Cannon Flares - Revenue Generating Enhancement

  • I am guessing I'm not alone in avoiding spending ancient coins on Cannon Flares since the overwhelming majority of them make cannon use worse than the default cannon visuals. There's a lot of them that are really cool, but they're low-key a pay-to-lose cosmetic in a lot of cases. Heck, pretty much all streamers and even your partners consistently make fun of them and discourage thousands of people from buying them.

    What I propose is a toggle that turns the flare visuals off for your ship (sets them to default) while you are on cannons.

    This would allow other crews and your crewmates that are not on cannons to still enjoy the flares while not hindering the performance of the cannoneer(s).

    I know that I would go back and purchase a whole bunch of the cannon flares if they weren't such a pay-to-lose cosmetic.

  • @sweetsandman That works. I have a few, and they don’t bother me. My friends hate them because they obscure their view. So, I only equip them when I am solo. Your idea would solve the problem. Good thinking.

  • Some cannon flares are used because they obscure enemy sight as well.

    You're unwittingly asking for pay to win. Can't aim because of cannon flare? Don't use it.

    Do you want to look cool or have an "advantage" make a choice, you don't get both. (Same argument for the DicantsailA sails)

  • It's a weird dilemma, because all of the new cannon flares available are not free. You cannot purchase them with gold or doubloons, and the default ones are just as intrusive as the latest cannon flare. It's either Pay to lose, or pay to win, and neither should be a reasonable scenario.

    Though just not using cannon flares if you're playing the game "seriously" is probably the better scenario.

  • To be quite honest, cannon glares never bothered me. I'm too busy looking at the cannonball trajectory hoping it hits to appreciate the visual effects on each shot.

    I watch a lot of streamers and I've not heard anyone recommend a flare because they obscure enemy sight. The Cutthroat flares are regarded as the "most meta", but the Crimson Crypt ones used to be better...and neither is/was for the purpose of obscuring the enemy's site.

    The purpose of this suggestion is to mitigate the "pay-to-lose" mentality associated to cannon flares and potentially generate revenue for Rare.

    Again...trying to suggest something that eliminates the overarching sentiment of "pay-to-lose" surrounding Cannon Flares and potentially generate revenue for Rare.

    The Cutthroat ones are the most "meta" currently...the crimson crypt ones used to be "meta" but they were nerf'd in patch 2.3.2

  • I’ve noticed. When the bug where the flares is disabled, my aiming improves…

    So if they have option to disable it, it may also help people aim and hit more. But that just me

  • I want a balancing pass to make sure all flares have the same transparency and dissipation time. Then let’s talk about options to hide them while firing.

    To be clear, I'm not suggesting an option to disable ALL cannon flares. I'm suggesting that cannoneers have an option to only visually see the default instead of whatever flare cosmetic is applied.

    Yeah, that'd be good too. Though, you'd think they would have done that to begin with especially seeing how many of their partners pretty much openly discourage using flares.

    Either way, get rid of the pay-to-lose state of cannon flares and profit.

  • @pithyrumble not one person uses cannon flares to obscure enemy sight. Maybe you’re thinking of the red/white flares that you shoot. But you always want one that has the least time where the flare hinders your view.
