Hi all, I've read through a few post on the PvPvE debate. To start off I understand it's a pirate game, pillaging and stealing is name of the game. Combat makes sense and can be enjoyable. I've played quite a bit (almost Pirate Legend) and have found two main schools of thought when looking at the game. Following the story of SoT or following the action. Basically PvE or PvP. With that in mind I was excited to go into Community weekend and hopefully increase my Renown to Pirate Legend. I was not able to because of other players. I attempted the Fort of the Damned multiple times, only once was I able to sell the loot. The other times I was killed on the boat or island while collecting the loot or while I was sailing to an outpost. Now being community day I had hoped people would be "nicer," but no they were not. The only time I completed the quest was by making alliances with EVERYONE on the server. It just makes the game so infuriating, having to do the same boss/quest over and over because of people keep stealing from you. My husband has stopped playing because of this too! It made the whole day and experience so disappointing. After reading the other forums it's clear the senior team does not want to do anything but it's clear to me quite a bit of the community would enjoy some part the game being peaceful. Whether it be a mod or server (that way you can play with others) I want to continue enjoying Sea of Thieves.
Community Weekend Unenjoyable
It may help to do a search for discord servers called "Alliance servers". They can help offer a little bit of a break from the general PvP part of the PvPvE gameply when it gets to be too much.
I still sail in open general most of the time, but every now and again it's nice to sail with an alliance.
Some streamers offer events on the weekends were people in their community sail together too.
Community day doesnt specifically mean a day to bring the community together so much as it is to celebrate the community. It can be utilized by the community for profits, but thats not the reason behind it, rare is a proud company and community day is them showing appreciation towards the community that keeps this game going.
I attempted the Fort of the Damned multiple times
You tried to do a high value target. That was your mistake
Now being community day I had hoped people would be "nicer
Idk about you everyone I met wanted to make an alliance server and we did. Or they gave me the win during hourglass fights.
Could be time of day or region. Maybe even Xbox vs pc?
If you ever want to try to get your husband back into the game so you can play together and you want any pve advice or to discuss pve strategies to find session approaches that are compatible for both you and your husband either/both of you can message me anytime.
I can't do anything about the crews you encounter but I can be a resource to try help out with my experience based on your specific goals.
@wyvernkraehe I hadn't heard of these before but I'll definitely check them out. This might be exactly what I'm looking for. Thank you for reaching out!
@koiempress9254 They just dropped a new skull that makes FotD easier to start. FotD drops a valuable Chest of Legends. FotD puts a giant skull beacon into the sky. Prior to S9, it was a PVP magnet. S9 has made it a stronger PVP magnet. Hate to say it, but your negative experience was your own fault.
If you wanted to increase your renown to PL, you should have stuck to voyages. Lesson learned I bet.
From what I have experienced in this game, unless you are willing to sink in hundreds of hours learning every aspect of the games pvp system. Rare has no intention of ever adding anything to benefit players who do not want to engage in pvp. They have stated this before. They won't even try to match you will players on your skill level either. Players here will say don't do events then so that leaves you running the same 6 quest types on loop for your entire time playing the game. Even then you are likely to be spotted by players who refuse to do anything but pvp and they will loot you while they are risking nothing on their ship. That is just how the game is, was, and always will be.
Community day was not a day about coming together and celebrating what we want the community to be but it is a day about the community being what it actually is.

A pver's survival is always based on efficiency
over time content has been added and nerfs have been implemented that directly support efficiency for pve
A sea fort, maybe a skelly sloop sailing around, and an island or two of random loot (all nearby an outpost) is good money, it's efficient, and it's in the risk range that allows high chance of success for inexperienced pirates, as long as they move around and sell regularly.
a shipwreck voyage is great money, mid risk, keeps people mostly on their boats and moving around, great for efficiency
Moving around regularly and selling regularly keeps attacks to a minimum.
Hoppers rarely will bother with what I suggest especially during a higher activity time like right now. Even if they do as long as people sell regularly (which is very easy now with sovereigns) it's minimal loss and solid gains
Fort of the damned is the only player generated event, it sends up a server wide beacon inviting players to contest and steal. If you're a new player grinding to pl and not overly comfortable with pvp then it is not the way to go. Quick and easy events like sea forts or stock up on tridents to help other events.
in my opinion, enjoying the game all comes down to your point of view, and honestly when it comes to community day it's probably a good idea to avoid world events unless you're looking for a fight, besides, there is usually a lot more experienced players out trying to get that gold as well, most of the time even I have problems fighting them, so usually just find different ways to outplay them, besides it's like I always say "outgunned, but never outfoxed."

or you could turn and fight?
Never carry more loot than you are willing to lose. This threshold is different for everyone. And its determined differently. For me it's loot needed for commendations. So if I'm solo, I'm going to do my best to sell Chests of Fortune and Reapers chests/bounties as I am able since they are the only loot based commendation I have left. When I sail with my friends, it's what they need for comms. Gold and rep aren't important to us.
If you feel you need to run all the time after collecting loot. Sell a bit more frequently, sovereigns have made it very easy when on a captained vessel.

