Disable rematching same players.

  • Please can we stop being faced off against the same crew multiple times back to back. It’s rarely an even fight and I’ve been on both sides of this where me and my crew have made light work of other crews multiple times in a row but also the same for us. Repeatedly bested back to back by the same crew and it makes for a very negative experience.

Many simple games with matchmaking make it so that you are placed against new players.

  • Many simple games also have a very willing and large dedicated combat-focused playerbase that can stomach the matchmaking system and the tactics/exploits of other players.

This one, not so much. If your pattern of matches are constantly with the same people that you can roll/will roll you, you're probably playing at a very inactive time of day for your region/stamp, and may want to consider logging off and queuing up later during the afternoon/evening of your day for your stamp/region.

  • 4x one ship now . . . .

  • Maybe there nobody else?

Maybe you should be Invaded instead?

  • In theory, with an ELO system, if you're getting dunked on by the same crew repeatedly, your rep-gain for losing should increase with each subsequent loss.

Conversely, if you're dunking on the same crew repeatedly, your rep-gain for winning should decrease with each subsequent victory.

The purpose of saying all that is to point out that, despite it being annoying to fight the same crew back-to-back, at least the rewards should be appropriate in a win or loss.

Now...I only know how an ELO system is supposed to work...but Rare hasn't really provided much details on how their "modified ELO system" actually works, so I guess it's all speculation.

All that said, I hope that the changes coming early next year to improve matchmaking help with this topic.

  • @ashcon2000

    They are working on it.
Caused by several instances of Seas are grouped in "stamps", and only those in the same stamps are matched.

  • @sweetsandman Decreasing the rep gain for beating the same crew would be a bad idea. Because of the way the system works it's not like either side is choosing to rematch the same person. Sadly it leads to a huge negative experience for the losing crew however especially if the tactic the other crew is using is sailing you out of bounds. I got up against the same guy trying to do the sailing out of bounds thing 4x in a row. I think the change they mentioned in the blog post about allowing same faction to match against each other might help cut down on the rematch issue.

It's bad enough they added a penalty for losing out of bounds when its an actual winning strategy for crews to use but to add a penalty to the winning crew because the match making system stinks?

I don't know for sure if that's how this system works as Rare haven't been clear on how their "modified ELO system" actually works...I just know the general idea behind an ELO system.

They 100% need to fix the out-of-bounds loss setup where it doesn't give you rep. I assume they did that in an effort to prevent AFK cheesing... unfortunately, they are only hurting the rest of the community with that decision and aren't preventing the cheese at all.

but to add a penalty to the winning crew because the match making system stinks?

Again, I don't know how Rare has their ELO system designed, I was only describing the general idea behind an ELO system.

Conceptually, it's a very fair system. It's not "penalizing" anyone, it's rewarding appropriately based on your ranking compared to your competitor's.
