Returning anniversary cosmetics…

  • What is the point in bringing back old anniversary items such as the golden sailor cannons as it ruins their rarity and the ability to show them off as a long-time player. Why not complete the golden sailor ship set or add more equipment items like they did with social swag? Just seems like a simple reskin that wouldn’t be hard to make more of for new items rather than bringing back exclusive items from previous years.

  • Every single item offered for this event (minus the eyepatch) was a previous login reward that took no effort to earn. Getting enough doubloons to earn cosmetics from previous events have more weight to them than logging into the game on a Friday. Also, it's been 5 years, very few players own a fair amount of these cosmetics because of the short login window on weekends/weekdays where one probably wouldn't touch the game.

Now we've gotta "work" to earn them, while the game is a lot bigger than ever. The horrors.

It's not that big of a deal in all honesty, and I like content preservation, things that are good/cool are things that anyone interested should be able to get their hands on. Pirate stories for cosmetics be damned, some of these items are just too good to leave locked in a vault forever.

  • Sorta wish they added, hey if you already unlocked this item and complete the event than you get "this item"

  • @nex-stargaze I said this mainly for the golden sailor cannons which I got back during first anniversary which did cost money by the way(albeit not very much) and just wanted to have it as a trophy that showed I played back then

  • You have to consider they never said these items were exclusive, they just sorta poofed away after the time that they were available, but nothing said they were exclusive other than the word of players.

Because the game is not about you showing off, nor should it be.

  • ''Oh no, another person gets cosmetics that i got just by logging in years ago. What a nightmare''

I agree and I grow weary of the gate keeping mentalities in this community, especially regarding cosmetics.

  • Gatekeeping cosmetics is stupid and you should stop it. I will add that the lack of event content it adds to those who already have them is kinda upsetting, because now people who already have it basically have no reason to participate

It would only make sense if there was an economy behind it, but in this game there is no player economy.

I can understand if something is expressly intended to be limited for a few reasons, but not with stuff like this. It annoys me when people say they are upset that "my exclusive item in a game about cosmetics that you like, is now not exclusive to ME!" when the item in question was never made exclusive in the first place.

Its like the legend curse, or just about every single stream drop that comes back for a second round. Always people act like rare is destroying their livelihood because they are bringing something back, just because that person only wanted that item to flaunt it in the faces of people who dont have it but might like it.

If some ones self worth is measured in how much stuff they have that some one else doesnt have, they should really reassess some things in life.

I would argue they still have no actual real value but I agree with you most of what you said here.

  • Can I get Allegiance since I have everything else already??

    Please? 🥺😋

No, you'll get nothing like the rest of us but an eye patch and ruminating on old memories.

I have all the items and I don’t mind sharing them with others who weren’t there at the time.

My problem is that I literally have nothing worth earning and have no reason to participate in this event. I get an eyepatch for my troubles. How small is an eyepatch? Who will notice what I earned? How can people tell from a distance? They have to be point blank to notice what eyepatch I’m wearing! Sails, cannons, wheel, eye of reach can all be seen from a distance. I should get something like that.

Personally, I feel like the rewards should be done like the emissary system. New players can earn two rewards from the past years and the older players get a new reward. The new players can earn the rewards next year and so on. The emissary rewards require you to start with the sails first and rewards items in order. By giving new players 2 rewards and older players one item, the new players can catch up while still rewarding the player who have been here since year 1.

  • It’s okay for these cosmetics to return but earning them is way way too easy. It should have been for completing an entire challenge not just one goal. To earn a year 1 cosmetic, all u have to do is
    1.Hit a skelly ship with a cannonball
    2.Catch a single fish
    3.Reach a tall tale checkpoint
    4.Visit a shrine or treasury
    5.Visit a sea fort
Why should a noob be given golden sailors cannons for doing this list of actions?!?!

But they do..... Not an NFT marketplace bs, but they tell a story.
If youve been around enough, one glimpse and it tells you already things about them.
Or teach players who havent been around, ive been asked countless times where did I got my lantern from, (its the glowing skull from year 1 halloween update) and it was always a positive interaction about it.

I really dont understand why people thinks its gatekeeping.
Whats so wrong in asking for items to stay rare, and look together forward to new cosmetics?
New for everyone, newbies and veterans alike.

  • If items were announced as get them before they are gone forever and are now returning. I don't think that's right. But I'll live! Golden sailor cannons cost us 1 gold!

Having spent countless millions on cosmetics I still find my pirate wearing the same 2 pieces of clothing it has done for a few years now.

It's all about the memories of how I earn my cosmetics that matters to me.

No one can ever take that away or make it less exclusive.

What do we get out of it being difficult in game?

They locked the pirate legend curse behind a silly grind compared to how many of us originally earned it.

Not like we get anything out of sending people on these ridiculous grinds for cosmetics being brought back for people.

  • It doesn’t need to be a ridiculous grind. I’m just saying there needs to be some sort of challenge instead of visiting a sea fort. That way the item loses rarity but at least not everyone has it.

