uneven/unfair pvp matchmaking

  • Just started exploring the PVP thing with my friends, none of us with any experience in the factions, and we got matchmade repeatedly against the same top ranked opponent. None of us are very good at PVP to begin with, so you know, it made sense that we'd be match made against lower ranked folks too. but across 3-4 different servers against the same top ranked crew? for a crew of newbies? absolute garbage matchmaking.

Like I get we gotta get good and stuff, but like, how the hell are a bunch of pvp newbies supposed to get better at it if we keep getting stomped by one toxic crew that is pure ghost curse top rank, that on top of it trash talks us for being level 2 and a freaking half and not being able to stand a hair of a chance against them? we WANT to level up, but seriously, same opposing crew. 3+ times. what the heck.

It's really unfair and makes pvp not at all beginner friendly. This needs to be adjusted not just boat to boat but rank to rank, keep it in the same 10 ranks or something ballpark. Longer wait times would be fine if it meant that we actually had a chance to learn what we're doing against other low ranks, instead of this being thrown to the lions bullcrap.

  • I understand ur frustration as I too have made the same post but they are definitely working on it so changes and shorter ques should be on the way! Well as far as I know and I have my eye on this ball alot

How do you know he was or they were "Top ranked"

but across 3-4 different servers against the same top ranked crew? for a crew of newbies?

That means there no crew who is open for Pvp in your "Win/Lose" ratio. so it picks the next best thing.

one toxic crew that is pure ghost curse top rank

Much like the PL title, having the curse doesn't mean they are 'top rank'

    trash talks us

How bad was the trash talk? If it was really bad, screen shot it and report them.

It's really unfair and makes pvp not at all beginner friendly.

You do you know can do the Defending right? Dont dive, but allow them to come to you. That way you can setup better.

This needs to be adjusted not just boat to boat but rank to rank

There are no Ranks...if there were, nobody would wanna deal with it.

instead of this being thrown to the lions bullcrap.

How else were you suppose to swim?

Ghost curse means they are going to be seasoned players, seems common sense to me that they will be more skilled than a newer player no?

That means there no crew who is open for Pvp in your "Win/Lose" ratio. so it picks the next best thing.

This shows a participation failure. Few people from the casual playerbase are taking part specifically in there stamp

Much like the PL title, having the curse doesn't mean they are 'top rank'

PL is significantly easier to get than the ghost curse

You do you know can do the Defending right? Dont dive, but allow them to come to you. That way you can setup better.

If they stood no chance on invasion, how likely is they will stand a chance in defence, I'd wager very little.

How else were you suppose to swim?

Through engagements with crews at a similar level or slightly above. You learn nothing from being destroyed and overwhelmed.

Without the newer players entering this mode, it will become empty over time. Matchmaking needs improving, PvP balances need adjusting, cheaters need dealing with.

Congratz, dude! Instead of trying to confront a new player with technical questions, you summarize what's going on well and still provide positive and constructive reinforcement. In fact, the matchmaking is not well balanced, but solutions are being developed to mitigate, even partially, this problem. We need to wait, indeed!

  • Seems like there's missing context here, encountering the same crew on different servers shouldn't really be a thing. So you're actually leaving and starting a new session only to be matched up again? Or you mean after losing and server merged out you're requeuing and coming up against them? If requeuing despite being on a diff 'server' to them, you're still in the same stamp. If there's not many people on at that time in that region in the opposing faction you will repeatedly face same people even if unbalanced because the alternative is not finding a game. Leave and relaunch to refresh to a diff stamp

  • @a10dr4651

Thank you. At least you are sensible.. "How else were you suppose to swim?".. sheesh.

I do think however, that W/L-Ratio alone isn't a good "SBMM". I've paired against people who has had +4000 more hours than I. Someone even had a 77 streak after defeating me and I met the same guy 3 times, waiting barely a minute each time.

The "SBMM" should include more factors than W/L-ratio, otherwise it is not really -skilled based- match making but a match making of chance.

