New ship type suggestion for solo players

  • So I've been playing Sea Of Theives for awhile and I've always noticed from day 1 that there is a major skill gap that exists between solo players on a sloop and any other crew that has more than 1 player in it. Even the best of players in this game know how extremely difficult and sometimes even impossible solo slooping is in this game. If you get attacked by even a 2 man sloop with decent or competent players that are of an equal skill level as you or even a slightly lower skill level than you they will always win the battle no matter how hard you try simply because you are alone and they have 2 people giving them a MASSIVE advantage over you in a fight. This is why Rare even made it so that if you matchmake in the new hourglass PvP mode as a solo sloop you will only be put into battle with other solo sloops. And this is why this is only a problem when you're playing in the main open world mode trying to chill and vibe and you run into players who don't want to chill or vibe and want to attack and sink you rather than work together and have fun. Even if you're only trying to do tall tales and experience the story mode, these players don't care and will attack and sink you regardless without hesitation. This is why this game seriously needs a new type of ship specifically for solo players. Yes there are LFG's and the community, but not everyone wants to make a post on the LFG's and group up with complete strangers they've never met or played with before. There are many people who have anxiety and are introverted who don't want this and simply want to play solo. And that includes myself, I really enjoy this game and I don't always have friends online to play it with and so I want to play it by myself because I have had only bad experiences trying to make LFG posts and get help from strangers who I've never met or played with before. But trying to play this game solo is as every player who plays this game will say and agree on "playing Solo is playing on hard difficulty" because there is no Solo specific ship type in the game to balance it out. I think Rare should add a new Solo only ship type that is smaller than a sloop, has only an upper deck and lower deck like the brigantine, is extremely fast and nimble (faster than every other ship type in the game either with the wind or against it) and has very little offensive capabilities having only a single small cannon near the front of the ship much like that on the cannon rowboat only this small cannon would be mounted on a swivel and would be able to turn 270° around the ship so you can cover both port and starboard as well as shoot forwards in front of you so you'd still be able to survive and take on all of the PvE encounters like the kraken, megalodon, and skeleton ships. This new ship could be called a Ketch or Gally or something else. There's plenty of small ships that were used by pirates that this ship could be called. All I know is that this game needs some type of ship made for Solo only players so that if you are playing Solo you actually stand a chance against all of the other ships in the game and aren't at a MASSIVE disadvantage like you currently are if you sail a sloop Solo.

  • Solo slooping is just about managing expectations. The sloop can be sailed solo but isn't really combat effective for it. A solo ship will still suffer from the same problems as a solo sloop, lack of crew numbers. Numbers (providing the crew members are compentent) will always provide the main advantage during PvP in SoT among equally skilled crews.

The main thing for solo's is just avoid PvP and high risk activities. It's pretty fun though solo slooping and trying to punch above your weight in PvP.

  • @a10dr4651 precisely, if you're playing Solo your main goal is to AVOID PVP. How are you supposed to avoid PvP if you don't have a ship that's faster than every other ship in the game with multiple players in their crew? The sloop can't escape another sloop with 2 players. This is why the game needs a Solo only ship that's faster than every other ship on the seas.

Absolutely! I find solo slooping frustratingly difficult at times, but boy do I get a great sense of satisfaction from doing so when I achieve certain things in it. I’ve played multi-crew several times, but as much fun as it is playing with my friends, I get more YAY when I progress in single sloop. 👍

  • I wouldn't be against a solo only ship, maybe if it wasn't armed so escape was the only option. Jack Sparrows little sail boat springs to mind XD. The Sloop does need a buff though into headwind. It's nearly impossible to escape well sailed Brig's these days into a headwind.