  • I was proud to have them and show how long i play, now they are worthless

Why not give a little different cannon ?

Like 1 golden stripe less or something...

Thanks for the kick in the nuts Rare

Such a pain to do all this again, right ? I swear if they make us do another sea fort or fish for whatever reason in the future I'll have a seizure. At least skelly ships are really fun.

Whats so wrong in asking for items to stay rare ?

And as well, what's so wrong in asking for items not to be rare ?

But they do..... Not an NFT marketplace bs, but they tell a story.

Only story any "rare" cosmetic tell others is that you've been playing this game too much. Noone care what some random dude he/she meets online in a video game is wearing.

Except you. What you're wearing should only hold significance for you. And that's great. I still have strong and living memories and stories abouts some games I played with friends in the SNES/N64/early-web era, and I don't need an in-game cosmetic to remember all this (some of those games won't even be playable now anyway). I don't even have screenshots of Goldeneye, yet I fondly remember all the "stories" that mean something to me. For SoT, I'd still have PLENTY of screenshots to remember the good times once it's over. Really no need for that funny hat or shiny figurehead.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not against unlocking stuff in-game as achivement trophies (well, maybe I do when the grind is too much, but this is another topic).
I'm just saying rarity that comes from the mere fact the one was just LUCKY to be able to play on certain times/encounter a certain meg variant (just RNG)/watching some streams/win some giveaway just certainly don't "tell a story". RNG is not "a story". Playing SoT in 2018 is not a "story".
These cosmetics are here purely for player retention and exploiting FOMO. You guys really should stop encouraging questionable marketing techniques like this. This is what got us the curses at lvl 100/1000 and the inflation (so much for that shiny trinket ? I could buy a whole ship livery with this... I don't see many decorated ships too often, 6 months in captaincy, do you ? Oh, and was it a pain to get those DA sails, both in time and money ? Cos' don't you dare thinking about decorating your ship with fish trophies.... I made that mistake for one of my sloops...)
Cos' sinking 180 ships or catching 1000 pondies DO tell a story, yes, but a painful and not very glorious one.....

  • @jolly-ol-yep 😬

Playing too much? Did my joy in playing SOT sometimes hurts you?

As for no one cares, hmm many did... Some had these items like me and some didnt but were interested in how.

And if someone is having a FOMO meltdown maybe they should take time off from the game, for me these items are not just flex.
They tell a story about how did you got them and by looking at it you can tell if the player infront of you took a part in Sea of Thieves for a while.

Also, Sea of Thieves was very weak in content, these items from year 1 are a thank you for the community who still took a part in it.

  • As an original beta tester for this game i am disappointed they re-released old cosmetics.

1.) Logging in Year 1 was an achievement and was recognized. People are acting like this was the most fun game on the planet back then and everyone should just get everything because there was no effort. This game had no content and was in a really bad spot before GamePass even existed.

2.) 5th anniv feels “phoned in”. All cosmetics we previously in game even the eye patch. The eye patch is the same model as the Black Dog eyepatch which was turned into the Day 1 patch, then the 1000 day patch, etc. We didn’t even get a red/gold variant. This anniv just feels bad and nothing special about it.

3.)Cosmetics = Progression. Many of my rare cosmetics have sparked conversation of what it was like back in those days with the people I sail with. These were so special to me even others are just calling it a “log in” bonus. The Golden Sailor cannons have lost their magic and appeal.

4.) No advertised as “time limited” or “exclusive” -This argument is totally false. Screenshots have been circulating on Twitter showing the announcement of these Year 1 cosmetics being advertised as time-limted and exclusive. I’m not saying Rare lied about this, but the misinformation spreading these were never advertised that was is very frustrating to see.

5.) I know this post will likely upset the people that never got a chance to own these cosmetics and to you I would say Rare should have came up with new an exciting stuff for both of us so in a few years we could show it off. FOMO is alive and well across the game, industry, and human nature. If anyone could buy anything at any time then what is the point? I know its all worthless pixels on a screen but we can at least wear the story of our pirating lives until that day comes when servers shut down for good.

Wow. What a story. You logged on. I need to sit this was too much.

FOMO is alive and well across the game, industry, and human nature

And what would you call the opposite ? Gatekeeping ? Just wanting that what you have can't be enjoyed by others. I guess it's just selfishness, maybe. In any case, you had 4 years to play with your toys, time to share.

  • Does anyone actually use their golden goodies regularly?

  • @pithyrumble

    Nope.

I've wasted millions of my booty on glamorous items over the years and look like a tramp and Sail a wreck, wielding rusty weapons held together with bandages.

  • I think bringing back everything is good, because players get to keep other rare items. For example:

4th anniversary: Golden Sailor Wheel (rereleased) and cannon flare (time limited)
3rd: The sails were the only reward, so I'm slightly annoyed that they're back.
2nd: X marks the spot EOR (rereleased), emote (time limited) and sails (time limited)
1st: Golden Sailor Cannons (rereleased), hat (time limited) and Cap'n Bones' Cutlass (time limited)

Not all of them are back, which is good.
