Open party sloop griefers

  • ı just had an open party sloop game when a guy joined burned my ship tried killing me with blunder bombs and then went afk on the helm. I couldn't do anything because lack of votes. at least captains should have the ability to kick teammates or lock them to brig on sloops

    Blunder them off the helm

  • You made the mistake of playing Open Crew instead of Closed Crew.

  • it comes down to risk/reward

minimize the risk, always have a backup plan, be strategic when bringing in potential chaos into the situation

    an example

I'm a solo, if I have a bunch of loot and I am at reapers and want some help while helping someone else I might open the crew AFTER I have parked. minimal risk here, they are likely going to want the cheese even if they are mischievous

If you are in some random combat scenario and you have nothing to lose or are already likely to lose you can roll those dice for some help by opening the crew

Never bring someone on until you are prepared.

Open crew is fine, wanting to play with others is fine, just prepare for the the times it becomes an issue, always minimize risk, then it's no big deal

  • then went afk on the helm

    Blunderbombs

I couldn't do anything because lack of votes.

Toss your loot and sink ship, leave ship. Close Crew. Solved.

at least captains should have the ability to kick teammates or lock them to brig on sloops

Allow me to introduce to you the Con of that power.
You decide to join a crew. Spend couple hours doing voyages and collecting loot. (Maybe even the Shrouded Ghost appears.) Before turning in the loot....The Captain kicks you out so there friend can join. Receiving all the loot you worked together to hoard, only to not get the rewards.

Reason I bring that up, You never think of the other side of the "fix" you want. Put yourself in both shoes before requesting.

    • Brig someone wont do much. You pretty much would have someone who go Afk and wait for to leave first.
    • Kicking would work only for you. But once it happens to you, then its a crime. Abuse of power from a Captain

Captain earn respect or face mutiny
    Before

  • @kogan-grozz yeah that sucks. Don't do open crew this is common. Use discord if you want teammates.

  • What if the captain could toggle whether or not crewmates could take the helm (much like you can toggle whether to let them mess with cosmetics)? Crewmates don’t like it, they leave and you’re solo again. Doesn’t help with anything else, and if you can blunder them off it’s more of a formality, but does have a nice risk/reward (what if you hoard the helm and then you’re off-ship when someone needs to correct course).

  • @burnbacon

    • Blunderbombs / this happened when ı went on the island to do the quest ı had, he burned my ship and wasted all my blunderbombs while ı deal with the fire so ı didn't have any

    • Toss your loot and sink ship, leave ship. Close Crew. Solved. / This means ı lose all my loot ı worked for and i can't scuttle the ship or close the crew without his vote. this doesnt solve anything

even if they don't bring a kick they should add something for sloop griefers where votes are same

  • This is why I stay away from open crew sloop.

If I need to flip crew to open but worry about griefing I take these steps:

    1. Toss all the firebombs into the sea.
    2. Take blunderbombs (toss the rest OR risk it and leave them in the barrel and see step 10)
    3. Dispose of all storage crates OR just extra storage crates (loot can be gathed quickly by the pirate and thrown overboard)
    4. Take the best food. (all open crew sloop pirates join, take supplies and disconnect)
    5. Take all the curses. (all open crew sloop pirates join, take supplies and disconnect)
    6. Check the horizon.
    7. Welcome the pirate once they join (you only have a few seconds to make a good impression and promise a good time)
    8. Make sure you have 20 to 40 minutes to explain basic concepts. (Where we are going, what we are getting, what is it worth, what is the risk, why griefing is worth less than the reward)
    9. If all this fails stop the sloop and let them tire themselves out once they notice they can't do much since you prepared for this.
    10. If you kept a few blunderbombs in the barrels just accept a death or two to record and report the griefing.
    11. Ditch it destroy your rowboat if nessisary. (If a griefer has lost they may go nuclear and attempt to take one or all of your treasures a rowboat is the most effective may for them to inconvenience you)
  • There is a an old saying:

''Don't blame a clown for acting like a clown, ask yourself why you keep going to the circus''

After warnings from person who got me into this game, few posts like this, I have not even tried solo crew once, just would not have the patience for it. If I want my ship burned, I'll do it myself.

  • Report them move on. I am completely ok with trolling and messing with other crews (including alliance ships) but not your own that is griefing. Join the SoT discord and find people that way its much better, or start making dedicated play groups with people you meet. Highly recommend joining private discord servers and meeting people that way typically you find significantly better players through those than SoT official.

It's part of the game. There should be solutions to common problems.

Its sad, but its totally true, open crew could be decent, but from what little time i have done of it, and how much i have seen of it, open crew is functionally unplayable, especially on larger ships.

  • i dont think you should be allowed to kick teammate because of obvious exploits but you should be able as a captain to take the wheel off someone’s hands at any time.

The solution is to play closed crew. If you really want a crewmate with you, find one to play with on the Discord server or in the LFG forums.
