Solo gaming isn't an option, because PVE isn't real

  • Hi there,

Just lost my ship to another sloop manned by two. As a solo player, I can't really progress anywhere and if you join an open crew, players just don't pull their weights and/or refuse to use voice chat or any form of communication by large. I have the choice of just keep leaving the game and re-joining it (which takes a minute or two because those lame intros will always pop up) or treat the task as a one-man mission even though there are others involved, or do it solo (in which case I don't need to keep asking people to vote for a journey).

The game is good, but incredibly flawed. I want to farm out enough gold for a few things, but PVP being encouraged (by Reapers offering the best deal EVER and no other faction matching the offer) no solo player will ever succeed, and especially not when you have just started to play the game and there's an overwhelming amount of information to learn.

Reapers need to be nerfed and other factions need to get buffed, or you need a PVE mode.

  • If your goal is gold as a solo a high reward/lower risk way is merchant shipwreck voyages

about the most chill and consistent way to make plenty of gold in the game while keeping risk lower

there isn't a lot of activity on a lot of these servers, I go literally hours without seeing a ship as a solo and most of my fights are in the higher risk category

Throw in a few skelly sloops and some small island looting/captain orders and it's a mighty fine haul for a solo

Plenty of solo sloopers are able to play the game, I've been a mostly solo slooper since launch and I've made progress everywhere.

The game is good, but incredibly flawed.

Just because you don't like a core game mechanic doesn't mean the game is flawed, just means it's not your game.

or you need a PVE mode.

    This will never happen.

  • So, nerf a faction because one ship sank you or completely ruin the game with PvE servers?
    Haha, no.

Solo is extra hard but it is doable.

if you join an open crew, players just don't pull their weights and/or refuse to use voice chat or any form of communication by large.

Like most team based games. Got to use Looking For Group.

The game is good, but incredibly flawed

Is it? Or is it just the player who makes it harder?

I want to farm out enough gold for a few things, but PVP being encouraged

You gain rewards/Gold simply playing....Renown was added. 10,000 gold just sailing around the map not doing anything. By leveling up.
PvP isn't encouraged (unless your doing the S8 thing) It PvPvE

by Reapers offering the best deal EVER and no other faction matching the offer

How so? Because they accept everything? Well if you are a Captain...you can do the same thing at Outposts. :p

no solo player will ever succeed

    Raises hand
D1 and I been succeeding as a Solo.

especially not when you have just started to play the game and there's an overwhelming amount of information to learn.

Just like...Any new game you join and play...it called Learning and Practicing. Your not gonna learn right away. Id understand players expect to gain everything right off the bat. It a learning curve.

Reapers need to be nerfed and other factions need to get buffed,

    Explain what makes Reapers "powerful".

    you need a PVE mode.

    Nope.

  • Solo is indeed an option, it just takes time to get used to. As a solo i have taken on plenty of duos and brigs and still won. Its a matter of practice and how you play. I have played solo more often than not from the day i started, and even tho it was hard at first, after time and practice i learned how to hold my own.

Reapers dont exactly need to be nerfed considering the fact that their weakness is having a target painted on their back at all times, and a pve mode will not be added as rare has stated many times.

  • @goldsmen I find solo play fun and exciting, but this is when I am fully rested and itching for sea of thieves. Those conditions need to be met.

Last time I played was in the late evening after finishing 60hr work week. Got to a server, seemed quiet, just about perfect for a relaxing night.
Put OoS emissary for the ledger rewards, bought 2 quests, sailed off, one was on a big island so instant discard, the other one was allright, killed a skelly sloop, finished the quest and now I'm level 4. Since the server seemed empty thought ok lets try to reach 5 and go to bed...Saw a skelly sloop in a distance, went for it, when I noticed a 2 man sloop almost ganked me and is chasing me...I tried everything to convince them that I don't want to fight.

I boarded them/set them on fire/anchored them/put holes in them/killed both of them. I felt I can take them down, but was not 100 confident also was not looking to do any pvp and me outplaying them few times did not seem to matter..they just continued to sail after me for the little loot I had. ( I did not want to loose either, as last month doing solo reapers was a nightmare). Then while running a Meg attacked me, I managed to shake it off, but they are still sailing after me....

So I noticed its getting very late ,something past 1 AM. Ok ...fine...let's fight if you insist... we started exchanging shots, I was hitting them more than they were hitting me. So I thought to myself, ok I have a chance here, I just need to do everything super quick and accurately (1AM, tired after work, not exactly why I launched the game but whatever).
Then all of a sudden a skelly sloop spawns on my side attacking me....I just ignored it and continued the fight with the duo sloop. Then all of a sudden a Brig joins the party ramming my ship. I thought I'll just alt f4 now and save myself some braincells.

In the end, they have sank the brig and the skelly sloop, I managed to escape the mayhem and sell everything and log off.

So this story would have been one to remember on a normal day. But when just trying to relax after work, I found this way too stressful to enjoy.

Not complaining or anything, just pointing out the solo experience. Can assure you, any new player would have been sunk and had a bad time. And if you have read the story, you should realize that that new player who already has a hang of the game, would have felt that the whole game was rigged against them to loose. Bigger crews chasing them/2x random encounters spawning to attack them, when a bigger player crew is already on them/ an even bigger crew joins the party for a fight...
Sure this might have been some good 'streaming material' if you can pull it off, someone like blurbs would have sank them all by himself probably. Most of us would not.
I also don't understand this RNG, during the last month it felt that it is rigged against the underdog (me) who already has 2/3 players on his back.

Just an idea, if you are attacking a smaller ship/crew your chances of getting 'rared' should increase instead of the weaker ship getting the short end of it.
