Devils Roar activity

  • I am sure Rare has seen the roar become more active with volcanoes off. I think if they did an update to the region where the frequency of eruptions changes weekly so some weeks it might only be 30% as active as normal. Since the majority of the players avoid the region due to it never getting re-balanced it has either been too active or not active enough. I think having it rotate through a frequency cycle would allow some players to be like "Oh its not as bad this eek maybe I will play there some" Keeping in mind the number of people who enjoy the roar being as active as it had been is the same amount of people who played arena and you just deleted that mode due to low interest.

While I haven't played much I have enjoyed being in the roar during this event. I do agree that always off isn't as interesting as it was when the activity was just cut in half or what every the change was that happened like 2ish years ago before it got reset to normal claiming you would "re-balance it" which never happened.

  • Cool idea, would be interesting to see how it would change the map. I honestly hate how the whole thing does not have any kind of pattern and instead is just rigged against a player, gets boring quick imo.

I'm not sure they'll actually see an increase in activity besides the obvious doing the Adventure.
I surely didn't see an increase whenever I ventured there or got close.

People might now avoid it because the OoS voyages (and the OoS stages of Ashen Athena) are now not helped by geysers erupting. They also might avoid it if they don't want to be disturbed and expect people waiting for crews doing the Adventure.
It's also no longer a way to escape and try to lure a chasing ship into the range of a volcano.

Changing e.g. the eruptions there might make it more interesting though, as long as they don't make public when it's "quiet" or when it's as hazardous when it first came out. Perhaps make it change by having players do some actions such as to please the fire gods or whatever it is that causes its activity.

    They could also

    • Remove the Ashen loot from most random loot tables not encountered in the Roar (ashen lords and such is fine), so you have to visit the Roar to get those.
    • Decrease the times you have to deliver ashen cargo outside of the Roar.
    • Add Ashen Captaincy voyages
    • Stop forgetting to include the Roar when they add new stuff.

Did an Ashen Athena yesterday - I prefer some (fiery) activity there.

  • @magus104 i dont mind the volcanoes its the fact that ashen athenas arent even worth doing compared to veils and ghost fleet best way to grind rep oos now

I must respectfully disagree. The ghost fleet voyages offer little payouts and requires resources to defeat. Compared to the MA lost shipments and the GH vaults the OoS voyages are trash.

Devils Roar OoS bounties are the best as the geysers do most of the killing of the skeletons. The geysers may interrupt all other voyages but they benefit killing skeletons and ocean crawlers.

  • I love how the Roar is, while it's missing some content like seaforts and shrines, I prefer the activity of minimal players and maximum island threat. Maybe limiting it to 1 eruption per day at most would be nice, but once a week might be a bit much.

  • I would like to see some kind of mechanic to either turn the vulcanos off briefly (doesn't have to be all of them, fe. opening a Vault would stop the island Vulcano for 12 minutes) or to provide a protection against the fire. (For example a long-lasting firework, that creates a shield against the boulders, be it protective coating around ships/players, or static above certain area.)

  • I think reducing the effects of the Roar might help with server stability quite considerably, but I would still want it to be frequent and unpredictable enough to still be very much an environmental hazard that separates the region from elsewhere and keeps it on the backburner of everyone's mind.

  • The region is not very active because there's not much to do there, not because of the volcanoes.

There should be more World Events that take place there. And as others are pointing out, voyages.

I'd also like to see the one skeleton fort in there be active once in a while. The first and only time I had to go there to do something and deal with its volcano was during the current Adventure.

If you pick up the crates, you can end up with a supply surplus by doing those Ghost Fleet voyages. There is also the bonus of the Wraithballs if you happen to do one of those.

  • @d3adst1ck You only get the Wraithballs if you are lucky. You need to get the Burning Blade (already a small chance, even if you maxed out your rep) and even then it's not certain it will drop wraithballs.

It's not luck. If you buy a level 75 OoS voyage, and it is listed at the end of all your other voyages, it will be the Burning Blade. It looks exactly the same as the other 75 OoS voyages, but since it's a different voyage the game will order it differently in your menu and you can use that to figure out which one it is.

  • @d3adst1ck You might not have to do the 'wrong' voyages, but it's still based on luck to get the correct one. ;-)

  • @super87ghost That's why I said they were a bonus in my original post ;)

  • @d3adst1ck True, but it still makes that voyage (even if it is the Burning Blade one) a bit low in rewards. Especially since it is a very noticable voyage with those ghostships are visible from a pretty decent distance.

  • @super87ghost It could probably use a few extra skulls, but it is pretty quick to complete since there is only 3 waves (I think?). The main reason for my comment was to refute the "requires resources to defeat" part, which is offset by the crates that get dropped usually resulting in you ending up with more than you started. The other voyages might give more loot but this one does spit out more supplies, is quicker and generally spawns pretty close to where you drop it.

All of the newest voyages are noticeable from a distance. The vaults are a specific set of islands, and now you often have to sail to a different region to use the key, and then sit there for 3 minutes trying to collect all the loot from the vault before spending more time loading it onto your ship. The Lost Shipments are probably the most profitable, but do require you to sit on top of a shipwreck and floating birds.

    Didn't know that, thanks

  • @d3adst1ck

You realize that the supply crates are Merchant Alliance and not Order of Souls, don’t you?

Yes it only takes 3 cannon balls to kill a ghost ship but how much cannonballs are wasted in the attempt to hit the ship. I always use more cannonballs then I get from those ships.

Also, you don’t get wraith balls from the voyages. Rare gave you a chance to obtain them when they removed the Flameheart world event but it’s a slim chance if it’s possible at all. Even if wraith balls are possible, again it’s sold to merchant alliance.

In short, the ghost ship voyages give almost nothing as far as Order of Souls loot is concerned.

Personally, I don’t need gold. I only fly the emissary flags for the ledger rewards. Using the ghost fleets is the worst possible voyage for emissary value.

  • @magus104

The problem is that the Devils Roar brought ashen loot which was more valuable. Loot was hard to come by when the Devils Roar was first introduced.

With emissary multipliers, the Devils Roar loot isn’t valuable enough to risk going into the Devils Roar. If the Shrouded Ghost only spawned there then people would risk it because of the potential reward that everyone wants. If the Devils Roar is to regain its former glory, there needs to be something good that can only be acquired there. Something that’s worth dealing with the volcanos

  • @magus104 the Roar is so tame now compared to the good old days when the shroud first rolled back and revealed it's explosive glory. #SavetheRoar

Yes, I do realize they aren't OoS loot.. You said it uses resources to do the voyage, so I pointed out that with the crates you end up getting back more than you spend. If you're wasting cannonballs trying to kill the ghost ships, that sounds like a skill problem. They only take 3 hits to take out, so if you're missing a lot you need to practice your range shots or get closer. I can usually grab an initial 10-20 cannonballs and then never have to dip into my barrels again.

Also, you don’t get wraith balls from the voyages. Rare gave you a chance to obtain them when they removed the Flameheart world event but it’s a slim chance if it’s possible at all. Even if wraith balls are possible, again it’s sold to merchant alliance.

You do get a chance for wraithballs when you do the version of the level 75 voyage that has the Burning Blade.

  • They should just turn off volcanic activity on the islands but still allow the earthquakes and geysers from nearby eruptions. Keep the eruptions to only the non-visitable rock formations that are on the outskirts of the islands themselves. This still creates a threat while sailing and can alter your course.

The Molten Sand Fortress should be able to have active Forts and Forts of Fortune with the Ashen variants (including the Ashen Chest of Legends)

Having the Ashen Winds world event reside in the Devils Roar as an option just makes too much sense as well.