  • @tyowin9418 what else would you suggest? I've had opponents with 3x my playtime that I've beaten, and fresh alt accounts that have owned me.
At this point with the lack of casual playerbase accessing the hourglass refining the matchmaking won't make a massive difference. I feel like they need to work on bringing queue times down then once they're stable they could add more considerations to match ups.

  • @sheepy-ichi
Yeah, in typical SoT fashion, this content was rushed (though a bit more polished than usual, to be fair).

And since they had the good idea to launch it at the end of the year before their holidays, now we've been stuck in this mess for nearly 2 months with no update (to be fair again, they did nerf allegiance gains, must have been a real priority I guess), the whole process beginning to kill this mode already.

So you have a non-existent pvp player-base waiting for the fix to play, and now pretty much only sweats that'd like to just BE ABLE to get the rewards while this mode is still breathing

  • @sheepy-ichi From one new player to another, sadly this feature has failed and is not for us.

@hiradc I guess this is new info to me then, I've been under the impression that "sailing with all players" literally meant that, with server hopping happening both when only one ship remains in a server, or when matchmaking for PVP bringing two together into the same server, not that it was only based on each session you log into. Especially since I've actually relaunched to upgrade my ship when more friends have joined us and still come across a crew we met in the last "session"... and this was before they implemented the fun new "rejoin last session" button.

I don't know tick for tack about the inner mechanisms of the game servers though so it's whatever.

fun how a lot of these game devs, just in general, like to time their stuff like this.... and it's so entirely broken. my partner is playing right now on a sloop with a friend, trying PVP, and as I said in the OP, we are low level 5 or less, and she just said that every ship they've matched up against tonight, even with instant queue load, have been entirely different crews all decked out in the ghost curse... which is still far higher rank/skill by game code standards, right? It makes absolutely no sense why it works this way. It's too sweaty indeed.

It really is a shame that they finally release a ghost curse after all the ghost equipment you can get from this battle pass and the pirates life tall tales, and it's locked behind a broken system. and the skelly curse too. Things people have been wanting for ages.

  • doubt the Devs care, if the game mode dies they just Arena it, "didn't get a PVP curse sucks to be you"

  • @hiradc
How often did you beat said players with 3x your playtime? and those fresh accounts? could easily be someone who had been banned for x-reasons.
Additionally, it won't help the casual players if you bring the queue times down if they continue to get thrashed by hardcore players, you will continue to lose the casual players who wants to/try PvP.

Hopefully opening up the player pool will help the match making.. but I feel like experience and performance in battle might be something to factor into the -skill based- match making.

I am not a game developer, but I've seen youtube clips of rather hardcore players that fought complete newbies that couldn't land their shots at all, be it either cannons or weapons. He stood almost still and they couldn't kill him. Not saying it shouldn't be possible to happen every once in awhile, but it shouldn't be something consistent. Being matched into the same person who thrashed you 3-4 times in a row is not okay.

  • @sheepy-ichi sailing with all players means mix of xbox and pc players. I believe under news there's an article detailing the stamp but say I'm in eu when I launch a session, I won't be matched against all eu players queuing, there will be a group of eu servers designated as my 'stamp'. They are working on allowing cross stamp matchmaking and also mentioned potentially allowing you to queue against your own faction so the balance between guardians and servants won't affect queuetimes.

  • @tyowin9418 a lot of people are private profiles, I have around 90 days played and I beat the only 300 day player I've checked (close fight but they weren't good for age) I've beaten plenty people with more days but likewise lose to plenty with less it's not a direct indicator. There's natural aptitude plays a part, alt accounts also activity some people spend all their time doing pvp or solo slooping so it's their expertise. I've done both pve and pvp so I wouldn't say particularly good or bad for playtime

  • @hiradc
I said in my previous comment that performance and experience was to be considered in the SBMM.

  • @tyowin9418 people are only being matched with people with much higher win ratios when there's not enough people in the pool though. So fixing that will give the current matchmaking a proper chance to be tested. Time will tell, they've just released an update video confirming same faction battles and cross stamp so hopefully those super unfair fights will be few and far between

  • @hiradc I did jsut see that video now too so I'm really hoping this does help solve this issue.

  • @burnbacon You’re really condescending aren’t you?
