated. Not specifically like that.
So far I've seen:
-meg showed up with music different from its boss music, did nothing, and left
-meg was trying to bite a ship from the back and couldn't catch up to it, so it was stuck in bite-mode

As you know, that plays after a bite when it temporarily dives. It also plays if you get out of its range, and it's about to vanish. Either the new spawning messed it up, or you stumbled upon a meg spawned for somebody else.

It had spawned on me earlier near crooked masts at the same time as a skelly sloop but never did anything.
Then it vanished until it showed up again there on the approach to plunder.
Come to think of it, my crew has also had a meg spawn on our galley at the same time that a skelly galley did, and the meg didn't do anything that time either.

We also had one really odd occurrence during a cursed sails event when we fired on a Meg, it freaked out, swam away, and apparently had an aneurysm and died. We know because it alerted us to the defeat. Then, when we sank the boss galley, the Meg treasure spawned in the exact same spot as the rest. Really weird.

Pve likely killed it unless a player took it out
skelly ships will target megs if they are actively engaged
once you get a shot on something you'll get credit for the kill if it's killed by a player or pve later on before it despawns

Wow. All of the hours I have in the game and didn't realize skelly ships will attack Megs. Thanks for that!The weird part was the treasure spawning in the literal, exact same spot.