Then you are playing the wrong game. This is a shared world PvEvP game. It designed to be this way on purpose. The development team is trying to make people fight over loot more again. Not having to deal with players will likely never be a problem.
But you can wait for custom servers. You will be able to avoid all other people. But the shops don't work. You can't earn gold, commendations, or reputation. But you can sail to your hearts content.
The risk is this game is the other players. PvE is not the risk.

The players are fine. PvP is a completely acceptable and encouraged way of play. So is PvE. But the best way to play is PvPvE. Where you partake in everything.

The best way "you" like to play is PvPvE
It should be the best way, but is not due to lack of SBMM on adventure and the possibility to get matched in the same server with a player with 5.000 hours and another with 50.
This is the main reason why Xbox Only servers and Alliance Servers are more and more popular these days. Xbox servers tends to be less agressive and Ally.... well, there is zero pvp and surprisely, all the servers I know, are full with +2 hours queue to play. Some players just want to chill, fish or get some chests during they free time, not invest 500-600 hours into getting good at PvP, is a game, not a job.
Now its fine, is season start and the seas are full of players, but mid season, the same players that make newbies quit or swap to pve servers, cries because "Seas are empty". Yeah, because you (I mean, them) made tons of players quit with your behaviour. One thing is being pirate against players with your skill level, another thing is abuse players with less skill and steal their loot just because "Is a pirate game" "Git gud".
Do you know how much is SoT new players retention? Less than 15%, this is pathetic. And that 15% stills playing because ally servers exists xD
I don´t care about getting sunk, but that is my case because I have millions of gold and almost everything bought, but I want this game healthy, and that means to care new players and make them feel comfortable playing SoT, not ruining their experience on purpose. If they attack me first, I will response, but I will not abuse a newbie just because the game allows me to do it.
I can buy a chainsaw, but it doesnt mean that I can walk to the forest and cut every single tree because I want without caring the rest of people.

No. SBMM would ruin adventure. It would prohibit people from being able to play with eachother.

Xbox servers are what they are. But they should be reworked to be based off of input and not device. Controller only would make way more sense than xbox+ controller only. Alliance servers are a joke. There is a reason none of them are affiliates.

If players are quitting because they get sunk, this is likely not the game for them. Their pirates do the same damage, move at the same pace, and boats sink just as quickly as everyone else's.
Do you know how much is SoT new players retention? Less than 15%, this is pathetic. And that 15% stills playing because ally servers exists xD
These numbers are public, nice making up stats.

