Recently, I purchased Xbox game pass ultimate using the trial month for £1, and enjoyed playing sea of thieves. However, I didn't really feel like paying £10.99 a month if I was just going to be playing one game with it. so, I downloaded it, fully expecting that I will be able to play it after my subscription expires. This was not the case, and I got an error message the day after it expired saying "redeem your Xbox gold" . After some googling, I cant find many others with the same issue and Ideally I would like to keep playing. Any help?

@kingdomk9 No you need to buy it outright to be able to own it and play it anytime. Otherwise need to get game pass again. Game pass is only 'renting' the game and only remains playable with an active game pass account.
As with all Xbox games, you will need an online subscription to play any online portion of a Xbox console game.
Sea of Thieves is an online-always-and-only game meaning if you purchase it you will still need to purchase and maintain an active subscription to play it on Xbox.
If you own and play on PC, you can play anytime/online for free.
Yet another example of Microsoft showing how much they appreciate their console community.
Xbox Game Pass is a subscription service. If your subscription is not active, you can not play any of the games on the service, regardless of if you downloaded them or not.
In order to keep games, you must purchase them from the store.
In addition as others have stated if you are on console, you will also need an active Xbox gold account to use online features.
SoT is an online only game. In order to continue playing it, you must purchase it outright or restart your subscription to Xbox Game Pass.
