Supply storage rebalance suggestion

  • So, we currently have an influx of supplies in the game. I've seen multiple threads lately regarding hopping and lack of organic gameplay with the risk and reward that is supposed to be part of the game. I think part of this is down to the influx of supplies at the dock and supplies carried through portals resulting in spam tactics or lack of tactics. I've got a few suggestions which I think could help bring more focus back to risk and reward.

    • Have a max capacity on storage barrels similar to the storage crate. This encourages supply management, gives a max capacity to portal hopping ships, allows focus on what supply types you want according to your playstyle i.e chains/throwables/curses or cannonballs. This of course balanced across each ship type with 2, 3 and 4 barrels respectively.

    • Reduce stack sizes in barrels, 99 way too high. Reducing the stack as I stated above encourages a choice and resupplying on the server.

    • Increasing your total supply means you take a higher risk/reward option by using storage crates. If you are boarded, these can be thrown off your ship (risk/reward)

I think the above will help bring back some more focus into organic gameplay to acquire supplies and increase the effectiveness of naval strategy, allowing you to bleed an opponent of supplies forcing crews to think about their effectiveness in battle rather than spamming shots and hoping for the best. This should give balanced gameplay across the different styles of organic players and hoppers. Neither style's are wrong, they should just be balanced

  • There is a max of 9,600 cannonballs & food and 4,800 planks on a sloop; whilst on the brig and galleon it is 14,400 cannon balls, 9,600 Food and 4,800 planks.

The max total resources a storage crate can be stocked up with is 1,584 with its 16 slots.

Most long sessions I average around 800 of each on a sloop when solo since I barely use them (since I passively stock up via sea forts and outpost stops; I don't even bother with floatsom anymore since it sinks too fast by the time you get to it) as I am working on commendations and I am trying to get better at long range naval combat shots. Back at launch there was a limit of 300 items per barrel on all ships and you would be getting them out one at a time for cannonballs instead of a stack at a time.

    You can't sell storage crates.

Wood, Cannonball, Fruit are 50 max and sellable when full.

  • As long as it is not exploitable, I honestly don't mind the current balance. However, hopping server, should be the same as logging off and starting a new game, I really don't understand the reasoning for liking current portal hopping without any boost for others. Or if everyone starts portal hopping it will be ridiculous.

I really like the idea where someone here proposed to create incentives to keep the Level 5 flag instead of raising/lowering rinse repeat. Everyone would be happy.

  • @a10dr4651 If the overabundance of supplies is the root problem, then that is what needs to be addressed.

Adding a supply limit would serve as somewhat of a bandaid, but as you pointed out, it could be avoided by the use of storage crates. And while you would run some risk of having crates stolen or thrown overboard, hiding them would mitigate that risk. Granted, in sloops and brigs, there are only so many places one could hide them. But this would also mean that gallies get an unintended buff.

I think the better solution is one that we've seen suggested many times, in many forms. Nip the problem in the bud. Remove specials (chains, bombs, curses) and high tier food from the environment, and tie them to server activity. The harder the activity, the better the supplies. Higher risk, higher reward.

If there was ever a time to make any such changes, it'd be now. Before Season 8.

  • @theblackbellamy I'd happily take that as a solution