You have millions likely from playing on alliance servers, where gold is printed. But those servers represent a very tiny portion of the player base.
I can buy a chainsaw, but it doesnt mean that I can walk to the forest and cut every single tree because I want without caring the rest of people.
That's because it's likely illegal, not because you care. If you were getting paid for wood and it wasn't illegal, I bet you would cut them all down. Most people would.
In my country we have a portion of forest that we can cut for self consume, but no One in the Town cuts the entire forest for itself or for sell It to the others later, for example. This is an example of community, a good One.
90% of muy gold was earned on Adventure, not on Alliance xD I played there like 50-60 hours and the I swapped to arena untill I got all commendations, the Adventure. If I recomend that Servers to others is just because It fits with their idea, not because I use It actually.
SBMM Will not ruin anything, if you want to play with Friends, It Will adapt to the higher MMR for example, like DBD does or Overwatch 2 does. This is something people doesnt want because they cant abuse others on their main accounts, and they should need smurfs to abuse.
I repeat, I am not against PvePvP environment, I am against abuse on new players. Yes, like you said, they can do exactly the same things as a veteran, with the difference of experience and skill between them, a very important factor IMO.
This suggestions are not for me, I can manage myself to do all content without Major problems, but no everyone can and they should be able to.
Oh boy...you are so speaking the words of so, so, sooooo many in this community. The fact is that this game is gorgeous, it is fun and engaging, there are soooo many commendations, soooo many Tall Tales, there is soooooo much to do and have fun with and sadly the one thing that continues to kill off fans and players who want to keep playing but can't because of frustration and rage quitting continues to build.
This is a pirate game. I hear this ALL THE TIME!! This is a pirate game. Pirating etc. Everyone...and mean EVERYONE I speak to says they are horrible at PVP and that they don't play as often as they would like. We all thought that the new "faction" battles would control that and keep the PVP'ers to themselves so we can go and work on our commendations and have fun, sadly that did not happen.
I enjoyed community weekend because I limited my time and limited my activity. My crew and I no longer accrue massive amounts of loot to sell. We no longer look to do events that we can get pirated on unless we are in an alliance. We keep an eye on the horizon and we used to wait until first fired upon to engage. We want to follow the pirate code and try to ally with others for the common good, alas, even with a alliance flag up, we find 20% of those we come in contact with want to ally. In fact...yesterday alone I was solo slooping in the Roar and had nothing on my because I was simply trying to get a commendation completed. A ship comes up, I wave and don't fire, I have nothing on my ship but a storage crate, and I got sunk. I blocked that player.
What is disappointing on community days is that there are no alliance "goals" on the bingo card. Instead there are "steal" from another crew, or "duel" another crew on there making it the goal of the community to attack others. On top of that, 90% of the Partnered streamers all they stream is PVP or stealing from others. Pirating others, not actually working the game for all the OTHER AMAZING components. I know that I work very hard at focusing on my content and making it about the game as a whole, not the one aspect that is infuriating and makes soooooo sooooo sooooo many hate it and leave it. I want to bring people back to this game and make it fun for everyone and not anxiety inducing.
Solutions are there. And they don't have to play against the core of the game. Simply put...Make it so on one server, two to three ships can join together as friendly ships. Friends as a fleet. Maximum of 3 now that more people are allowed on servers. Just make it so friends can join on the same server up to a maximum of three ships.
I am sooo sorry you and your husband had a horrible experience. But know that there are many out here ready to be "good" pirates.

