Question About Push to Talk

  • When you start playing sea of thieves the default setting for push to talk is off so does this mean that the mic was on at all times before you set it to another setting?

  • depending on your mic settings (being on/off) outside of the game maybe

The game has a history of content being made around hot mics, many of which obviously were not aware that they were being heard/recorded. Something that has long bothered me personally.

Hot mic is a great feature but people should be informed and have their privacy protected to a reasonable degree by having people opt in.

  • if so the game should warn you that the mic may be on. Especially when there is a younger audience for this game.

  • I agree.

I don't like default on hot mic.

  • There is also an option you can turn on in the settings menu which displays a small speech bubble icon in the top right corner of the screen whenever your mic is on. It really helps.

  • I got a question regarding the ...umm I am acctually not sure what you call this thing... you know the thing you use to shout from the distance to other crews, the one mounted on a stick to act like a microphone in The New Golden Sands outpost.... Do you just put it to your mouth and talk, or you still need to press 'push to talk' button? I was always resorting to texting until recently.

If I can make sense of what you're trying to talk about...

The Speaking Trumpet in your inventory only modifies the range of whatever is coming from your communications, this also includes Pirate Chat messages you may send, or, somehow, any typed out messages that you may send. This may also be fairly effective if you manage to enable text to speech in your settings.

When using your microphone though, if you have a push-to-talk key and push-to-talk enabled, you will need to press that key, alongside the input(s) to use for speaking trumpet when held (M1/RT to speak outward, M2/LT to whisper). This can prove to be a little awkward, which is where giving push to talk a single press toggle, or disabling it might be more effective for the speaking trumpet.

  • @nex-stargaze Yeah that makes sense and as you said pushing two buttons to activate felt a little akward therefore was not sure If it was needed, but thanks for explaining.

Any idea how it works with text?

I've had people successfully talk to me over text with it, but I have no idea how they do it, since as far as I'm aware you can't hold the trumpet up and type at the same time.

  • @scheneighnay Hence the "somehow" because I believe it may be possible, but there's no evidence that points to that.

  • That is how it works, always when some one is new and i join them, i have them turn push to talk on because they dont realize they are talking in game.
