How do I opt out of PVP ?

  • If I dont touch the hourglass I am still available for somebody to emerge from water and attack me ?
How do I stay out of this future combat between factions ?

  • @sober999 If you don't activate the hourglass, you're just in regular adventure mode. This doesn't mean you can't be attacked by other ships on the server, but no one can spawn directly on you.

  • @sober999 As always within Sea of Thieves, other Pirates are still a thing and they could decide (as could you) to engage in PvP.

The introduction of the War Map and Hourglass does NOT disable PvP for those that don't use them.

You won't be invaded by those using the War Map/Hourglass but there is always the possibility of random Pirate crews looking for a scrap.

  • @sober999 That's the neate part, you don't! Sea of Thieves has always been a shared world game where any crew can either be hostile or friendly. So always expect the potential to be attacked wether opted into the new system or not.

  • @triheadedmonkey

I am fine with ships already on the server, I can keep my distance, just dont want any "emerging from water surprise attacks"

  • @sober999 Unless you use the Hourglass, that shouldn't happen. It is specifically designed for those that WANT to engage others/be engaged. 🙂

  • @sober999 Yeah then so long as you don't opt into the new faction mechanic you cannot get invaded and stuck inside battle bounds. You can still get rolled up on organically though by other pirates.

  • Want new rewards? Opt in for the war
Don’t want new rewards? Don’t opt in for the war

  • You cant ever opt out of pvp as a whole as its an intended part of the game, but the system is opt in, if you dont opt in then a ship wont spawn on you.

  • Alt+F4!

You'll never have to pvp again!

  • @pithyrumble such a smart [mod edit] you are

Don't raise an emissary flag, don't activate the hourglass, never pick up either type of Reaper chest, don't do the Legend of the Veil voyage (stick to standard or ashen Athena voyages), park on the backsides (side facing the world border or side less traveled) of islands, sell after each island you collect loot from. Raises the grind pretty far but removes almost all chances of losing progress as you grind.

  • i find it interesting they give all these workarounds to avoid MOST pvp, still leave you open to griefers (which are extremely common), and everytime you bring up PVE the refer you to a 2 year old link and then lock your thread. makes it pretty clear that the devs of the game are just as big of griefers as the [mod edit] in game.

It sounds like you might not be into the game, to be honest, based on your responses here and in other threads. Sea of Thieves is a PvP game. You can be engaged by players at any moment. Even the guy above that suggested parking on the back sides of islands, facing away from the center of the map, can be attacked.

I want to clarify that I also enjoy the PvE aspects of the game more than the PvP aspects. I like grinding voyages and doing Tall Tales. However, doing those things wouldn't have any meaning without the constant threat of PvP. If I got a massive loot haul and I knew that it was perfectly safe on my decks, that wouldn't be any fun. PvP makes PvE more interesting. I might need to run from a Reaper bearing down on me, and lead him on a chase for an hour. That's called "emergent gameplay".

If PvP is not your thing, then maybe Sea of Thieves is not your thing. There are plenty of other games that do not have PvP in them.

  • Forgive my noob question, but what is meant by the "hourglass"? How does one activate it?

    Thank you.

    Thank you.

It's at the quest/voyage table on your ship.

Turning it on gives other ships the opportunity to invade you, so be careful.
It also gives you the opportunity to vote for invading other ships when you vote on the map that's next to it.

  • @lem0n-curry Awesome. Thank you.

  • Alliance servers. You'll have to do some digging around google and for Discord servers who're hosting them, but you're on your own for that.
