Idea on new voyage quests out into the shroud

  • Hello There!

We know the whole sea of thieves is surrounded by the shroud. And we also know lorewise the shroud is kinda dynamic, moving around, like an entity on its own.
So, it could be possible for other islands to be "lost" outside in the shroud area, somewhere, waiting to be explored (like the shores of gold or the ashen reaches once where)

Now, why not go for new voyage quests that lead out into the shroud. Like: Some faction (pirate lord, reapers, or one of the emissaries) wants to explore rumours, or maybe some faction wants to search for a certain island where a special artifact is hidden, or: some faction wants a certain special sea monster slain, a monster that has been seen out there in the shroud, but threatens to attack the sea of thieves and is too dangerous to be ignored, stuff like that.
This could be implemented in different ways: Either with the shroudbreaker item, so those quests only being for Tall Tale completionists, or with the shroud randomly opening up certain "windows", certain paths (since we know the shroud is like an entity, it would make sense for someone to have observed the shroud long enough to predict certain "windows" of open pathways), or it could be an athena mission where the pirate lord himself openes up a path, like he did at the very beginning of the game with helping us reach the SoT.

Those quests would really lead out from the edges of the map, into the shroud area, corridors leading away from the main area. They could be implemented by either being bought from an emissary, or them being time-limited events and open up for anyone on the server. They could be for either one crew, or they could force a bigger alliance to be winnable, like having to battle a massive sea serpent that can only be defeated by a multitude of ships in alliance, or stuff like that.
Once open, they would be reachable for anyone with shroudbreaker item or anyone in general (depends on how they are implemented). This could possibly also result in a competition among players eg.: who reaches the island first, who slays the sea monster first, etc.

I am just playing around with my thoughts here, im sorry if it sounds a little bit confusing, I just felt like i wanna voice those ideas. Cheers

  • That's an interesting idea, if the enforced co-operation is also added then that could be interesting since this player base is pretty damn anti co-operation.
As for giving this quest to an emissary company then i'd say it would be best suited to the Hunters Call or the Bilge Rats. Or it could be a way to try and bring the Sea Dogs back, they're just twiddling their thumbs these days (except that one dude that got done in.. :P).
    Nice idea man. :D

  • Yeah, I think it would be interesting to play around with the boundaries a little bit.
The Shroud is such an interesting concept in itself, and right now its only used as a matter of limitation for the world map. Could be really interesting to play around with that a little bit, make the boundary an active part of the experience u know.
And also agree on the alliance part. It be interesting, in my opinion, to have some incentive to really force people into alliances for a certain amount of time.

  • I just wish they’d do more with the shores of gold area. It’s quite a large chunk of the map that is used for a tall tale people rarely do these days.

I’d love to see a new reason to visit it. Maybe locked behind GH 75 or having already completed the OG tall tale.

it's so beautifully designed with so much potential

I want something out there to hunt

it needs an emergent land threat

  • I would love that. It is a so good idea to explore our world a little bit more.
