Pirate Appearance Changer Idea

  • When changing my pirate, its difficult to pick the right face and body just by generating tons of models, could it be possible to have a Mirror section in the game menu that can allow us to change our character, or make a completely new pirate? Like eye shape, eye color, gender, height and nose for example? And perhaps make a name like with our pets and ship.

  • Another. “I want the perfect pirate” suggestion. Sigh

  • Yeah, it would be great if they added some proper customization options.

I will never stop upvoting these suggestions, no matter how many times BurnBacon tries to gatekeep it.

  • Insert schpeel about IPG working as intended.

Insert brag about my pretty pirate in about 15 minutes.

They should make a face potion and charge $7.99 (usd) for it. I bet you'd be willing to pay more.

Keep the $1.50 IPG potion the same tho.

  • I was long in vocal support of the random system. I think the random system does offer positive effects.

As qol and immersion have increased in small ways I find myself leaning more towards supporting a feature that gives people the opportunity to customize their physical appearance.

When it comes to identity and immersion there has always been a strong case for it even if I supported a random system.

Over time I think it has become more clear to me that I more align with the opportunity for immersion/qol than with the (what I believe to be) positive effects of a random character system.

  • @wolfmanbush But the QoL would go out of the window once you would see a reaper galleon where everyone looks like Jack Sparrow, Boris Johnson or Putin or whoever. This would be abused a lot 100%.

Without changing the original intent, but at the same time catering the players who want this, I would propose to have a face scanning app like in NBA 2k games where you can create your own player (Also great opportunity to have other SoT related things there) But this is extra money spent for Devs, so I doubt it is realistic to expect it.
Such system still could be abused most likely, but a lot of people could also have 'themselves' sailing the seas.

It's not abuse of a system it's preference that may be shared/common/popular but it's not abuse.

I think there are benefits when it comes to random, especially for younger people.

With people being able to re-roll for relatively low amounts of money and with more and more costumes coming out I think the social benefits of random pirates have largely been reduced down to minimal positive effects.

The opportunity for qol/immersion/rp improvement through full customization has now become much more significant in my view as we sit here today in the current environment.

  • @wolfmanbush Well I believe both sides have arguments the good and the bad and I understand your point of view. I think it could be really fun with good, mature people in the server.

But would you really want players using voice comms approaching your ship with ''John Cenas entrance music and then you see him on deck '' or similar... would be fun the first time, but kids would copy cat and you would have a lot of same jokes going around.
Also a lot of players would copy paste the look of NPCs, I believe currently your not allowed to use their names(or am I wrong here?), so I would dare to assume the rest of identity is off limits, which would be the main reason Rare would not do it, disregarding extra work this would create.
I currently find the game to be immersive in this aspect and having a random pirate means I never really seen two pirates that look exactly alike.

A significant amount of pirates currently look very similar

When it comes to taking focus off of traditional looks during escapism I think there are benefits for young people that are developing their perceptions of things but as more wear costumes and more re-roll regularly it has become less of a reality and thus less of a benefit. Like everything else, many have opted out of the system in a few different ways so it makes it less impactful

Youthful expression eventually leads to creativity, originality, and individuality. So, whatever they pick, whoever their heroes are, whatever their current preferences may be, that is theirs. That is a part of the process they will go through to find out who they are.

When it comes identity I think a custom system allows people to be themselves and express themselves in escapism where people have found themselves a place to fit in.

How people identify, how they express themselves, their preferences, their immersion I think is theirs just as ours is ours. I think what matters is the freedom, the opportunity, for people to find as much quality of life as the devs can reasonably offer.

  • If the RPG had a few filters most would be happier. Male/female, fat/skinny, young/old etc. Could even be as simple/limited as having a filter based off what ever you saved. Save an skinny old female pirate and a skinny old male pirate, all the other new ones you get are just skinny old pirates.

  • sorry, cant happen because big brain people who dwell on the forums say no in every thread about pirate appearances XD

  • The reason for the system we have now is for a few reasons, including the fact that everyone would basically make jack sparrow if they could.