Hi all, I've read through a few post on the PvPvE debate. To start off I understand it's a pirate game, pillaging and stealing is name of the game.
This sentence alone cancels your entire post.
Combat makes sense and can be enjoyable.
Yep, it's inevitable and enjoyable and it make sense because it is part of the core mechanics of this game which is a PVPVE shared adventure world, of the pirates fantasy.
I've played quite a bit (almost Pirate Legend)
Awesome keep going!
and have found two main schools of thought when looking at the game. Following the story of SoT or following the action. Basically PvE or PvP.'
Yeah you just basically said your first sentence of this post again. You can do either or both yes, so...
With that in mind I was excited to go into Community weekend and hopefully increase my Renown to Pirate Legend.
Yep the whole community was. Renown is the points for your season progression, not the reputation points for your trading companies reputation to reach Pirate Legend (minimum of three to obtain it.)
I was not able to because of other players. I attempted the Fort of the Damned multiple times, only once was I able to sell the loot. The other times I was killed on the boat or island while collecting the loot or while I was sailing to an outpost.
Firstly, you sound that you are not a confident PVP player which is fine. Secondly you choose to do a world event, that is initiated by...players...which would surely bring people to you, friendly or to steal and surely you would have recognise that was going to happen when you started the FOTD. Thats your first mistake. You sound like a player who is not PVP oriented which is fine, but you must of also realised that you will have to do at some point, and if FOTD is involved, like seriously, high level loot is on peoples radar, and certainly to steal it from you either while you doing it so they complete before you return and if do try to return they will try to sink you again, or as you complete it and open the vault, another good way to do it. Doing at sea is also fine. Either keep a better eye on the horizon, check for tuckers, always be aware of your surroundings.
Now being community day I had hoped people would be "nicer,"
Community day does not mean everyone is going to be willing to be "nicer" which I assume you mean either alliances or leave you be, I mean they can if they want, either they got loot, don't want to be bothered and if you do they'll either run or sink you when you are in proxamity but they are not obliged to, and if they want to sink and steal your loot, good they can, people are still going to play the game as the normally do, all that has happened is that Rare have made gold, rep, renown, allegiance increase, as well as the spawn rare of ancient skeletons as a way to celebrate the community and the 5 year anniversary of this amazing game, developers and the community. Yes some people maybe willing to alliance which is fine but yes some people are going to try and steal your loot because, "Sea of THIEVES."
but no they were not.
And that is perfectly fine.
The only time I completed the quest was by making alliances with EVERYONE on the server.
Cool, you found like minded players and worked together for community weekend, nothing wrong with that at all, that's awesome.
It just makes the game so infuriating, having to do the same boss/quest over and over because of people keep stealing from you.
Yep, it is infuriating but you just have to suck it up, improve your PVP, or outsmart your enemies, no point complaining about people stealing from you. Everyone in this game has lost to another crew and they claim the loot, but the loot is no ones until its cashed in. You can either try and go for round two and try claim your loot back, or go into a different server or come back to the game later. We have all been there, you are not more special because it has happened to you, it happens to all of us, including competent crews, content creators and streamers.
My husband has stopped playing because of this too!
Okay, it is what it is, that's your choice.
It made the whole day and experience so disappointing.
Yep losing does suck, like I said everyone has been through it and many will probably get over it very quickly and continue playing because it's part of the game. Some will leave, say the game sucks, come on forums to vent out a pointless post about losing other crews which happens all the time.
After reading the other forums it's clear the senior team does not want to do anything
Nope, Rare are doing something, its called developing a game they care and love, and many people in the community of this game love, to play Sea of Thieves however they choose to do it, in the sandbox with the tools to do it.
but it's clear to me quite a bit of the community would enjoy some part the game being peaceful.
So? Some players are not good, which is fine you will improve over time, and it can be very irritating to lose but who cares, as much as I love this game like many others, it's still just a video game, it really isn't that deep. Just try and again overtime you will improve, figure out your strengths and weakness and improve. You are not going to have an easier experience just to gain everything, you have to play to EARN it, and it will come with practise, no one in the game started as a pro, and neither will, so either play and grow, or uninstall and play game fitting for you and your husband, just keep going no point giving up.
I saw someone say this and perfectly summarise what I was going to say, so I am going to power phrase.
A vocal minority does not represent the majority of the community.
A lot of people are fine with the game, and the developers too.
Whether it be a mod or server (that way you can play with others)
No, you can not created a modded server, that would be against the rules and regulations of the game. NO, you are not getting a PVE server, Rare has already said and double down, that peaceful, PVE, private servers of any kind will never ever be implemented into Sea of Thieves, for players to avoid other players and have an easier experience of the game, you have to play to earn, not cheat or demand an easier access to rewards in this game. Everyone else has, so why should get anything better.
I want to continue enjoying Sea of Thieves.
And there is nothing stopping you from doing so. You must want to play the game, but you must also accept, PVP is inevitable regardless if you play PVP or PVE or both, you can't avoid PVP, no amount of running, or playing in the Devils Roar, or demanding Rare to change their vision of the game to add a peaceful server is going to change that, you just need to improve your PVP and how you engage it because already you made a bad decision doing FOTD which can only be started by players, if you are not a confident PVP player, that's on you. They are not wrong, they were not trying to upset you or ruin your gaming experience. They were play Sea of Thieves the way they wanted to just like the people you alliance with, and there is nothing wrong with that. If you chose to give up, then whatever, nobody wants you too but its your choice and no one will care if you leave, this game isn't for you. If you want to reach Pirate Legend, just like many other players who are Pirate Legend like myself, you need to play the game and accept, 1 you are not a good PVPer so you need to improve by practising and engaging with it and finding your tactics and what works best for you and your crew, 2 find players who are good and sail with them, find your strengths and weakness and you will become a more competent crew, even in competent crews, some players are better at being defensive so they do repairs and keep the ship afloat and in angle to fight their opponents than offensive, players who will make their opponent not be able to fight back, board the enemy ship, stop them from repairing, fighting back, and they will probably be willing to play with you if you communicate with them and honest with them, because you WILL improve overtime, try Sea of Thieves discord, looking for groups on Xbox as places to try and do this. Otherwise this game ain't for you. But just give it another go.

You're missing the point, we dont want to turn and fight, we dont want that to have to be a thing, we dont want to fight other people. we want to just sail in a server with nothing but the ocean and the beasts within haha.
No he is not missing the point, PVP is inevitable, it is not something you can just avoid, someone either wants, you're loot, the island you're at, the outpost you're selling, you resources, to practise their PVP, to simply just sink you because they didn't like the cosmetics, regardless of the reason, they can and there is nothing wrong with it, you can try and communicate with them ask to stop, but if they say no, move on. You don't want to fight then tough, sink then. You want to play without other players...in a shared adventure world. Make it make sense. Simply this game isn't for you then.

"Everyone can do whatever" is just a poor excuse for a badly balanced game. What i'm supposed to do when i'm sailing with my GF and suddendly 2 late game sails with over 20 people just snipe me from an ocean away?
save yourself time and stress and bounce servers
as someone that has an extreme amount of hours in randomly formed fights you aren't missing anything in your shoes.
The amount of time someone saves, stress someone prevents, and productivity someone maintains by just bouncing is significant. Just grab a new server and work on efficient strategy for goals, no matter what they are.
It's not the fighting or the leaving that leaves a hole, it's the wasted time on ego battles
