Canons in General

  • This is opinion only. Yours may vary.

I'm not much of a PvPer but I have to say, the only canons worth their salt....or at least seem to be the very best are the basic canons and any of the recolors. There is a reason most PvP streamers use the default models.

So my request, Rare, is to make canon cosmetics that look good AND are worth using in PvP....as in on-par with the basic canons.

Some aren't bad tbh honest but those are rare indeed. Yet none can match the fantastic field of view you get with the basics. Some canons have such a large muzzle AND a flared barrel that you literally cannot see the opposing ship unless you are at point blank range. For example, I love the look of the Bombardier Canons, but those are the very worse to use effectively. Same goes for the Gold Hoarders. The best looking canons tend to be the worse ones to actually use.

Since PvP has gotten a lot of love lately, why note design some canons specifically for PvP.

I tested a few models and here are my results, if anyone else is interested.

    SoT Canons

    S-Tier
    Default
    Sea Dog

    A-Tier
    Eternal Freedom
    Forsaken Ashes
    Barnacled
    Merchant Ambassador

    B-Tier
    Warsmith
    Sovereign
    Order of Souls

    C-Tier
    Royal Revenge
    Masked Renegade
    Hunter
    Dragon

    D-Tier
    Aristocrat
    Gold Hoarders
    Bombardier

  • I would put Eternal Freedom in the S tier with Golden Hour cannons for folks that have them since they are just golden versions of the default ones. I have pretty much all of them since launch and for me the Eternal Freedom ones have been the most accurate when I do my long range naval shots further out than most people can shoot.

Generally you can use and adapt to most, but the ones you want to avoid are the flared ones as you are shooting lower than the exit of the cannon is due to the well flared exit on it.

  • Personally i use the gilded phoenix cannons as they've got a nice decor to them but they're the right length and have no flare at the end.

  • Only a bad craftsman blames their tools. Aiming your cannon is about finding a two points of reference to use to adjust your aim. Doesn't matter if that's an iron sight, a rivet, a barnacle, or whatever. If you can use it to adjust your shots, you can hit.

I find the cannon flares make a bigger difference than the cannon. Some of let help you to see the ball/trajectory easier, and some of the obfuscate the process. But the cannon? No, no cannon bothers me.

  • I like my Lodestar cannons. They are gorgeous and they have a little iron-sight type peak at the end of the barrel.

  • @lordqulex True craftsmen use the best tools available. Tools make the difference. The right tool for the job. This isn't a "get gud" debate. If that were the case all the streamers that I see, who have mastered naval, are an order of magnitude better than most, wouldn't be using the default modeled canons so exclusively. Go look - 9 out of 10 PvP streamers use the default model, and that other 1 percent are using an A Tiered model. Why? Because they know these are the best to fight with. Sure, they could adapt to a bad canon model if they chose too, but they don't choose to. Why make their job harder?

Curious though....what is your go-to canon?

  • @maximusarael020 I don't own those but have been curious about them. They do look good.

  • @rikjaxx I like the bone crusher cannons.

  • I was looking at my list and re-thinking.....I really don't mind using the S, A, or even rarely B tiered canons in a fight. But the C and D tiered, I will only use when I'm not planning to fight at all, doing some sort of PvE quest or something.

Cannon flares actually help? I've kept them unequipped with the assumption that they just block my vision

There is one, ONE, that turns the ball white and helps you see its trajectory. Paired with the X when you hit, it makes shooting easier. I don't remember which one it is and it may be a side-effect of my graphics settings and color blindness so, take it with a grain of salt? But yea, there is one cannon flare that highlights the cannonball for me.

  • I'm not much of a PvPer

    Same with 90% everyone else.

reason most PvP streamers use the default models

Because they dont like a challenge. They dont wanna take time to learn something new, so they choose to use lack looking cannons. Very sad.

So my request, Rare, is to make canon cosmetics that look good AND are worth using in PvP

Meh. I rather they keep releasing cosmetic cannons that look cool and make aiming crazy. That be like adding "pay to win" cannon styles because "they make aiming better" we dont want any thing like that.

  • There are many different types of cannons that work very well for combat, it just depends entirely on what you get used to and how you learn it. I stick with default because thats what i learned to use and found a nice trick with aiming them using the rings. I have seen some people who can aim the bulky reaper cannons just as well if not better than me, just because thats what they learned to use.

  • Hot take - Warsmith cannons should be A tier. They're blocky, but they have three ironsights.
Killer whale cannons are cool and good, too.

  • @animeowl0807 I personally love the Warsmith canons. Perhaps my favorite of the game. They may well deserve an A-tier spot. I think I ranked them lower because they have a large barrel which blocked my view slightly more than the better tiered choices.

  • I fully agree we need more sailor cannon recolors especially more that change bases with hull since they are extremely versatile!

Though to push your point even more its not just that sailor cannons are one of the best, they are also the most used which means that people learned line ups and practice w/ them more than any other. Every player has them, and no player has an excuse not to put them on when requested. For example I personally played a lot with TSD/GSD cannons (even though they suck), and magpie cannons so am willing to use any of those as well, however I play w/ a lot of people who flat out refuse to use anything else which makes sense when you spent so much time practicing why would you want to put yourself at a disadvantage?

In short Rare should really add more sailor cannon recolors I would personally love to see a full line of silver sailor cosmetics for example!

What... under this same reasoning they should also be playing with a steering wheel instead of m&k or controller since it would look cooler. Why would you ever want to play at a disadvantage? You should not have to feel bad to make the choice between looking cool and being on equal playing field.

The best ones will always be the sailor so it won't ever be pay to win since the best would always be available for free.

  • @lordqulex my ship is a mix of sunshine parrot with bear and bird cosmetics they fit very well together im pretty accurate with my banjo cannons

  • @tesiccl those and wild rose I’m spot on with

  • Never had any problems with cannons, only certain cannon flares with a flashbang effect on them.

  • @jj-h816 funnily enough, the wild rose ones are just a reskin so this would make sense why you're good with both ^^

  • @lordqulex Technically you are correct. I do not agree 100% to the OP's list. But the killer whale cannons, how come they are not in S/A Tiers? I thought it is universally accepted ^^

Although I won't argue at this instance of the accuracy of the cannons, as the sailor ones seem to be the best, but take into consideration the Soul Flame ones, you have a green glow replacing a bunch of metal, allowing you to see more, I find myself better with killer whale/sailors(or any variation) more tho.

  • Cannons are about consistency.

Any cannons with a slight length/girth variance from the standard sailor cannons requires a tiny learning curve...but once you've got it down (and it's a quick relearn), it's no different than using the sailor -style cannons...even the ridiculously long barrel ones like the Silent Barnacle ones are easily adjusted to after a handful of cannon shots.

Unfortunately, SOT Partners and other streamers have brainwashed their communities to meta-game out of their minds...and that meta-gaming mentality spreads like wildfire to the rest of the community...and now the majority of the community just seems to think that any non-standard cannons are rubbish, make you worse, and are a disadvantage in PvP.

  • I don't really see the issue, once you adjust to the cannons you like.

Especially since, lets face it, unless you are right up close not moving and in calm water, you are not aiming directly at the ship anyway. The cannons with extra things at the ends can actually help with point of reference.

    I like the Warsmiths.

  • @nitroxien ++++ i want to recollor of sailors cannons, like golden cannons model, but thay can make silver, platinum etc.

I'd rather sink and look good than win and sail around with default ship 😎.

I thought PvP streamers using the default ship was because they didn't like to waste a minute doing cosmetics after a server hop ... ?
