So, we currently have an influx of supplies in the game. I've seen multiple threads lately regarding hopping and lack of organic gameplay with the risk and reward that is supposed to be part of the game. I think part of this is down to the influx of supplies at the dock and supplies carried through portals resulting in spam tactics or lack of tactics. I've got a few suggestions which I think could help bring more focus back to risk and reward.
-
Have a max capacity on storage barrels similar to the storage crate. This encourages supply management, gives a max capacity to portal hopping ships, allows focus on what supply types you want according to your playstyle i.e chains/throwables/curses or cannonballs. This of course balanced across each ship type with 2, 3 and 4 barrels respectively.
-
Reduce stack sizes in barrels, 99 way too high. Reducing the stack as I stated above encourages a choice and resupplying on the server.
-
Increasing your total supply means you take a higher risk/reward option by using storage crates. If you are boarded, these can be thrown off your ship (risk/reward)
I think the above will help bring back some more focus into organic gameplay to acquire supplies and increase the effectiveness of naval strategy, allowing you to bleed an opponent of supplies forcing crews to think about their effectiveness in battle rather than spamming shots and hoping for the best. This should give balanced gameplay across the different styles of organic players and hoppers. Neither style's are wrong, they should just be balanced