But Rare already gave them the ability to do that by adding a Jack Sparrow costume so I don't think that particular reason is relevant anymore.

That reason isnt, but there are still plenty of copyrighted characters out there, and another of their big reasons, they dont want every pirate to look as nice as possible, the reason for the system they have now is because they thought if you could customize your pirate, they wouldnt be "ugly enough".

  • Pirate Barbie? Yeah, no thanks.

    Pirate Barbie? Yeah, no thanks.

maybe they wanna be a pirate Reba McEntire or a pirate Dolly or a pirate Cher or a pirate Tracy Chapman

    I wouldn't blame 'em

  • i'd settle for being able to have a 2nd character on console without having to grind all my stuff again ( have one skinny /one big pirate) or one ( male and one female pirate) not to mention you like how your main pirate looks but want to try the character wheel again use it on the secoundary to save the main from being deleted forever

  • @wolfmanbush or oirate cyndi lauper loved the goonies music video

  • @galactic-geek said in Pirate Appearance Changer Idea:

I dont know if you noticed but 90% of womens faces in this game already look like barbies. If anything a proper character creator would let people make more rugged looks on women.

Likewise, 90% of male characters look like homeless people right now and a creator could actually give us some variety.

    🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

Yeah, that's simply not true. Also, Barbie's not just a face; she's always been an entire package. 😉

And people who want "barbies" will choose a skinny character which isnt hard to find. People want to customize the details which have nothing to do with this "barbie" buzzword.

Just stop gatekeeping please. If you want a randomly generated character or keep your current one, literally nobody is trying to stop you.

Whether 30+ years ago or recently listening to/watching Cyndi Lauper perform true colors it is a beautiful investment of time, after time

Same sentiment for the late and beyond great Dolores O'Riordan and the ever so talented Jewel and many of their songs. Alanis as well.

  • At this point, I can only see one thing wrong with adding customization to the IPG...

You've got millions of pirates already generated and players with probably a combined billions of play-hours on their pirates.

The Appearance Change potion is an Emporium item.

So...If they add customization to the IPG, you'd have potentially millions of upset players that didn't have that option and are now being charged IRL money to now utilize that feature.

SO...if they DO add any sort of customization to the IPG, I'd like to see it only made available when using the pirate appearance potion. That way, everyone is in the same boat and it's effectively a paid feature for everyone.

  • @burnbacon
God forbid people have a pirate they actually like and want to spend money on to dress up.

  • @miserenz
This would be a nice addition. If I favorite 3 pirates the other 5 that generate should be created a little less randomly and more catered to what was favorited.

  • @goldsmen
I feel like Rare took this as a suggestion for a Jack Sparrow costume, because now we have one. And yes for a limited time everyone bought it and wore it, but now we are no longer over run with Jack Sparrow and are back to please change the IPG.

  • @alienmagi
"Just stop gatekeeping please. If you want a randomly generated character or keep your current one, literally nobody is trying to stop you."

Felt this needed to be said again. If you like the current IPG and your current pirate good for you, your life is perfect. The rest of us would like to have more say in how our character looks.

  • @burnbacon said in Pirate Appearance Changer Idea:

Another. “I want the perfect pirate” suggestion. Sigh

It's totally a waste of time and money because I already rolled the perfect pirate.

All that would happen is everyone would copy me :)

  • @wynterwithin "Just stop gatekeeping please"

It's called a discussion, if you don't like it when people don't agree with you then tough luck.

    And stop bumping old threads.

  • @foambreaker
SoT support told me to go to the forums and so I did. I do not know if they wanted me to create ANOTHER post on pirate appearance or go support a thread already created. Perhaps you could get more from information from them since submitting a feedback/accessibility suggestion was met with "use the forums" and using the forums was met with "submit a ticket"

  • @wynterwithin necro much? dont ressurect old threads or the server eats you

  • As we do not permit thread necro as per our forum rules, we will go ahead and drop anchor on this thread here. Thank you.
